Menschenbild und Wirtschaftsordnung: Der Menschenbegriff im Kameralismus und in der National?konomie

This essay addresses the construction of human nature in cameralism and early German political economy. It suggests that the emergent economic sciences in Germany propounded a vision of human beings that stressed the psycho‐physiological roots of human behavior in general, and of economic activity in particular. In this vision, human beings possessed a body and soul whose constant interaction gave rise to needs and desires, and thus to the drive to behave as economic agents. Here the cameralists and early German political economists adopted conceptions of human nature current in the ‘Sciences of Man’ of the Enlightenment. This stress on the non‐rational, psycho‐physiological aspects of human nature prevented the theoretical construction of a stable human social life, and in this way justified the continued need for governmental oversight and control of economic activity.

Das DLR: Hoch hinaus und bodenständig

Das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V. (DLR), wird vielfach, sicherlich im wesentlichen durch seine Namensgebung begründet, nur mit „h?heren Zielen” in Verbindung gebracht; sei es durch die D2-Space-Shuttle-Mission oder das Deutsche Fernerkundungsdatenzentrum (DFD) des DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen. Bei letzterem kann man sich den Einsatz von Geographen gut vorstellen. Die „irdische” Komponente des DLR, die wenig oder keine Verbindungen zur Luft- und Raumfahrt aufweist, bietet aber durchaus ebenso Besch?ftigungsm?glichkeiten für unsere Zunft, wie das Beispiel von Dipl.-Geogr. Annette Bona unterstreicht, die als Projektmanagerin in der Organisationseinheit „Innovationsmanagement und Technologiemarketing” am K?lner Standort besch?ftigt ist. Mit ihr unterhielt sich J?rg Franzen M. A. über die weniger bekannten, bodengebundenen T?tigkeiten des DLR und ihren spezifischen Anteil daran.

Raumordnung, Stadtentwicklung und Städtebau in den Niederlanden

In den Niederlanden spielen Raumordnung, Stadtentwicklung und St?dtebau eine bedeutende Rolle. Baukultur, Planungsmethoden und Beteiligungsverfahren werden über die Grenzen des Landes hinaus diskutiert, niederl?ndische Architektur ist ein Exportschlager. Der vorliegende Beitrag erl?utert das Planungsverst?ndnis und gibt eine Einführung in die Rahmenbedingungen der Stadtentwicklung; er beschreibt die Randstad Holland und stellt bedeutende st?dtebauliche Projekte vor. Der Beitrag dient damit auch der Vorbereitung einer Exkursion, die der Arbeitskreis Stadtentwicklung im Frühjahr 2003 unternimmt, um sich vor Ort mit Fragen der Stadtentwicklung in den Niederlanden auseinanderzusetzen. How do Goya's representations of the body disrupt the Enlightenment's configurations of the corporeal? If for eighteenth-century aesthetics the body is both the site of ideal beauty and the limit of what can and may be represented, then Goya's panoply of monsters provides a way of understanding other modes of reason(ing), other ways of representing the body and its functions within culture. In his work there is a recuperation of those elements that seem to lie outside the ken of the Enlightenment project: physicality, animality, hybridity, the grotesque, the popular; a recognition of the animal nature of the body and the products of bodily impulses and forces. A rethinking of the body would incorporate an understanding of its role as a physical and social phenomenon in the constitution of the subject. Following on from Paul Ilie's concept of counter-rational Reason, which he defines as the opposite of a uniform centre of rationality in representative thought, the first half of my paper will consider Goya's problematization of representation. My analysis of a selection of drawings from the collection Los Caprichos (1799) will focus not just on the representation of bodies in the painter's work but on his exploration of bodies in their material variety—configurations of modes of constructing the body. This examination of Goya's prolific pictorial negotiations and adaptations of flesh and world will draw upon contemporary approaches to theorizing the body, namely the theories of Julia Kristeva and Elizabeth Grosz.
