Wind measurements which were carried out during the MAP/WINE Campaign in northern Scandinavia between 2 December 1983 and 24 February 1984 are used to derive background winds and monthly as well as winter mean values from the ground up to 90 km altitude. These mean winds compare favourably to the wind field proposed for the revised CIRA 86, which is deduced from satellite measurements. The vertical structure of the zonal monthly means is similar in both data sets during January and February. The winter mean zonal winds are observed to be slightly stronger in the stratosphere and lower mesosphere during the MAP/WINE winter than the satellite winds proposed for CIRA 86. The long term mean meridional winds are in good agreement up to 60 km. They indicate a dominant influence of quasistationary planetary waves up to 90 km and an ageostrophic poleward flow between 60 km and 85 km over northern Scandinavia, which maximizes at 76 km at about 8 m s−1. The observed short term variability of the wind is discussed with respect to a possible impact of saturating gravity waves on the momentum budget of the middle atmosphere.  相似文献

Powerful, high frequency (HF) radio waves can be used to temporarily modify the ionosphere. These controlled, active experiments have proven useful both for studies of the natural upper atmosphere through observations of ionospheric response to HF induced perturbations, and for basic physics investigations exploiting the ionosphere as a large, natural plasma laboratory-without-walls. This experimental diversity has attracted the attention and participation of physicists from a wide range of disciplines. As a result, HF ionospheric modification research continues to be strongly motivated by its many applications in the fields of aeronomy, space physics, plasma physics, and telecommunications science.  相似文献

Throughout most of the Stone Age, which covers the time period between ca. 10,000 and ca. 3500 B.P., the majority of groups in northern Scandinavia was hunter-fishers with a strong orientation toward the coastal environments. Three areas, southwestern and northern Norway and northern Sweden, have been singled out for more detailed discussions of the social and cultural developments in different types of marine environments. Differences can be discerned between the societies in the southern and those in the northern regions, as the northern groups seem to have developed more complex social and cultural systems than in the south. These differences have been related partly to a greater emphasis on maritime sea hunting in the north. Agriculture was introduced twice. The first time, in the early Neolithic, agriculture was tried but apparently did not manage to compete with better-adapted local hunting-fishing practices. The second time, in the late middle Neolithic, agriculture resulted in drastic social, economic, and cultural changes.  相似文献

Stratosphere and mesosphere temperatures were measured during four winter months (November–February) at high latitudes (Andøya, ESRANGE) by means of numerous rocket flights during the Energy Budget Campaign 1980 and the MAP/WINE Campaign 1983–1984. They are compared to ground-based OH1 measurements and SSU satellite data. The atmosphere was found to be very active, with several minor and one major stratospheric warming occurring. A harmonic analysis of the temperature oscillations observed is performed and found to be suitable to model the atmospheric disturbances (warmings) to a large extent by superposition of waves with appropriate periods. These periods are of the order of several days and weeks and are thus similar to those of planetary waves. Stratospheric warmings tend to be correlated with mesospheric coolings, and vice versa. This is reproduced by the model, giving details of the phase relationships as they depend on altitude. These are found to be more complicated than just an anticorrelation of the altitude regimes. Strong phase changes occur in narrow altitude layers, with oscillation amplitudes being very small at these places. These ‘quiet layers’ are frequent phenomena and are independently found in the data sets of the two campaigns. They are tentatively interpreted as the nodes of standing waves.The time development of temperature altitude profiles shows strong variations that lead to peculiar features, such as a split stratopause or a near-adiabatic lapse rate in the mesosphere on occasion. The superposition model is able to reproduce these features, too. On one occasion it even shows super-adiabatic temperature gradients in the lower mesosphere for several days. Though this should be taken as an artifact, it nevertheless suggests a considerable contribution of the long period waves to atmospheric turbulence.The many rocket data are also used to determine monthly mean temperature profiles. These are compared to reference atmospheres recently developed for the CIRA (Barnett and Corney, 1985; Groves, 1985). Fair agreement is found, which is much better than with CIRA (1972). This is not true for February 1984, because of the major warming that occurred late in that month. Before this warming took place, atmospheric preconditioning appears to have been present for more than two months.  相似文献

As part of the MAP/WINE campaign (winter 1983–1984) and the MAC/SINE campaign (summer 1987) high resolution wind profiles were obtained in the upper mesosphere using the foil cloud technique. Vertical winds were derived from the fall rate of the foil clouds and are used for estimating the momentum fluxes associated with vertical wavelengths shorter than about 10 km. From the ensemble average of 15 observations over an altitude range of 74–89 km we calculate a zonal net momentum flux of +12.6 ± 4.5 m2s−2 in summer. The average of 14 measurements in winter between 73 and 85 km indicates a zonal net momentum flux of −3.7 ± 2.4 m22 s−2.  相似文献

