As part of a program aimed at deriving the true influx to the Earth of small meteoroids we have measured the height distribution of radio meteors to limiting magnitude + 6 (mass ~ 1.0 mg) at a frequency of 6 MHz for the combined Daytime Arietid and Zeta Perseid showers, and also for the Eta Aquarids; these showers have widely different velocities but no substantial dependence upon velocity is apparent. The distributions peak at ~ 105 km, 10 km above the peak found using conventional VHP meteor radars and in line with observations previously made by us at 2 MHz. Instrumental limitations confine the span of heights to 84 <h <116 km, but it is notable that within this range the 6 MHz height distributions appear to be symmetric, with a swift drop-off above 105 km; this contrasts with the asymmetric 2 MHz distribution which showed a slow drop-off with many meteors to 140 km. The origin of this difference is probably due to diffusion and the finite-velocity effect, which will be considered in a subsequent paper.  相似文献

Conventional meteor radars, operating at wavelengths of around 5–15 m, are unable to detect high-altitude meteors due to the wavelength-dependent echo ceiling. It is suggested that the ‘missing mass’ in the 10−6–10−2 g range of interplanetary material is in fact a high-velocity component which is normally undetected since it ablates at high altitude. This contention is supported by previous work. In this paper we describe measurements of the heights of radio meteors (limiting magnitude about +7) at a wavelength of 150 m (frequency 2 MHz), for which the echo ceiling is above 140 km. The resultant true height distribution is found to peak at ~ 104 km, about 10 km above the peak found by conventional meteor radars. The majority of meteors are detected at or above this peak, and substantial numbers are seen right up to 140 km. It is therefore concluded that the ‘missing mass’, comprising the vast majority of the meteoric input to the atmosphere, ablates well above 100 km.  相似文献

Radio waves in a stratified plasma can sometimes penetrate through a region where, according to a simple ray theory, they would be evanescent. They emerge on the far side in a different magnetoionic mode. This occurs when the incident wave normal is within a small cone of angles, called a radio window. The best known example is the Ellis window, used to explain the Z-trace in ionosonde records. Other phenomena where windows may be important have recently been studied. Simple approximate formulae are given for the transmission coefficient of a window and for its angular widths. These show the dependence on frequency, electron concentration gradient and direction of the ambient magnetic field. Comparison with more accurate calculations shows that these formulae are likely to be reliable in practical applications. The tracing of rays near a window is discussed, and the properties of a second kind of window are described.  相似文献

Measurements of radio waves partially reflected from the D-region made using two antennae of very different beamwidth are reported. The arrays are composed of 40 and 4 dipoles respectively. It is shown that the gain of the larger array over the smaller is often variable—both in height and time. These results can be used to estimate the off-vertical angles from which significant energy is returned. For altitudes less than 80 km angles less than 10° seem to be usual but at higher altitudes the angles increase to values of the order of 15°–20°. Other important properties of the echoes, such as the probability distribution of the amplitude were also measured. The results are discussed with particular reference to the differential absorption method of measuring electron densities and also to the nature of the irregularities responsible for the partial reflections.  相似文献

Angles of arrival of first echoes (those directly reflected from the ionosphere) and second echoes (those twice reflected from the ionosphere with an intermediate reflection from the ground) were measured. It is easy to show that under specified conditions the off-vertical angle of arrival of the second echo ought to be twice that of the first echo. It is consistently found to be less than this for much of the time. Several possibilities are canvassed, but none provide a convincing explanation. The place on the Earth from which the second echo was reflected was nearly always the sea or flat ground. Apparently, rapid phase variations, as the tilt of the ionosphere changed, prevented recognition of the second echo by this particular radar system for echoes reflected from rough terrain.  相似文献

The conduct of American military physicians in prisoner of war (POW) camps has been called into question by the abuse scandals at Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay. This essay explores the experiences of the first U.S. military physicians to confront POW patients in large numbers-events that occurred during the American Civil War. While POWs received sub-standard care in camps north and south, the war also saw the issuance of the first document to outline the rights of POWs. This ambivalence toward the proper care and treatment of the POW is evident in the career of Dr. Eugene Sanger, the first Union surgeon at the prison camp in Elmira, New York. Sanger demonstrated both concern about the sanitary condition of the camp and pride in the deaths of POWs as furthering the overall war aims. His cruelty attracted some censure, but Sanger never faced disciplinary action. He was honorably discharged and went on to become the Surgeon General of his home state. This article places his actions at Elmira in the context of medical ethics, Army orders, and Northern opinion in 1864, and it will argue that the lack of Federal response to Eugene Sanger's poor record while serving at the prison set a precedent for inferior medical care of POWs by American military physicians.  相似文献

Estimates of the height of the F-layer peak based on formulations using the ionospheric transmission factor M(3000)F2 are compared with hmF2 derived from the real height analysis of digital ionograms acquired at a mid-latitude station. Based on the analysis of 27 hours of quiet data, our result shows that the M(3000)F2 methods are highly accurate and that the formulation developed by Bradley P. A. and Dudeney J. R., (1973, J. atmos. terr. Phys. 35, 2131) is most accurate.  相似文献

