This paper calls attention to the difficulties of broaching issues of 'race' and 'sex' in the classroom in the context of nation-wide institutional calls for multiculturalism. I argue that critical multicultural objectives can only be successful if: (1) faculty who take curricular and pedagogical risks are able to count on strong support from colleagues, departmental chairs and university administrators; (2) classroom realities of homophobia, sexism and racism are acknowledged at an institutional structural level to be societal in reach and global in scale; (3) we engage in evaluative strategies that are educative about the learning process; and (4) we stress to students the emotional realities and practical skills involved in learning about, and working through, social conflict and difference.     

Much More than Gender

Numerous publications on gender archaeology present case studies that incorporate gender in their analyses, but make little use of feminist theory and critique, and are ambivalent or negative to feminism. Aspects of Norwegian, British and American gender archaeology are discussed in relation to a desire for the ‘mainstream.’ The reasons for, and consequences of, a lack of feminist theorizing and engagement are related to Donna Haraway’s concept of situated knowledges.

Expanding Opportunities: Cluster Strategies That Reach More People and More Places 1

This article addresses the impacts of cluster-based economic development strategies on (a) low- and middle-income people, (b) economically distressed urban and rural places, and (c) small enterprises. It draws on the collective experiences and ideas of a small group of experts and practitioners from various parts of the US and Europe to pinpoint some of the reasons why certain people, places, and firms are left out or fall behind in regional efforts to develop economies based on clusters, identify the barriers to more widely dispersed benefits, and suggest some opportunities for surmounting those barriers. It goes on to recommend new approaches and initiatives that extend opportunities to marginalized populations, less favoured regions, and very small firms and thereby produce more just clusters.

Do Lawyers Get More Votes?

ABSTRACT

In many western democracies, law has been the dominant occupational background of politicians. This raises the question whether lawyers get more votes when they run for election compared to non-lawyers. To our knowledge, this question has not been examined empirically over an extended period of time. Our study aims to fill this lacuna. We collected longitudinal data about the careers of all candidates in Canadian federal elections from 1921 to 2015. Our dataset is composed of about 32,000 observations including the occupation and electoral performance of every candidate who ran for office. Our analysis shows that lawyers do get more votes but that their personal electoral boost is very small.