Since the 1982/1983 winter, the UCL group, in collaboration with the Swedish Institute for Space Physics (previously Kiruna Geophysical Institute), has operated a Doppler imaging system at the high latitude station of Kiruna (67°N, 22°E). The Doppler imaging system is an imaging Fabry-Perot interferometer of 13.2 cm aperture. This instrument has been operated on a ‘campaign’ basis for mapping thermospheric winds using the OI emission at 630 nm (240 km altitude) from a region up to about 400 km radius about Kiruna. In November 1986, the performance of this wide-field Doppler imaging system was augmented by improvements to the detector and all-sky optics. We present data from December 1986, obtained during periods with both clear skies and active auroral and geomagnetic conditions. Maps of the neutral wind flow within the auororal oval during disturbed conditions and near magnetic midnight show continuous and rapid changes of thermospheric winds. The typical scale sizes of eddies observed within the mean flow around magnetic midnight are 100–300 km, with fluctuations at all time scales resolved by the 10 min between successive Doppler images. The local and short period fluctuations appear to be a filtered response of the thermosphere to rapid local variations of the convection and precipitation patterns, within a background of global scale changes  相似文献

A mechanism of strong turbulence is proposed for interpretation of the resonances observed by a wide-band receiver during topside sounding. The turbulence is created in the vicinity of the spacecraft due to the striction modulation instability. Experimental results obtained with the aid of a wide-band receiver on board the Intercosmos-19 satellite are discussed in terms of strong wave-wave and/or wave-particle interaction, namely electron acceleration in Langmuir cavitons and non-linear generation of the electron Langmuir plasma waves and Tonks-Dattner resonances.  相似文献

The view that eugenics was based on unscientific views has been put forward by a number of historians. It has been claimed that the early phase of eugenics, so-called mainline eugenics, was unscientific, biased against the lower classes, and racist. An ensuing reform eugenic phase, however, has been considered scientifically sound and politically progressive. This paper, based on recent studies of eugenic sterilisation in Scandinavia, challenges this view. The political and scientific arguments in favour of eugenic sterilisation laws in Scandinavia were complex and ambiguous, and it is empirically impossible to identify a problematic mainline eugenic phase and separate it from a more acceptable reform phase. Social and scientific arguments for sterilisation appeared side by side. To improve the gene pool was only one of a host of aims of eugenics, which “was” not a fixed, well-defined ontological entity with one definite purpose, but a concept with multiple meanings.  相似文献

The EISCAT incoherent scatter radar, operating in a full tristatic mode, provided data on the ionospheric plasma drift above northern Scandinavia, during the 24 h period, 11 UT 25 November to 11 UT 26 November 1982. For the hours of darkness, 14 UT until 05 UT, observations of thermospheric winds were made by means of a ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) operated at Kiruna Geophysical Institute (21° E, 68° N). During this period, the radar observations describe well the ebbing and flowing of regions of strong convective ion flow associated with the auroral oval. As individual geomagnetic disturbances occur, the overall ion flow pattern intensifies and moves equatorward. The zonal thermospheric wind observed by the FPI responds rapidly to surges of the local ionospheric convection, while the meridional wind response is slower and apparently to much larger-scale features of the geomagnetic input to the high latitude thermosphere. From the data base, periods of strong heating of the ionospheric ions and of the thermospheric gas can be identified, which can be compared with Joule and particle heating rates deduced from the observations of ionospheric drifts, neutral winds, electron densities and auroral emission rates. A three-dimensional, time-dependent global thermospheric model is used to distinguish local and global features of the thermospheric wind field. Meridional and zonal wind components at 312 km may be theoretically derived from the EISCAT data using an appropriate model (MSIS) for neutral temperature. The EISCAT-derived meridional wind is within about 50 m s−1 of the FPI observations throughout the period of joint observations. The EISCAT-derived zonal wind is systematically larger (by about 50%) than the FPI measurement, but the two independent measurements follow closely the same fluctuations in response to geophysical events until 03 UT, when the EISCAT solution is driven away from the FPI measurement by a sharp increase in both neutral and ion temperatures. Between 03 and 05 UT the EISCAT-derived zonal wind is 200–400 m s−1 westward. Allowance for the neutral temperature rise would reduce the EISCAT values towards the very small zonal winds shown by the FPI during this period. We describe the relatively straightforward analysis required to derive the meridional wind from the radar data and the limitations inherent in the derivation of zonal wind, using the ion energy equation, due to the lack of precise knowledge of the background neutral temperature from the EISCAT data alone. For analysis of EISCAT ion drift observations at 312 km, the ground-based FPI temperature measurements do not improve the accuracy of the analysis, since the median altitude of the FPI measurement is probably in the range 180–240 km throughout the observation period. This median altitude and the temperature gradient both fluctuate in response to local geomagnetic events, while the temperature gradient may be considerably greater than that predicted by standard atmospheric models. When the neutral temperature is well known, or when there is a large enhancement of the ion temperature, the EISCAT-derived zonal wind exceeds the FPI measurement, but the consistency with which they correlate and follow ion-drag accelerations suggests that the differences are purely due to the considerable altitude gradients which are predicted by theoretical models.  相似文献

