Comments on a paper entitled “sudden neutral sodium layers: A strong link to sporadic e layers” by U. Von Zahn and T. L. Hansen

Observations of thin, enhanced, layers within the atmospheric sodium layer have recently been interpreted in the literature as resulting from the liberation of sodium from dust particles by the effect of auroral particle precipitation. In this note we point out that one of the assumptions on which the argument for this mechanism is based is incorrect, and that direct deposition of meteoric material is more likely to be the cause of the observed enhancements.     

“We're not a paper for working women,but of and by them”: Australian communist party womens’ papers 1930–1939

Historical studies of the radical left in Australia have, until recently, been neglectful of the contribution of female activists. The specific problems and issues faced by these women have been largely ignored. For instance, the principal academic history of the CPA mentions in passing only a handful of prominent women members and alludes to no issues which were of specific concern to the female membership of the CPA (Davidson, 1969). However, despite a ’line’ which opposed separate womens’ organisations, the CPA was sufficiently mindful of the specificity of a range of issues facing women to establish a separate national women's journal in 1930. This journal was called Working Woman, and continued in publication until 1936, when it was succeeded by a new journal entitled Woman Today, which went out of existence in 1939.     

Value number consideration ‐ a new appraisal. Comments on the site Hein 33: Typological and chronological problems of the new stone age of Southern Norway by Svein Indrelid,NAR 9, No. 1, 1976

Value number combination as a typological method is discussed and found to be useful, if laborious, for achieving precise expressions of types on a quantitative basis. Its value in the search for prehistoric type concepts is regarded as a matter for discussion and as dependent on careful consideration of the typological properties employed. The discussion is illustrated with an experiment with Late Neolithic shaft‐hole axes from Østfold, SE Norway. The axes were found to fall into two separate groups, each possibly representing a prehistoric type.

In this comment, the author argues that the conclusions reached by Vale and Gargett [Size matters: 3-mm sieves do not increase richness in a fishbone assemblage from Arrawarra I, an Aboriginal Australian shell midden on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia, Journal of Archaeological Science 29 (2002) 57–63] are based on questionable methods and the conclusions regarding the use of fine mesh screens are unsupported.
