自然爱好者乐园 华盛顿国家自然历史博物馆

<正>在美国东部华盛顿游览,大部分人是冲着首都的纪念标志或者政府建筑而去,比如白宫、二战纪念碑、林肯纪念堂之类的,的确颇有看头。不过对于喜欢野生动物和自然生态的我来说,华盛顿这个政治中心也有有趣的元素,     

迪拜 世界建筑师的天堂

迪拜各种稀奇古怪的前卫建筑,让因石油一夜暴富的迪拜人沉迷于一千零一夜的梦里。集体的乐观情绪、文化的贫瘠和似乎无底的钱袋使迪拜成为孕育新奇建筑和接纳奇迹的乐土。于是乎,过去10年的迪拜,就像一个强力真空泵,吸引了全世界新奇玩意儿的兜售者,从奢侈品牌、高级酒店、前卫艺术,到未来派建筑师、奇形怪状的摩天大楼和零排放太阳能建筑。对建筑师而言,赚到大笔设计费的同时,有石油大亨为自己试验各种前卫新潮乃至不切实际的建筑理念买单,无疑再好不过了。这种看似双赢的结果,便使种种疯狂的建筑设计和城市规划在迪拜这片土地上开花结果。     

Island dreaming: the contemplation of Polynesian paradise

Images of islands, especially in Polynesia, critically of Tahiti, emerged and evolved in the aftermath of island encounters with outsiders, many of whom were male. Visions of utopia dominated discourse, in different phases, as distance and smallness enhanced enchantment, yet remained centred of Tahiti, after subsequent encounters with diverse groups. Perceptions of dystopia and the ‘ignoble savage’, and the need for redemption from outside, never displaced alternative notions. Islands became incorporated into distant lands in different ways, eventually in islander diasporas, yet utopia persisted in new artistic and literary forms, supplemented by photographs, postcards and stamps, film (including travelogues), popularised anthropology and geography, and eventually tourism and television. In turn islanders replenished old images and reconstructed new ones in the shift from an imperial to a remarkably similar post-colonial politics of place and people. 2003 Elsevier Ltd. 如何才能让语文课堂充满激情,绽放出生命的光彩,进发出智慧的火花,使课堂成为学生向往的乐园？笔者认为,语文教学应添点“油”,加点“醋”,让其“五味俱全”。这样,语文课堂才会独具魅力,充满生命活力。     

The Ecology of Command: U.S. Pacific Command and the Environment of the Pacific Rim

Abstract

Environmental ethicists speak fervently about the impact of human activity on the sustainability and survivability of Earth's community. But often these discussions fail to acknowledge one human activity more powerful and with the potential for greater destruction than any other— the United States military and its "empire of bases" encircling the globe. Military operations, both peacetime missions and contingency operations, and military installations stamp a large footprint on the earth's environment. From the atmospheric nuclear tests in the Bikini Atoll to the removal of the coral reef at Diego Garcia, the environment of the Pacific Rim has been shaped by the demands of U.S. national security. This paper examines the environmental footprint of U.S. Pacific Command. Secondly, it suggests that the exigencies of U.S. military presence need to be included in discussions of environmental ethics.
