It is known that, according to Rousseau, the voice of conscience speaks instantaneously, and immediately ratifies the good that reason presents to it. The ferocious corruption that strengthens the progress of knowledge, the tumult of conversations or spectacles, however, prevent modern man from listening to his conscience, at the moment when society requires its engagement: the actuality of corrupted relations that enclose the individual gains ground against the presence of moral imperatives in his heart. Therefore Rousseau’s moral philosophy cannot dispense with a theory of memory: the latter permits thedictamen of the conscience to be disengaged from the transitory passions that subject us to contemporaries; it disengages the horizon of an authentic freedom and a responsibility that creates the person’s permanence, in regard to the soul’s immortality. In sum, we show here that in Rousseau’s eyes, reform is accomplished in a conversion narrative.

This article studies the correct generic framing of an early work of Lope de Vega,Los comendadores de Córdoba, which has attracted recent criticism, in part because the structure of tragedy is undermined by numerous laughable and grotesque elements. It therefore seems to be a play characterized by failure to follow the path of a specific genre. This article tries to overcome this problem by studying the relationship between gender and violence.

Through the discussion of a problem posed around 1639 by Bernard Frenicle de Bessy, its solution and the replies of his correspondents, we shall describe several overlapping registers of Frenicle's exprience: an experimentation on numbers partly borrowed from the natural sciences, the demands of a collective practice cemented together by problems and their explicit construction, a personal training in attention and savoir-faire. All these come together in Frenicle's efforts to contest the supremacy of algebraic analysis and in the modes of conviction which are at the base of his work. In return, this account of a mathematical and collective experiment allows us to appreciate the difficulties for Frenicle in transmitting his results and for his historians in reconstructing his activity.
