Plato's Socrates: One Among Many,but Preeminent

Abstract

Catherine H. Zuckert has written a monumental work on Plato's corpus that offers a new framework for understanding his dialogues. Not only does she trace Plato's presentation of Socrates' development over time, but she also shows how Plato uses other philosophic interlocutors to contribute to his philosophic project. Central themes include Socrates' discovery of erôs, the unity of virtue, and the place of teaching in philosophy, and the relation between intelligible ideas and sensible experience.

Many voices: Medical anthropologists explore the meaning of health,illness, and cure

Franz Boas organized and shaped American anthropology. No academic discipline of similar scope owed so much to just one person. Within three decades of coming to the United States from Germany he had trained the anthropologists who established its place within the universities and redirected its tone and ethos as well as its theories. The biographies under review help us understand the background, aims, and drive of the man. We shall consider, in particular, the impact he had on the political and ethical tone of the field, the prevalence of women in it, and the importance of his scientific background.     

One Landscape, Many Tenants: Uncovering Multiple Claims, Visions and Meanings on the Theban Necropolis

The archaeology of the Theban Necropolis is well documented. Under represented in the literature are the studies which deal with the meaning of the site to the multitude of contemporary users who interact with the heritage landscape and with each other in the designated archaeological zone. This article will investigate how different stakeholders engage with the heritage ‘space’ and invest it with multiple meanings. By exploring the areas of agreement, difference and contradiction, we hope to show how contemporary experiences and future visions for the management of global heritage at the Theban Necropolis can be analogous and simultaneously worlds apart.     

One Landscape, Many Experiences: Differing Perspectives of the Temple Districts of Vijayanagara

Landscapes have multiple meanings depending on the perspectives of those who experience them. Uncovering those perspectives for past landscapes depends on multiple lines of evidence, both archaeological and historical. The landscape of the fourteenth- to sixteenth-century south Indian capital of Vijayanagara was the setting for important mythological events, interplays of power between the elite, ritual and pilgrimage for devotees, and ordinary daily activities for residents. This paper explores these different views of the urban landscape through examination of oral traditions and historical data, assessment of architecture and access and routing, and archaeological analysis of grinding stones and ceramics.     

The Many Deaths of Cyrus the Great

This article uses narratives of the death of Cyrus the Great as a test case in order to examine the use of propaganda in the Achaemenid empire. By comparing the accounts found in Herodotus, Ctesias, and Xenophon, it is shown that these Greek historians have captured propagandistic messages created in the courts of contemporary Achaemenid kings. While the Greek works were very much the product of their authors’ literary imagination, nevertheless they preserved substantial evidence about the role of propaganda during the Achaemenid period.     

The Many Sexes of Risk: Gender,Disease, and Identity in the Asia-Pacific Region and Elsewhere

That potential pathogens transit to and through body parts and fluids of densely connected individuals belonging to highly mobile ethnic groups shows how relevant to health is the study of sexual networking. Five recent books show sexual networking has quickened owing to labor migration, poverty, religious double standards, militarism, tourism, and nation building. Gender conventions and sexual practice in Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea have hardened in some contexts and destabilized in others. HIV, HPV, AIDS, and cervical cancer are expressed in gendered and sexed bodies, behaviors, technologies, and ideas that are often situated in violent interpersonal and structural contexts.     

Many Voices,One Court: The Origin and Role of Dissent in the Supreme Court

E pluribus unum—out of many, one—is the phrase emblazoned on the Seal of the United States, which refers to the notion that a single American voice emerges from the many diverse groups that constitute the nation. The legislative and executive branches of government often act as one voice through legislative bills and executive acts, aggregating diverse interests that reflect the national will. The notion of e pluribus unum, however, is not often applied to the judiciary, a branch of government the members of which are viewed, not as outlets for the will of the people, but as gatekeepers of the rule of law. But while the Supreme Court may not speak directly for the people, its opinions speak to the people, and the methods used by the Justices to express those opinions have revealed changes in the conception of the Court's voice throughout history.
