Abstract

Excavations on this site, undertaken by Paul Logue for EHS: Built Heritage DOE: NI, produced evidence for at least two phases of occupation outside Bishop's Gate, Londonderry during the 17th century. This occupation came to an end with a phase of activity dated to the commencement of the Jacobite siege in A.D. 1689. Further evidence of that siege was uncovered in the form of a ravelin ditch 2.8 m wide and 0.57 m in depth, constructed in early 1689 to front Bishop's Gate. The extant remains of a sally port interrupted the ditch. A nearby larger ditch, scarped from the sloping ground outside Double Bastion, measured a maximum of 8.4 m in width and 1.4 m in depth. This larger ditch may have been part of efforts to improve the City defences in the wake of the 1641 rebellion. Further evidence of conflict archaeology was recovered in the form of lead shot, weapon furniture and flint gunspalls.  相似文献

Ethno-territorial conflict is a common feature of human affairs, and efforts to understand and mitigate its impacts require an examination of how peoples, communities, and nations “lose;” specifically, what happens as and after they lose in terms of their relationship with place and space, and the associated effects on self and community identity. This article examines recent Apprentice Boys of Derry parades in Northern Ireland as a mechanism by which a community that has lost control of symbolically significant space seeks to demonstrate an ongoing attachment to critical places. Twice-yearly parades allow Protestants to narrate their experience in the town of Derry/Londonderry as a victory, despite circumstantial evidence which suggests otherwise. The ability to claim victory through parading provides members of the Apprentice Boys organization with a raison d'etre, and serves in place of an aggressive agenda to regain control of territorial icons. The article draws upon extensive fieldwork, including interviews with key figures on both sides of the sectarian divide, and explores the nature of the community and the evolution of its parades as Protestants have lost influence in the town since the onset of Northern Ireland's Troubles. It suggests that, in the study of ethno-territorial conflicts, attention should be paid to the tactics of those who lose hegemony, as their actions affect the potential for conflict management and the likelihood of ongoing strife.  相似文献

中国文字是象形文字,文字来自于现实中的事物,用实物解读文字是有效的方法。方辉《说雷及雷神》一文可谓以物解字的代表作。甲骨文中的■(申)字,先前的学者大多都认为是闪电的形状,并以此为基础考释相关文字。方辉:《说雷及雷神》认为所谓■(申),为雷公的侧视形象,由此推论甲骨文、金文中的雷字乃像雷公击鼓之形。雷公的原型为猴,而猴与申字相联。作者利用大量考古实物与文献资料相结合进行了缕析,将申、雷(公)、猴之间的联系,从商代卜辞到秦汉典籍、图像,一一罗列出来,做出了可信的分析和推论。在古代文献中,雷神的形象变化较多,鸟、猪、熊、龙等都曾作为雷神形象出现。但雷公为猴形的记载很多,民间流传也很广,《酉阳杂俎》描述雷神忽骤风雨,有物堕如玃,两目睒睒。《客中间集》也说霹雳之中,亦有物焉,其形如猴而小,尖嘴肉翅,雷收声后,亦入蛰。山行之人,往往多于土穴中得之,谓之雷公所以,将申、雷公与猴联系在一起十分可信。雷神在历史早期的信仰中占有重要地位,虽然随着宗教信仰和神灵系统的发展,雷神地位逐渐下降,但商周时期雷神地位依然十分重要。商周时期大量云雷纹,大家虽然相信其中含有宗教方面的意义,但都提不出具体的解释。如果方氏的结论成立,那么对于认识商周信仰将产生积极的影响。  相似文献

纪昀的《阅微草堂笔记》中的雷神故事,表现出我国古代雷神崇拜的民俗以及雷神故事的道教渊源,彰显其神道设教的创作目的。纪昀借雷神这一民间话语,宣传忠孝节义的封建正统思想,以期有助于社会安定,人心归善。纪昀对社会道德沦丧感触颇深,以“神道设教”以示劝惩,他看到纲常大坏,世风日下,欲以此补充道德法律、文明教化之不足,以期使人远恶向善,以维护封建统治的正常秩序。纪昀写的雷神故事是让人相信天网恢恢,疏而不漏,恶行终有恶报的观念。这些故事有一些封建迷信色彩,虽然语颇荒诞,似出寓言,然神道设教,使人知畏,亦警世之苦心。  相似文献

始建于1907年的石家庄大石桥是近代石家庄的标志性建筑之一。本文通过对历史照片及档案资料的考证,说明此桥并非像大多数著述所记载的那样,同时跨越了正太铁路和京汉铁路;大石桥的拱券数量既不是22孔或23孔,也不是11孔,而是22跨石拱和2跨钢架孔;目前作为省级文物保护单位的大石桥,并未完整地保持其原始的结构面貌。  相似文献

Abstract

This paper reads the book of Jonah through the lens of moral geography. It focuses on the topic of the Great City, treating Nineveh as a character within the text, seeking to explore the question as to whether there is an urban morality which can be identified by reading the text of Jonah alongside key works from the field of cultural geography. In particular the paper discusses the parallelism between human and social embodiment as channels for exploring urban identity. In this study urban evil takes its place within a wider concept of city morality when it is measured by the tension between city-state as a powerful political force and the vulnerability and finitude of urban populations.  相似文献

2018年6月至8月,为配合津石高速公路工程施工,河北省文物研究所、廊坊市文物管理处、大城县文物管理所组成联合考古队,对位于廊坊市大城县工程区域内的东段燕南长城进行了考古发掘。通过此次发掘,对燕南长城的修建方式有了准确了解,验证了以往燕南长城的调查结论,同时明确了大城县境内的燕南长城堤防功能大于御敌功能。  相似文献

Swarms of police drones, fleets of overhead delivery bots, and flocks of private security drones are set to multiply the complex interfaces between state, capital, and sense. This paper explores the military and economic enclosure of the atmosphere by drones. For centuries, capitalist enclosure has privatized and secured common spaces: territorializing new power relations into the soil. Enclosure now operates through an increasingly atmospheric spatiality. The birth of airpower enabled new vertical regimes of state power, capital accumulation, and violence. Now, drones are materializing both intimate and pervasive colonizations of local, national, and international airspace. Crucially, this discloses new morphologies and ontologies of urban (in)security, in which an atmospheric state polices deterritorialized aerial circulations. Such a reenchanted atmosphere collapses the geopolitical and geoeconomic in uncertain robotic orbits. This paper, which connects past and present, is driven by a deeper concern for the existential dimensions of dronified skyscapes, subjects, and violence.  相似文献
