Abstract

This article aims to analyse the water policy of the French Protectorate in Morocco (1912–1956). After the proclamation of the protectorate, actions on the part of the new rulers affected both the modern and traditional water sectors. The authorities aimed to regulate water resources to help economic growth and favour the settlers living in the occupied areas. On the management side, they tried to adapt traditional institutions and practices to those of metropolitan France, while respecting tradition to some extent. During the first half of the 20th century, these colonial interventions caused profound changes in the established order, which can still be seen at the heart of water management systems used today in this part of the Maghreb. For the purposes of this article, we have adopted evolutionary and institutional theories and applied a methodology based on historical and anthropological analysis, with contributions from the fields of law, economics and geography.  相似文献

This paper was presented at the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Amerika Instituut in Amsterdam in September 1998. Participants were asked to reflect on the ‘making of America’ in their own research and teaching. The intention was therefore to exchange very personal perspectives on how scholars from different parts of the world interpret American studies. Teaching the history of the United States of America in the 19th and 20th centuries at graduate level has been profoundly influenced by my research interests in South African history and by political and cultural forces in the apartheid and post-apartheid eras.  相似文献

The image of the princess Anicia Juliana on the dedication page of the Vienna Dioscurides (ca. 512) is usually seen as a standard image of a learned lady. It is argued here that it should be seen in a wider context, as an image of dynastic ideology, associating Juliana with the ruler virtues sophia, phronesis and megalopsychia.  相似文献

Eclogue 6 is not odd, as alleged. Gallus fits the convention of Roman poets in Arcady. The Silenus song is generic, with various Greek antecedents. Silenus himself is drawn with humour, a neglected feature; his Lucretian tone may parody or pay tribute to that poet. Virgil is fond of singing mythological creatures. There is much linguistic‐thematic interplay with his other poetry. Eclogue 6 is studiedly pastoral, a synthesis of ingredients, beginning and ending with Virgil himself ‐ ‘Vir‐gilian’ is the appropriate label.  相似文献
