A dual coherent 50 MHz auroral radar installed at Siple Station, Antarctica, continuously monitored echo intensity and mean-Doppler velocity from 29 December 1976 until late March 1978. We describe here the experimental technique and present some statistical results including yearly averaged echooccurrence patterns and irregularity drift velocity characteristics. Our results show that:
  • 1.(1) the irregularity drifts are approximately westward (poleward electric fields) in the evening, and eastward (equatorward electric fields) in the morning following the electric field reversal in the region of the Harang discontinuity;
  • 2.(2) the Harang discontinuity under disturbed conditions (average Kp = 50) as seen by both radars is located around 2100–2300 MLT;
  • 3.(3) the relationship between the irregularity drift velocity and the actual electron drift velocity is strongly dependent on the angle between the radar beam and the earth's magnetic field, as predicted by linear theory.

We have detected wind oscillations with periods ranging from 1.4 to 20 days at 80–110 km altitude using Kyoto meteor radar observations made in 1983–1985. Among these oscillations, the quasi-2-day wave is repeatedly enhanced in summer and autumn. We found that the period of the quasi-2-day wave ranges from 52 to 55 h in summer, and becomes as short as 46 to 48 h in autumn in 1983 and 1984. The change in the wave period seems to coincide with a decrease in the amplitude of the zonal mean wind. A quasi-2-day wave event was simultaneously observed in January 1984 at Kyoto (35° N, 136°E) and Adelaide (35° S, 138° E), which are located at conjugate points relative to the geographic equator. Amplitudes of the meridional component at Adelaide are approximately four times larger than those observed at Kyoto. Comparison observations clearly show that the meridional component is in phase and the zonal component is out of phase, respectively, implying antisymmetry of the quasi-2-day wave between the northern and southern hemispheres. Relative phase progressions with height are similar between the Kyoto and Adelaide results for both meridional and zonal components, and indicate the presence of an upward energy propagating wave with a vertical wavelength of about 100 km.  相似文献

This paper reports the first successful gyro line experiment with the EISCAT VHF (224 MHz) radar. The incoherent scatter gyro line (also known as ‘resonance line’ and ‘whistler line’ in the literature) corresponds to the electrostatic wave mode ω ≈ Ω cos α known to be present in a weakly magnetized plasma (Ω is the electron gyro frequency and α is the angle between the scattering wave vector and the magnetic field). The line is very weak, but has the great advantage from an observational point of view that its position in the scattered spectrum is only marginally dependent on the electron density and temperature. This means that filter offsets can be easily predicted and that a long pulse and long integration times can be used in the experiment. Measurements were made at angles of 55 and 69° with the geomagnetic field where the gyro line frequencies are approximately 800 and 500 kHz, respectively. The line was seen in the altitude region 100–220 km, being most intense at 160–170 km. The strong dependence of the gyro line on the magnetic field may be used to study variations in the field. Other interesting aspects of the line to be investigated in future experiments are the effects of suprathermal particles, the possible effects of stimulated scattering, and the heating effects in an ionospheric modification experiment.  相似文献

During many magnetospheric substorms, the auroral oval near midnight is observed to expand poleward in association with strong negative perturbations measured by local ground magnetometers. We show Sondrestrom and EISCAT incoherent scatter radar measurements during three such events. In each of the events, enhanced ionization produced by the precipitation moved northward by several degrees of latitude within 10–20 min. The electric fields measured during the three events were significantly different. In one event the electric field was southward everywhere within the precipitation region. In the other two events a reversal in the meridional component of the field was observed. In one case the reversal occurred within the precipitation region, while in the other case the reversal was at the poleward boundary of the precipitation. The westward electrojet that produces the negative H-perturbation in the ground magnetic field has Hall and Pedersen components to varying degrees. In one case the Hall component was eastward and the Pedersen component was westward, but the net magnetic H-deflection on the ground was negative. Simultaneous EISCAT measurements made near the dawn meridian during one of the events show that the polar cap boundary moved northward at the same time as the aurora expanded northward at Sondrestrom. Most of the differences in the electrodynamic configuration in the three events can be accounted for in terms of the location at which the measurements were made relative to the center of the auroral bulge.  相似文献

