La DéontoLogie Ethnographique À l’Épreuve du Documentaire

This article offers a comparison of the legal suits filed by the interviewees against the director of the documentary être et avoir (to have and to be) with the rights of interviewees in ethnographic investigations, focusing particularly on image copyrights and labor law. To say that interviewees contribute to such investigations in anonymity does not solve the main problem - they are crucial to the investigation, marginal to the analysis, and then are assigned no publication credits. While information about the interviewees should remain confidential, this article argues, that contribution and role in the making of a publication should not be ignored.     

HISTOIRE DE LA DÉGLACIATION ET DES ANCIENS LACS DES BASSINS DES RIVIÉRES COATICOOK ET MOE,SUD DU QUÉBEC ET NORD DU VERMONT

Vers 11 200 ans aa , I'inlandsis se retire dans le sens du drainage des rivières Coaticook et Moe, provoquant un endiguement des eaux de fusion dans ces deux vallées. Le premier lac d'importance se crée à 420 m d'altitude et l'écoulement des eaux se fait vers le bassin de la rivière Connecticut. Cette étape de la déglaciation est marquée dans le paysage par la présence de la Moraine de Dixville. Des niveaux lacustres subséquents, s'étageaient entre 410 et 225 m d'altitude. Ces lacs se draineront vers l'ouest, jusqu'à être intégrés au lac proglaciaire Memphrémagog vers 235 m d'altitude. Suite au retrait des lacs proglaciaires, des lacs de barrage morainique s'installent dans certains segments de vallée, dont un en amont de la ville de Coaticook à 290 m d'altitude et un autre en amont de la ville de Waterville æ 220 m d'altitude. Dans cette étude, on établit aussi les corrélations avec les phases de déglaciation reconnues dans la région voisine, celle du lac Memphrémagog, et on précise le mode de déglacement de la région, en discutant des différents schémas régionaux proposés précédemment.     

La Naissance Posthume D’Évariste Galois (1811–1832)

The publication of Galois' works in the Journal de Liouville (1846) was announced during a debate between academicians Libri and Liouville as early as 1843. Rather than limiting this publication to a study of controversy, we would like to show that it is inscribed in a larger context of the redefinition of algebra, which this debate illuminates. In order to understand the rediscovery of Galois, it must be inscribed in the median time of mathematical practices and usages.     

La Carrière des Publications D’ettore Majorana une Étude Bibliométrique

This article analyzes the reception of Ettore Majorana’s articles by tracing all the references made to them since the beginning of the 1930s. This methodology allows me to show that Ettore Majorana’s 1937 piece on spin-1/2 particles was largely rediscovered during the 1960s, but also to identify the people who actively promoted Majorana’s work, which has loomed larger in scientific debates since the 1970s. Analyzing co-citations, this article shows the conceptual network in which Majorana’s work fits.     

Les Théoriciens Italiens de la Raison D’État Carrières et Motivations

The article tries to shed light on the careers and the motivations of Italian authors who wrote on reason of State in the period of 1550 to 1650. Half of them were clergymen in very different positions, joined by lawyers, physicians and men of letters. Especially many clergymen were teaching at universities in the hope of getting a position at a court. Apart from this endeavour to become a secretary or councillor of a prince or a cardinal, the main motivations of writing the treatises were the refutation of the machiavellian ideas and the desire to open new areas of action for the prince, but also the defence of republican liberties. As the treatises and collections of maxims were to a great extent literary, the influence on rationalisation of the State is judged with scepticism.     

Evaluating the Manufacturing and Retailing Practices of H. J. & D. Nicoll through a c. 1860 Boy’s Suit

A boy’s suit of fawn wool sold by H. J. & D. Nicoll of London, dated c. 1860, in the Fashion Museum, Bath, raises a number of issues. Combining the long trousers worn by adolescents with a jacket associated with younger boys, it marks a turning point in age-related dress codes. Mass produced but with hand stitching, it presents evidence of the exploitative practices Nicoll had been charged with in Henry Mayhew’s Morning Chronicle letters in 1850. The prominent labelling of the suit relates to Nicoll’s publicity strategies and to the importance of boys’ clothing for ready-to-wear retailers. A comparison of the suit with other surviving garments and with marketing documents illuminates the way that Nicoll positioned itself within the retail market. The rarity of this survival and the scarcity of information on a high-profile and long-lasting retailer make this an important case study for investigating the origins of the ready-to-wear clothing trade in Britain.
