Bjarmaland Revisited

The present article is devoted to the enigmatic Bjarmaland of the Old Norse sources. Where was Bjarmaland situated? Was there only one Bjarmaland , or were there several Bjarmalands ? The author approaches these questions by going through the historical sources mentioning Bjarmaland / Biarmonia / Biarmia . Second, she analyses the reception of Bjarmaland in Russian historical literature in the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, and finally, she gives her own opinion on the question of its localization, etymological origin and changing lexical content.     

Nyingchi Revisited

Dartmouth Revisited

As Dartmouth has been the only wreck of a man-of-war from the 17th century to have been published in a preliminary report, it has long been the benchmark wreck for this period. Since the date of the publication, however, research has uncovered information that was not available at the time and which may shed additional light on this interesting ship. This paper aims to contribute to our understanding of Dartmouth 's construction and her place as a typical small cruiser of the mid-17th century.

Glastonbury Revisited

This paper discusses various ways the concept of the past has been interpreted and used in Welsh antiquarian and folklore studies, beginning and ending with illustrations of popular concepts of “Welshness” in the tourism and heritage industries, and en route making a critique of “centre vs periphery” scholarly models. Special attention is paid to the work of the Celtic scholar Sir John Rhys and Iowerth Peate, the founder of the Welsh Folk Museum.

Archaeology as Anthropology Revisited

Anthropology was established in the USA during the middle of the nineteenth century. From the beginning, archaeology was considered a part of the discipline, a notion that continues to this day. However, over the course of the past 160 years, periodically, the place of archaeology within anthropology is questioned. Often, this has a reflection in the growth or shrinking in membership of the Archaeology Division of the American Anthropological Association. I explore these trends and try to explain them in terms of the history of anthropology.
