"I have seen the future": selling the unsustainable city

Seventy years ago, General Motors’ Highways and Horizons exhibit at the World’s Fair, designed by Norman Bel Geddes and Eero Saarinen, promoted demand for cars and federal highways without any concern for environmental sustainability, the theme of our 2010 conference. The main exhibit included a sequence of four parts (entrance ramps, map lobby, Futurama ride, and “intersection of 1960”) where the viewer’s perception of spatial scale was manipulated. Setha M. Low’s theory of “embodied space” helps decode why movement through these diverse spaces influenced millions of Americans’ views of transportation and urban form, a promotional success yet to be equaled by advocates of environmental sustainability.

世纪之交,我怀着一种新鲜而获知的心理曾去过一趟那听了无数遍有着美丽传说的诱惑之地——民和三川。民和回族土族自治县的官亭镇、中川乡和峡口等地区人称五大堡三川,它不仅有着悠久的历史而且是有名的瓜果之乡,清代诗人吴栻就有“曾将烂漫照三川,活色生香谁与怜?”的诗句。由于我姥爷的上辈是从这片土地走出来的,因此在我幼年的记忆里,舅舅们对这片土地的向往便成了我对这片土地从未有过的一种亲近。于是,在秋色丰收的季节里,我第一次踏上了无数次在梦中出现过的地方。那可正是大地泛黄,土族人民一片欢腾之景:纳顿的热闹与村民的热情使得…

"Yea, I have a goodly heritage": health versus heredity in the Fitter Family contests, 1920-1928

By the 1920s, the future of the middle-class family had become a topic of great concern for mainstream Americans. This widespread concern led to a new acceptance of the discussion of sexual and marital issues in print and in public. Within this public discussion, eugenicists, physicians, clerics, sociologists, and various others offered solutions to the questions and concerns of their rapidly changing society. The Fitter Family contests, sponsored by eugenicists and held at state fairs in the 1920s, reflected these public and professional anxieties. Though infused with eugenic ideas about race betterment through better breeding, the contests were equally concerned with improving the health of individuals and strengthening American families.     

Studying Immigrant Policy One Law at a Time

This article shows that, in the study of immigrant integration policy in the U.S. states, it is critical to report data and coding decisions for individual laws. This analysis uses an updated and public database of law‐level decisions, which includes 2,703 legislative actions recorded by the National Conference of State Legislatures from 2005 to 2016. These data are used to estimate models of aggregate state policy activity in a variety of ways: as a single continuum of policy balance versus separate models of welcoming and hostile, lumping all policy subareas together versus analyzing a specific subarea, and lumping all years together in one cross section versus panel analysis. The results in these models differ enough to indicate that reporting codes for individual‐level laws is absolutely essential so that each researcher easily can construct the measure that fits his or her theoretical framework best.     

在"一个国家"和"多元文化主义"的激荡中成长--从公民社会模式看澳大利亚华人的参政空间

九十年代后期澳大利亚华人参政形式发生了结构性转变,由原来的相对散漫而少有华人参政,转变成为华人主动集会结社投身政治.本文认为,这种转变是在特定的历史时空,由华人社群与澳洲主流社会的变化互相激荡而产生的.本文利用公民社会理论来建构一个看待移民社会政治参与的参考架构,用海外华人的视角来审视澳洲华人发展史,讨论九十年代后期澳洲极端派反移民势力的兴起,以及对华人社会的影响.笔者认为,澳洲华人社会这个转变提供了一个华人参政的良好典范,即以少数族裔身份在公民社会中参与政治活动,从而改变主流社会的思维.     

"时间"概念在佛教大众化歌曲所表现的意义

一、前言 佛教大众化歌曲的运用,主要在于布教、仪式、引领日常行仪的活动,这些活动虽然是佛教展现在大众面前的"表象",却也是作为传播教理,进而深植人心,甚至融入社群生活的重要媒介.而透过佛教歌曲的歌辞内容与实际演唱的声情表现,可顺引行仪进行,引导大众进入宗教感应的氛围,进而得让教理转应于俗情,引导大众反思生活境遇,接纳对应于人生的教理.     

不要在“假设”上浪费时间

《近代史研究》2005年第3期和2006年第1期上,先后刊登了房德邻先生的《评“假如”史学》和王也扬先生的《客观历史的可能性与研究者》,讨论历史研究中的假设问题。从理论上说,在科学研究过程中,运用假设来探索未知的领域,是一个基本的研究方法。在史学研究中,运用假设作为一种参考系统,来思考和理解历史运动的轨迹和规律,当然也是无可厚非的。问题的症结在于,历史学家不是未来学家,历史运动的结果是已知的,并且是不可逆的。如果假设是为了探索造成历史运动结果的复杂原因,那么,假设就是有价值的;如果假设是出于对既存的历史道路的愤恨和忏悔…     

"鲁迅风波":当代中国思想史的一个侧面

鲁迅的著作已成为经典,不论在文学史上,还是在思想史上,都是公认的事实.而且这在鲁迅生前业已发生,是在各种思想争论中历史地形成的.自改革开放和思想解放运动以来的20余年间,鲁迅及其思想又遭遇挑战,这已不是经典形成的话题,而是挑战经典本身,由此而引发的纷纭评说,人称"鲁迅风波"."鲁迅风波"虽经几起几落,但其背后隐藏的,不啻是鲁迅经典文本的现代阐释,尽管阐释有严肃的,也有调侃的,但都是借阐释鲁迅以表达某种当代思想诉求.因此,关于鲁迅的不同层面、不同取向的论争,凸显的无疑是当代中国思想史的一个侧面.     

张家港市港口镇"做会讲经"调查报告

江苏省张家港市系县级市,隶属苏州市。北部和东部临长江,隔江与靖江市、如皋县、南通市相邻;西部和南部与江阴市、常熟市交界。它是一个新兴的城市,1962年分割常熟县(即今常熟市)及长江中涌出的沙洲(今市之东部)并江阴县部分地区建沙洲县,八十年代后期改称张家港市。