Measurements of the E-region electron density were made with the Saint-Santin incoherent scatter radar during consecutive days in June 1978, March 1979 and December 1980. On the basis of a statistical study, the observations show the presence of a diurnal asymmetry of the electron density, with morning values usually exceeding the afternoon densities by 3–20%. Two possible causes of the dissymmetry are examined: the asymmetry in the diurnal variation of the neutral composition and the effect of nitric oxide. The presence of NO partly converts O2+ into NO+ ions and increases the effective recombination rate of the electrons in the afternoon. Numerical simulations assessing the relative importance of the two factors are, in general, in good agreement with the measurements.  相似文献

The difficulties in the estimation of relative frequencies of species are discussed and a new approach to the recording of bone is proposed. This approach eliminates various biases and allows minimum numbers of individuals and counts of identified specimens to be derived from the same data. Observations of neutral winds and temperatures obtained using a FabryPerot interferometer at Beveridge (37°28′S, 145°6′E) have been combined with h'F measurements from ionosondes at Canberra (35°21′S, 149°10′E) and Hobart (42°54′S, 147° 12′E). Data from 16 nights have been used to study the response (height change) of the F2-layer to changes in neutral wind and temperature. The observations have been compared with the ‘servo’ model of Rishbeth. It is found that the ‘night stationary level’ of the F2-layer depends on temperature, with the height changing by (13 ± 6) km per 100K. This agrees well with the prediction of the ‘servo’ model. There is reasonable overall agreement between the observations and the model predictions for the change in height produced by a given meridional wind. However, there is considerable scatter in the individual comparisons due to the approximations used to apply the theory to the observations. In particular, the effect of electric fields on the F2-layer height has been ignored.  相似文献

The effects of the IMF radial (Bx) and azimuthal (By) components on the distribution of polar cap arcs are examined using all-sky camera data from Vostok station for the winter months of 1977–1985. We conclude that three factors control the character of the aurora distribution: the type of the sector structure, the IMF radial component, and the IMF azimuthal component. Based on the experimental results, the following scheme for the auroral distribution in the northern and southern polar caps for different signs of Bx and By is put forward. The ‘garden hose’ structure (Bx > 0, By < 0 or Bx < 0, By > 0) produces symmetric auroral distributions in the morning and evening sectors of both the northern and southern polar caps; the ‘orthogonal garden hose’ structure (Bx > 0, By > 0 or Bx < 0, By < 0) is evidently inefficient in the production of aurorae. The Bx component determines the intensity of aurorae in that polar cap where geomagnetic field lines are in the opposite direction to the IMF (Bx < 0 in the case of the northern cap, and Bx > 0 for the southern cap) and produces the daytime auroral belt poleward of the auroral oval and parallel to it. The By component affects the auroral appearance in the morning or evening sectors of the polar cap, depending on its sign, and acts asymmetrically in the opposite polar cap. The appropriate patterns of plasma filament distributions in the high-latitude tail lobes are proposed. The characteristics of auroral movements affected by the By component (such as the direction and speed of the arc motion and the magnitude of displacements) are examined.  相似文献

The effect of transverse wind velocity on the amplitude scintillations of millimetre radio waves is studied. Scintillation data obtained on two line-of-sight microwave links at 36 GHz and 110 GHz on a common 4.1 km path are used to estimate the wind velocity perpendicular to the propagation path. The estimated wind velocity is within 20% of the value obtained from direct measurements using a conventional anemometer.  相似文献

Distance is a key idea in contemporary literatures on geography and the government of risk, and it is central to the work presented in this paper, which focuses on Western media representations of an innovative ‘first-generation’ non-contraceptive microbicide, Carraguard. A preventive technology that has been developed under the auspices of the US Population Council and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Carraguard is represented in the media in ways that produce certain noteworthy cultural geographies of HIV/AIDS. Via an analysis of a selection of such media representations of Carraguard, and focusing on sexual citizenship, political subjectivity and three socio-spatial orderings of risk (displacement, replacement and reorientation), we posit that Carraguard has effected a feminization of the government of risk at a distance. Specifically, we contend that HIV/AIDS has been displaced from the marginalized spaces of metropolitan centres of the West and replaced at the world's under-developed margins, being reoriented from dangerousness/deviance and the masculine to risk and the feminine in that process. In this work, we have taken up Dean's (1999) call to use an analytics of government to highlight the effects of certain ways of thinking and acting, and have also sought to respond to observations by Craddock (2000) that the silences in geography about HIV/AIDS and the regional coordinates of risk and vulnerability need to be addressed. In the final analysis, it appears that media representations of Carraguard reproduce and intensify much older geopolitical and socio-spatial orderings and relations of power that give effect to conceptions and practices of political obligation and sexual citizenship.  相似文献

Using a large assemblage of domestic fowl bones from a classical site, a methodology is presented that allows the recognition of breeds. The approach differs from previous research in which tarsometatarsi were used exclusively. In the present paper, frequency histograms of long bone lengths and mixture analysis were combined with observations on medullary bone development. By concentrating on the analysis of bones with medullary bone, only the securely sexed part of the population (the females) is considered, thereby avoiding problems related to the use of spur development in tarsometatarsi. Three breeds of different sizes could be recognized, of which the smallest shows a high incidence of spurred females.  相似文献
