Desiring structures: exhibiting the dendritic form

Abstract

From 30 April to 4 September 2005, the Museum of Design in Zurich staged the exhibition 'Simply complex' ('einfach Komplex'), an exploration of the dendritic form. The dendritic form is a recurrent and often instructive one in the sciences, which can be observed in many contexts and at different scales, from the delta of liquid methane revealed by the Huygens probe on the surface of Saturn's moon Titan in 2005, to micrographs of neurons in the human brain. It also recurs in the form of the persuasive diagrams which art historians, linguists and philosophers have long used to bring forth a sense of organic unity, order and development from their data. 'Simply complex' displayed case studies of these visual strategies in the sciences, while also showcasing some specially commissioned critical and aesthetic interventions by artists on the theme of the branching form. Here I reflect on the planning process for the exhibition, and present for the first time in English my essay from the accompanying book.     

Picturing Feminism,Selling Liberalism: The Case of the Disappearing Holbein

Responding to recent scholarly and activist discussions of the public museum as a site of anti-feminism, this article examines the historical development of ‘feminist museology’ in Britain. Focusing on the mystery and controversies surrounding an anonymous woman’s gift of Hans Holbein’s Christina of Denmark to the National Gallery in 1909, this study investigates the dynamic of art, gender, and citizenship during the prewar Liberal crisis. The Holbein debates marked an important shift in the institutional status of feminism and the gendered parameters of cultural property, and offer a new perspective on our own practices of heritage and patrimony.

Islam and the rural landscape: discourses of absence in west Wales

This paper explores the relationship between the presence and absence of Islamic communities in western Wales. Commencing with a discussion of the literatures on the geographies of Islam and rural exclusion, I argue that both sets have neglected research on rural religious communities. Discussion is centred upon the visual absence of Islam in the area, as local mosques are predominantly housed in contingent or non-purpose-built buildings. Using interview data, I examine the implications of these absences for local Muslims' experiences of rural landscapes, and discuss the juxtaposition between the visual absence of cultural indicators of Islam and the contingent strategies these communities employ to meet their religious needs. Adopting Nancy Fraser's concept of a subaltern counterpublic, I argue that the contingent presence in the landscape brings organisational possibilities. However, the lack of visibility of these counterpublics also brings challenges, fragmenting the community and creating difficulties for individuals to access particular services. This subterranean ontology has implications not only for liberal ideas of publicity and privacy, but also for inclusive citizenship in an era when debates about multiculturalism centre on accommodating religious needs.
