This essay takes up the call for a “third phase” in memory studies and makes theoretical and methodological suggestions for its further development. Starting from an understanding of memory that centers on memory's temporality, its relation to language, and its quality as a social action, the essay puts forward the concept of “entangled memory.” On a theoretical level, it brings to the fore the entangledness of acts of remembering. In a synchronic perspective, memory's entangledness is presented as twofold. Every act of remembering inscribes an individual in multiple social frames. This polyphony entails the simultaneous existence of concurrent interpretations of the past. In a diachronic perspective, memory is entangled in the dynamic relation between single acts of remembering and changing mnemonic patterns. Memory scholars therefore uncover boundless cross‐referential configurations. Wishing to enhance the dialogue between the theoretical and the empirical parts of memory studies, we propose four devices that serve as a heuristic in the study of memory's entanglement: chronology against time, conflict, generations, and self‐reflexivity. Current debates on European memory permit us to explore the possible benefits that the concept of entangled memory carries for memory studies.  相似文献

Previous comparisons of the radiocarbon dates of tree-ring-dated bristlecone pine samples and historicallydated samples from Egyptian archaeological sites have led to conflicting conclusions regarding the validity of the bristlecone pine calibration of radiocarbon dates. However, the new statistical analysis presented in this paper shows that the bristlecone pine calibration of the radiocarbon time-scale is not incompatible with the given Egyptian historical chronology in the period 3000–300 B.C. (calendar years). This analysis is the first to allow for possible additional variability in the radiocarbon dates of short-lived samples (due to short-term fluctuations in the atmospheric carbon-14 level), and to examine the effect on the analysis of any changes in the precision ascribed to the historical dates of the samples. Furthermore, the paper examines the reasons for the conflicting conclusions obtained in previous analyses, and uses the differences in the paired radiocarbon dates on the Egyptian samples to investigate the overall repeatability of these radiocarbon measurements.  相似文献

The expression of place and cultural identity through tourism practices is the focus of this paper. Extending recent work which has maintained that contemporary tourist landscapes must be seen as more than superficial responses to economic restructuring and deindustrialisation, it argues that these practices are in no way simple, uncontested constructions of identity and culture. Rather, cultural and heritage tourism practices may be sites where a fundamental symbolic struggle is waged over that identity and culture: over the meaning and representation of place and of ‘home’. Je propose que les paysages touristiques contemporains sont plus que des réponses superficielles à la restructuration économique et à la désindustrialisation.