The morphology of the lower ionosphere was examined by the riometer and ionosonde networks in Scandinavia during the campaigns MAC/SINE and MAC/EPSILON. The campaigns were carried out during 1987 when the solar activity was low. The minimum sunspol number 14 was observed in 1986. The sunspot number was already increasing during the year 1987, while the Ap-value and riometer absorption were still decreasing. During the campaign MAC/SINE the rockets were launched during quiet periods, and during the campaign MAC/EPSILON during more disturbed periods. The variations in ionospheric parameters, ionospheric absorption and foF2 are presented for the campaign periods. Some interesting events are pointed out.  相似文献

The timing and origin of reindeer domestication has been highly debated. Recent molecular analyses show several mitochondrial lineages of domestic reindeer across Eurasia suggesting different origins of Fennoscandian and Siberian domestic reindeer. In order to investigate the origin of domestic Fennoscandian reindeer, we sequenced a mitochondrial control region fragment of 68 ancient reindeer remains from archaeological sites in Finnmark, the major county for extant reindeer husbandry in Norway, spanning from ca. BC 3400 to AD 1800. The majority of the Stone and Iron Age reindeer assemblages in Finnmark are from settlements in the eastern part of the county, in the Varangerfjord area. The reindeer remains from these settlements show affiliation to the large and complex Beringian haplotype cluster, found in extant reindeer from the Kola Peninsula to north-eastern Russia. A distinct haplotype shift is observed in the late medieval period, when the typical haplotype signatures of extant domestic Fennoscandian reindeer appeared in coastal regions of both eastern and western Finnmark. These haplotypes were not found among the Stone and Iron Age wild reindeer samples of Finnmark, suggesting that this population was not ancestral to extant domestic reindeer of Fennoscandia.  相似文献

A model characterized by three regions is considered. A thin dynamo region is separated by a region of free space from a perfectly conducting earth below. Above, the dynamo region is bounded by a magnetosphere in which hydromagnetic waves in the fast and in the Alfvén mode can propagate. Two limited extensions of a previous theory that is valid for frequencies well below 1 Hz and that neglects the effect of currents flowing into the magnetosphere, are considered. First, the frequency dependence of the ionospheric current system is determined, neglecting currents flowing into the magnetosphere. Secondly, the effects of currents flowing into the magnetosphere are evaluated in the low frequency limit and the Alfvén wave fields excited in the magnetosphere in the equatorial plane are calculated.  相似文献

The relation between mission, religious conversion and identity construction is the subject of my paper. On a concrete level, I discuss the Catholic mission and conversions in Scandinavia from the middle of the 19th century to the present time. Up to the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), the Catholic Church strongly emphasised its claim to be the only true church, and as a consequence, all non-Catholic regions were regarded as missionary areas. Most of the priests and sisters working in Scandinavia were foreigners, whereas converts from Protestantism dominated the parishes. I pay special attention to the question of national and religious identity and the changing discourses of Catholic conversion, reflected in conversion narratives.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Thomson Dowden 1977) it was found that down-going whistlers exit from ducts a few hundred km above the ISIS II altitude of 1400 km, a result confirmed here. Using a set of models chosen to fit the full range of variability of density versus latitude profiles measured at ISIS II altitude we now show by ray-tracing that transmission from duct to ground and from ground to duct is most likely for duct entry/exit in the altitude range 1200–1500 km. Thus as far as whistler trapping is concerned, ducts terminate at altitudes well above 1000 km, considerably higher than has been generally thought.Several consequences of this are discussed. Direction finding measurements on the ground will underestimate the L-value of ducts by 0.2 to 0.3. Of the whistler energy exiting from a given duct and reflected from the base of the ionosphere, only a small fraction will re-enter that duct, implying that 10–20 dB of magnetosphere amplification per hop is needed to sustain multi-hop whistlers and mid-latitude hiss. On the other hand some of the reflected energy may enter adjacent ducts, thus supplying a ready explanation for mixed-path whistlers.  相似文献

The Mesolithic of Southern Scandinavia, with comprises Denmark and Southern Sweden, has been an attractive area for research for several reasons, including the good preservation conditions at many sites. Most of the work has been concentrated on the southwestern part of Southern Scandinavia, but results from more recent investigations mean that other areas can also be analyzed. New finds in the last few years have given us a greater understanding of the Late Paleolithic settlement and of its relation of the Mesolithic. For the Early Mesolithic (10,000–8000 B.P.), interest has focused primarily on the small inland bog sites in the southern part of the area, where the coast has since been submerged. Farther north, where the land has been uplifted, evidence of coastal settlement has been documented. The Late Mesolithic (8000–6000 B.P.) is known chiefly on the basis of its large coastal settlements. In this period, there is also a larger and more varied collection of finds, which makes it possible to discern clear regional differences. There has also been considerable research on the transition from Mesolithic to Neolithic.  相似文献
