Crisis,urgency and the problem of discernment

Crises proliferate. Not just as labels but as the actual state of affairs, of impasse, ruination and breakdown. As an anthropologist working on Syria with extensive fieldwork inside the country before the uprising of 2011, and later with ongoing fieldwork in Lebanon, Jordan and with exiled Syrians in Europe, I find it safe to say that crisis is polyvalent. Crisis is slow and urgent as it moves with Syrians in time and across locations. This piece argues that we need urgent engagement with slow forms of crisis and slow engagement with calls to urgency. This calls for an exercise in discernment, which takes urgency and claims it as a diagnostic for ethnographic exploration.

宗教与社会工作都具有“助人”的功能。从中国社会的实际来看,无论是制度化宗教还是分散性宗教,都具有许多值得社会工作学习和借鉴的地方。其主要体现在以行善和奉献为特点的价值观、本土化的助人方法、教内互助和社会慈善相结合的制度以及宗教场所接近社区的空间分布形式等方面。宗教在中国民间社会长期而有效的“助人”经验,是中国社会工作本土化值得利用的资源。     

略论书法艺术的创作灵感——以草书为例

The ‘invisible’ hearths: a contribution to the discernment of Mesolithic non-structured surface hearths

In the cover sand area of the NW European plain very little is known about fireplaces within Mesolithic settlement areas. Yet the frequent occurrence of burnt ecofacts (hazelnut shells and bone) and artefacts (flint and quartzite) clearly indicates the presence of (surface) hearths on nearly every campsite. Most of these hearths are non-structured and are thus barely visible in the soil. Furthermore in most spatial studies minimal effort has been made to locate these ‘invisible’ hearths as accurately as possible. This paper discusses the potential and modalities of detailed spatial analysis of burnt artefacts and ecofacts, using recently obtained archaeological and experimental evidences. It is concluded that such an analysis can offer interesting insights into the dynamics of Mesolithic hearths.

Searching for feminist geography in Thailand: mapping trails of inspiration

Abstract

Feminist geography in Thailand is not generally recognized in the academic landscape. Instead, feminist geography is limited to those scholars located in Women’s Studies who have a research or personal interest in the theoretical, conceptual or empirical issues taken up in feminist geography. Although the discipline of geography has been part of the Thai academy since 1935, in both the Thai Geographical Association and its flagship journal, (Geographical Journal), feminist geography has still not made significant inroads into the discipline. However, once Women’s Studies was established, and then expanded its influence, gender and feminism affected every other social science program, including Geography. Even though only a few, if any, students enrolled in feminist geography courses across Thailand, the work that did exist took on a postcolonial form. Thus the feminist geography literature that would introduce (some part of) the theories, concepts and practice of feminist geographers came through both compulsory and elective courses through a postcolonial lens. In this report, we provide a brief history of the challenges around, and progress of, feminist geography across the country through an analysis of key Thai geographical institutional shifts, journal publications and curricular offerings.

大、小戴《礼记》为戴德、戴圣所编,从《汉书》到孔颖达《礼记正义》都有定论。但自宋代开始,历代均有学者或对今本《礼记》为二戴所编表示怀疑,或提出“新说”。这些怀疑和“新说”虽然大部分遭到前人的否定,但他们提出的有些证据仍然没有被驳倒;近人洪业提出的几个疑点尚未获得令人满意的解答;还有一些学人未能吸收前人的研究成果,仍然在使用被证明为错误的说法。因此有必要对古今人在这个问题上的种种误说进行清理。