We have observed Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) in the night-time D- and E-regions using a 2.66 MHz imaging Doppler interferometer radar. TIDs were observed in two distinct ways. In the first, the TID was manifested as discrete traveling surges, with average spacings of 54 min. The D-region surges were so well defined that they could be tracked as they passed close to overhead by using the phase differences across the antenna arrays. A velocity of 135 m s−1 to the south was measured, giving a horizontal wavelength of 440 km typical of medium scale TIDs. The direction of phase travel relative to the horizontal was −6° (i.e. downwards). These observations were made during a night of extraordinary OH infrared mesopause structure activity made visible by the presence of a total lunar eclipse. In the second type of TID observation, we show the Doppler interferometer analysis of ripples on the under surface of sporadic-E layers taken on two nights of significant OH infrared and OI 5577 Å wave activity. The TIDs were observed to propagate at speeds of 120–300 m s−1, with directions predominately toward the southwest, again typical of medium scale TIDs. These results show definite wave effects on MF radar returns and thus suggest that the measurement of mesospheric bulk winds with MF radars should be approached with some caution. Comparison of the TID characteristics with the OH structure characteristics show that the TIDs travel faster than the OH structures, have longer apparent horizontal wavelengths and generally travel in the opposite direction.  相似文献

First VHF radar measurements with height resolution of 300 m and angular resolution of 1.7° were carried out in low latitudes at the Arecibo Observatory, Puerto Rico. A short outline is given of the experimental set-up which consisted of a 160W average power radar-transceiver and a self-contained digital radar control and data acquisition unit. The new VHF feed system of the Arecibo dish is described shortly. Reliable radar echoes were detected from the troposphere, lower stratosphere and from some heights in the mesosphere, indicating that the described VHF radar is capable of proper investigations of dynamical processes in the low latitude middle atmosphere. The angular dependence of aspect sensitive tropospheric and stratospheric turbulence structures was measured to be 1.5–2.5 dB degree−1. Echoes from the mesosphere indicate a patchy structure of turbulence. The analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio shows considerably high reflectivity in the upper troposphere, which can be caused by high-reaching tropical cumulus convection. Wind profiles measured with the VHF radar between 7.5 and 19.5 km with a height resolution of 300m are very similar to radiosonde wind profiles. Mesospheric VHF radar winds are roughly consistent in amplitude with tidal winds.  相似文献

Measurements of the pseudo 2-day wave have been made at many of the mesosphere-lower-thermosphere radars. Comparisons are made here between measurements taken at Saskatoon MF radar (52°N, 107°W) and two meteor radars, one at Christmas Island (2°N, 157°W) and the other at Durham (43°N, 71°W). Although results averaged for 10 days or longer agree with previous measurements (i.e. larger amplitudes and more phase stability in late summer), when the wave is analyzed over 2–4 days as a 48 h component, interesting phase properties emerge and the wave is seen over more of the year. The wave is amplitude and phase modulated, making the interpretation of results obtained over long time frames (20 days or more) difficult. There is strong evidence of solar influence on the 2-day wave.  相似文献

Observations with the Poker Flat, Alaska, MST radar during and after solar proton events in 1982 and 1984 suggest that winds in the altitude range of ~ 80–90 km were altered as a consequence of the influx of energetic charged particles and large electric fields at high latitudes. The atmospheric changes accompanying these events appear to result in a reduction of the semidiurnal tide and an enhancement in the diurnal tide. It is suggested that these changes could result from the alteration of the local tidal heating distribution produced by the particle precipitation, either through changes in the local ozone distribution or as a result of mesospheric Joule heating.  相似文献

