Recently Discovered Lords' Lists and their Uses, 1833–42*

This note deals with previously unpublished lists which identify the party affiliations, whig, Liberal, and Conservative, of members of the house of lords from 1833 to 1842. They were prepared by the chief whips (or in one case the party leader) of their respective parties, and can thus be considered authoritative. Such information is invaluable in properly understanding the political history of the house of lords, and therefore of the nation.     

On Crannoges,and Remains Discovered in them

The discovery is reported of a timber from North Ferriby here interpreted as a piece of boat-planking and therefore the fourth boat-find from that intertidal site. The implications of its radiocarbon age are discussed. Although only a small fragment, the find has some highly significant features and it is argued that it is a piece of a sheerstrake of a boat, conceivably of a late version of the Ferriby-type hitherto represented by the three examples dated to the second millennium B.C. On the strength of the arguments put forward the first author has incorporated key-features into the hypothetical design for a complete Ferriby boat recently developed in collaboration with J. F. Coates.

Roman Villa,Discovered at Bisley,Gloucestershire

In 1973 the Watch Hill barrow in St Stephen-in-Brannel, Cornwall was excavated and demonstrated to be a complex structure. However, at the time it was only possible to arrange two radiocarbon determinations, from the same pit in the base of the ditch. As part of postgraduate research carried out at the University of Exeter, the archive was revisited and funding obtained for a further four radiocarbon determinations from the ditch and central burial within the barrow. The six radiocarbon determinations together ranged between 2140 and 1680 cal. BC. The results are significant as they indicate that the site was in use over several centuries with the burial occurring towards the end of activity.

2007年下半年,河北唐山市郊发现了一批尖首刀币。经了解,是修建公路施工过程中挖土机在距地表1．5米处挖出的,罐装;当时陶罐破碎,刀币随即流失,部分进入钱币市场。现将这批材料作简要报道,以便学术界研究、参考。     

Notice of Inscriptions and Antiquities,Discovered at Caerleon

This paper presents some of the background information considered necessary to expand the archaeological uses of aerial photography. Some problems encountered recording archaeological features from the air are discussed but the paper concentrates on the subsequent use of aerial photographs and covers the interpretation and plotting of archaeological features, use of different map scales, and outlines two schemes for the presentation of completed drawings which show air photograph evidence. The uses and potential of morphological analysis are included, as are comments on the relevance of fieldwork to air photograph interpretation.

An appendix considers the application of geophysical techniques to air photograph sites, and the deductions that may be derived from these non-destructive methods.     

寿县西圈发现的墓葬

寿春城遗址西部清理的3座墓葬,从建造规模及随葬的铜饰件、车马器、铜剑来看,均为中型墓葬,年代可能为春秋晚期,该墓地很可能是历史上的蔡国故地。     

Protected Areas,Country and Value: The Nature–Culture Tyranny of the IUCN's Protected Area Guidelines for Indigenous Australians

“Protected areas” is the formal definition for the global network of conservation places, including marine and terrestrial reserves, which are overseen by the IUCN through instruments such as the Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories (Guidelines). In the long‐term conservation of nature, the Guidelines embed a nature–culture dualism, upon which the values of each are ascribed and weighted. This binary does not recognise relational values of Indigenous peoples to land or encompass worldviews beyond the restricted choice of the dualism. Through two Australian Aboriginal case studies, I reveal tensions in classifying cultural values for protected areas under the limited Guidelines offerings and provide an alternative engagement, through reassessing the means and scope by which values are assigned, for greater equity to Indigenous peoples.

河南鹤壁古代陶窑遗址浅析

自 198 8年始 ,在配合鹤壁城市建设中 ,先后发现了一批不同年代的古代陶窑遗址 ,对认识古代中原地区的社会经济和古代鹤壁地区的制陶、制瓷等手工业的发展 ,有着极为重要的意义     

吉林省和龙西沟发现的旧石器

2006年6月发现,该地点位于和龙市龙城镇西沟村西南,距西沟村约800米的Ⅳ级侵蚀阶地上。在地表采集石器102件,包括石核、石片、石叶、断片、断块、废片、1类工具、2类工具和3类工具。原料以黑曜岩为主,占69.61%,其次是石英、石英岩、凝灰岩、板岩等。属于以小石器为主体的工业向以细石器为主体的工业过渡的类型。推测该地点年代为旧石器时代晚期。     

《新历史教科书》与战后日本国家的历史认识

本对2001年4月3日由日本部科学省审定“合格”获得通过的《新历史教科书》歪曲历史事实、美化侵略战争、宣扬错误史观、掩饰日本国家侵略罪恶。进而反映战后日本国家错误历史认识的表述和企图进行了分析和评论,并试图对日本国家错误的历史认识的形成原因进行初步的探讨。章认为：战后日本社会对其侵略历史的错误认识,是有着历史基础、思想基础、国际环境基础和经济基础的,是与战后几次国际政治格局的重大变化、美国对日本的单独占领和不久之后其对日政策的改变以及日美同盟关系的确立和固化、战后国际社会对日本战争罪行和军国主义思想的清算不彻底、战后日本国家在与周边国家的关系重建过程中对各种有利因素的充分利用、战后日本国内经济的恢复及其经济大国地位的确立、近期日本国内大国主义思潮的盛行及经济状况的不景气和政治局面的动荡,以及亚洲邻国对日本这种趋势发生发展的相对无力的应对等等诸多方面的因素之间存在着极其密切的关系。     

陕西铜川市印台区发现瓷器窖藏

2003年8月30日,铜川市印台区红土镇东王村西王组村民在取土过程中发现瓷器窖藏.印台区文物部门闻讯后随即对出土地点进行了全面勘查,在当地公安部门协助下,共追回各类文物标本62件.主要为瓷器,另有少量铜铁残器.现将结果简报如下.     

Historic preservation,the state and nationalism in Britain

The paper discusses the relationship between the state, historic buildings preservation and nationalism in Britain from the nineteenth century to the present. It argues against the idea that, because of comparatively continuous nation and state formation, state preservation in Britain until the mid twentieth was exceptionally weak. By suggesting a broader understanding of ‘the state’, the paper shows the variety of ways in which institutions within the state were, and remain, involved. Through spotlights on major turning points in the administrative framework, it further argues that nationalism has been more often mobilized to foster state preservation than the other way round and suggests to place nationalism alongside other motive forces to understand the rise and transformation of state involvement in preservation.
