Economics of Marriage Change in a South Indian Village

The Indian marriage system has undergone major changes in the last few decades. Studies have found an expansion and intensification of dowry and increase in age at marriage. Using information from a village in Tamil Nadu, south India, this article shows that recent marriage changes in the study village (increased number of love-marriages and stagnation or slight decline in marriage age) are caused by the economic independence and personal autonomy among the younger generation which are products of major changes in the socio-economic organization of the society.

一、前言在缔结一个婚姻时,相互交换礼物(不管何种形式)是世界上许多民族和社会中一个比较普遍的实践。在人类学那里,男方向女方的赠与包括聘礼(bride wealth)、聘金(bride price1)、“新娘服务”(bride service2),指的是新郎或其亲属送给新娘本人或其亲属的礼品,包括钱财、物品,也包括以劳动形式提供的各种服务。女子出嫁时亲属赠送的各种物品或货币称为嫁妆(dowry),有时候也包括新娘或其亲属提供给新郎亲属的“新郎服务”(bridegroom service)。关于为什么联姻的两个集团之间要互相赠送礼物的问题,学界的解释可以说是众说纷纭。

各地的农村中,作为乡邻的家庭之间结成怎样的合作关系,有哪些与此相关的象征性行为与价值观念,大体上属于基层社会自治方面的习俗,均可反映出家族、乡里组织和亲属级别等制度实际存在的状况。在调查一些地方的民间自治组织时,可能会遇到村落共同体或家族的制度都显得松散而不完整的情况,但是这并不等于说这些地方就一定缺乏乡邻合作与民间自治的传统;

Poromoi Tamu and the Case of the Drowning Village: History, Lost Places and the Stories We Tell

Archaeological excavations at an ancestral village site within rainforest in Papua New Guinea has revealed buried cultural evidence that can be explained in a number of ways. While interpretations based on Western archaeological methods suggest regional landscape dynamics informed by geomorphological processes, Indigenous Rumu oral traditions suggest an interpretation of the site’s stratigraphy based on the workings of spiritual forces. The role of story-telling and new information in site interpretation and understanding is explored in light of these different yet complementary accounts.

20世纪80年代的婚姻法律与婚姻家庭变迁

颁布于中国全面改革开放起步时期的1980年《婚姻法》,反映了国家在婚姻家庭领域的法制重建以及社会转型带来的家庭婚姻制度的变化。在社会上引起较大反响的主要有三个方面:第一,明确了夫妻财产制,人们的个人财产权利意识增强;第二,实行计划生育政策,但由于重男轻女思想的影响,使性别选择问题更突出地表现出来;第三,明确把感情破裂作为离婚的条件,但“感情破裂”的衡量标准很难掌握,司法部门在处理离婚案件时仍有很大困难。总之,1980年《婚姻法》是一部承前启后的法律,它既是对1950年《婚姻法》的继承与发展,又通过20年的司法实践,为2001年《婚姻法》的修正案的制定作了法律上的铺垫。

Telling Stories to Hear Autoethnography: Researching women's lives in northern Pakistan

Stories about sewing machines are not usually the stuff of geographies, although stories and narratives offer potential as a geographic method. In this article, I examine the ways that story telling is a reflexive representational strategy, becoming a text for analysis that can be complemented by field research methods. I examine a story about sewing machines to suggest how it can be an analytical tool for postcolonial research, conveying what may be called the ‘real’ effects of colonialism, imperialism, and globalization in the lives of the women I researched in northern Pakistan. This method of representation makes more transparent the extent of women's participation in constructing ‘my’ narrative and research.