VHF radar measurements of velocities and echo power in the summer polar mesosphere have been analysed using maximum entropy, bispectral and cross-spectral methods in order to study wave-wave interactions. The results show nonlinear interactions of second and even third order between the diurnal and semidiurnal tides and planetary waves with periods of 2 and 3 days in the velocity field. Similar analyses of time series of echo power suggest corresponding variations of the temperature field.  相似文献

The pulse-to-pulse beam steerability of the M U radar of Kyoto University enables us to observe multiple beam positions simultaneously. Based on 560 h of this type of data, we present two typical patterns of mid-latitude ionospheric disturbances and their horizontal traveling characteristics. Wavy structures have not been found in large-scale disturbances. Isolated disturbances travel primarily southward (equatorward) in disturbed conditions, while no preferred direction is observed in quiet conditions.  相似文献

Night-time equatorial F-region plasma drifts are deduced from VHF backscatter radar observations of F-region irregularities. The zonal drifts reveal large vertical shears. It is found that the irregularity polarization electric field (though small compared to the ambient field) is significant in affecting the observed zonal drifts.  相似文献

Direct comparisons have been made of the prevailing and tidal wind fields observed in the 80–100 km height region using data obtained with a meteor radar at Kyoto (35°N, 136°E) and a partial reflection spaced antenna system at Adelaide (35°S, 138°E). Data taken with a partial reflection system at Townsville (19°S, 147°E) has also been included so that the latitudinal variations of the tidal structures could be taken into account. The comparisons extend over periods of up to one month duration centered on the equinoxes of 1979 and the January solstice of 1980. They show that there are often significant differences in the tidal amplitudes and phases observed at Kyoto and Adelaide, despite their near geographic conjugacy, probably indicating the presence of antisymmetrical tidal modes. The diurnal tide is appreciably stronger at Adelaide on the average, than at Kyoto, whereas the semi-diurnal amplitudes are on the average greater at Kyoto.  相似文献

IPS Radio and Space Services (IPS) commissioned a new radiospectrograph in May 1992. Located at Culgoora, near Narrabri, in northwest NSW, it replaces a radiospectrograph constructed by the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics in 1966. In conducting this upgrade, IPS has made use of commercially available hardware to replace all of the original instrument except its antennae. An important aspect of the new instrument is the acquisition of data in digital form. This, together with software written by IPS staff, permits a variety of data analysis techniques that were not previously possible.This paper demonstrates the capabilities of the new instrument by presenting some of the radiospectrograms obtained during the past twelve months. Each is accompanied by a short discussion of its salient features. Some of the advanced functions of the digital display software, such as automated shock speed estimation, are also outlined.  相似文献

We describe some of the highlights of the incoherent scatter observations made at Jicamarca in the 1960s. Some of the observations were then and are still now unique and worthy of further study. Of particular note are (1) a long series of electron density measurements extending to altitudes as high as 10,000 km on a few occasions, (2) density and temperature observations during a total solar eclipse, (3) temperature and composition measurements extending past the O+-H+ transition region, and (4) observations of the ion gyro resonance effect for protons.  相似文献

Measurements of winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere were carried out during the main phase of the MAP/WINE project in January and February 1984 with the EISCAT UHF incoherent scatter radar near Tromsö, Norway, and with meteorological rockets launched from the Andøya Rocket Range, Norway. The radar measurements yield wind profiles between the altitudes of about 80 km and 105 km and the rockets between about 60 km and 90 km. Results from both techniques are combined to yield mean profiles which are particularly evaluated in terms of tidal variations. It is found that the semidiurnal tide constitutes an essential wind contribution between 85 km and 105 km. Whereas the tidal amplitudes are below 5 m s−1 at about 80 km, they increase to 20–30 m s−1 at 100 km. The average vertical wavelength of 35 km points to the S42 mode, but coupling and superposition of different modes cannot be excluded.  相似文献
