This paper focuses on the investigators of rural society in the Republican period, specifically research made through fieldwork on the Gowned Brothers (or,Paoge) in 1940s Sichuan. It takes up one such investigator,Shen Baoyuan—a student at Yenching University;her youthful work never became published or recognized. The present study reveals how the pioneers of Chinese sociology and anthropology, who called themselves "rural activists," tried to understand rural China. It argues that the developments in those fields in China of the 1920s and 1940s made it possible for us today to have a better understanding of the contemporary rural problems. The investigators played an important role in the Rural Construction and Rural Education Movements in Republican China. They show us how Western sociology and anthropology were localized in order to answer "Chinese questions" and to solve "Chinese problems." As source material, these investigations have given us rich records, which in turn have become precious sources and historical memories of rural China's past.  相似文献

In the 1939 New County Reforms, the Nationalist government made the baojia system the lowest level of self-government in the country. This decision was the result of more than ten years of discussion among Nationalist administrators and writers who were searching for a tutelary system to train the people in their political rights in preparation for constitutional rule. In the 1920s and 1930s, Nationalist writers claimed to be following Sun Zhongshan's (Sun Yat-sen) philosophy by reinventing the baojia as a form of democracy. Harkening back to a reimagined national past, they "discovered" that the imperial baojia was not a system of local control, but a traditional model of bureaucratically-designed local self-government. Nationalist writers dovetailed this new baojia with Sun Zhongshan's philosophy in order to rationalize its position as the foundation of the Three Principles of the People State. Once philosophically legitimized, Nationalist writers endorsed the baojia as a top-down bureaucratic system that would transform the political, social, and economic life of the country; it would become the core political unit of their state-making and nation-building projects. In so doing, the baojia came to represent the Nationalists' deeply-held belief in the power of human agency to create state institutions capable of entirely remaking society and transforming the nation.  相似文献

The images Atra Leading an Elephant and A Mongolian Riding a Tiger are paintingsloved by Tibetans. In old Tibet, the two images were seen most on both sides of the house gate of senior monks, or on both walls of the corridors to the shrines in some monasteries. They were less often found in secular buildings and almost never in the yards of common people. Therefore, we can infer that except for the injunction to avoid evil and make money, the images also stand for power and eminence.  相似文献

The dietary structure and customs of the Tibetans1 include both simple and complex elements. The transition from a diet composed mainly of tsampa and butter tea to the integration of alien and industrialized foodstuffs into the Tibetan dietary culture reflects,in a way,the processes of adaptation, integration and vicissitude of the Tibetan rural community during modernization. This article attempts to discuss the relationship between the traditional culture and modernization in Tibetan rural communities during the process of cultural interaction and modernization by studying the dietary structure and customs of Tibetan farmers in Nyang-re Township located in the north outskirts of Lhasa,Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).  相似文献

A great deal of research on the Korean War has focused on the military, politics, economy and international affairs, and far less on the religious, particularly the Buddhist, perspective. The Korean War exerted a tremendous impact on institutional Buddhism, and consequently Buddhists were heavily involved. This paper examines the history of Chinese Buddhist participation in the "Resisting America and Assisting Korea Campaign" from Buddhist perspectives such as political propaganda, material donations especially the donation of the "Chinese Buddhist Airplane," and the enlistment of young monks into the People's Volunteer Army (the PVA). The paper will then look into social and political factors involved in Buddhist leaders' reinterpretation of Buddhist doctrines to justify participation in the campaign, as a response to the surge of patriotism in Chinese society. This kind of investigation may shed light on the relationship between institutional Buddhism and politics in the new socialist society of China after 1949.  相似文献

Located on Dongshan Island, off the coast of Fujian province,is a typical rural village called Tongbo. On May 10,1950,147 men were abducted by the KMT army on its way to Taiwan.Since a majority of the men were already married, overnight, their wives became "widows," and most would remain so for the rest of their lives.Consequently,Tongbo village became more widely known as Widow Village. The first objective of this paper is to document the tragic experiences of men and women in Tongbo village, focusing on these forced separations in 1950,the possibility of reunion after 1987,and the struggle to cope with the difficulties in between. The second objective of this paper is to argue that while heartbreaking, the experiences of this village are not extraordinary in the context of the Chinese Civil War.What made the men and women in Tongbo extraordinary is not their collective suffering, but how these villagers suffered less, not more, than in many other places, because of the actions of three key figures.  相似文献

正Intertwined Institutions:Slavery as an Example While Global History and Entangled History are nowadays very much focused on modern times, there is a central area in which ancient history has set the pace for research since the 18th century:slavery.Slavery was common in many parts of the world up to the 19th century,it connected regions that were far apart, and it had drastic repercussions on both the"delivering"and the"receiving"areas. The  相似文献

<正>People often say the best buildings in the Tibet Autonomous Region are school buildings. This is,in fact, true. The most beautiful view in schools is the smiling faces of children, and the most beautiful people are those school teachers who persist on living in a rural community to devote themselves to rural education.  相似文献

The labels “Hellenes” and “Hellas” are often considered to be collective names for the Greeks and have a close connection with the term “Panhellenes.” This article studies the process of naming the Greeks in the Archaic period and the relationship between these collective names and the notion of Panhellenism. By a literary and etymological examination of the relevant sources, it suggests that the designation “Hellenes” probably did not evolve from that of “Panhellenes” and that the terms “Hellenes” and “Hellas,” but not “Panhellenes,” probably have generic significance in the sixth century. Furthermore, with the Olympic Games and the Hellenion, a Greek sanctuary in Naucratis, as two study cases, the article shows the complexity of the development of Greek identification. On the one hand, collective names like “Hellenes” and “Hellas” have a centripetal force on trans-regional occasions, and on the other, those events also feature competition, privilege and express civic identities of both individual and community, which seems to be divisive.  相似文献

The Namseling Manor rests on a site by a river, south of Samye Monastery and within the boundary of Namseling Village, County of Chanang in Lhoka Prefecture. The Manor was built during the Phagdrup regime. The Namseling Manor is a model of Tibetan feudal serfdom society. As an early, large-scalemanor house built in a time when Tibetan society lived under a serf-based regime, Namseling has survived hundreds of years as a witness to the formation and development of a feudal manor. After democratic reform in Tibet, the Namseling Manor stood deserted for more than half a century. The present manor, no longer what it once was, has embraced many life stories, including that of Shezang. The now elderly Shezang was born in Nagqu in 1927. Both his parents were servants in the nobleman's household. At 14 he was taken to Lhasa to work as a babysitter. The next year his parents passed away one by one. A fellow villager told him the news when he returned to Namseling at 26. Shezang has a younger sisterbut they were separated in Nagqu when both were still young. They never met again.  相似文献

The ventilation rate of a museum showcase is an important indicator for evaluating its sealing performance. In order to evaluate the ventilation rate of a showcase accurately, objectively and scientifically, some details of the detection and evaluation methods were comprehensively studied on the basis of GB/T 36110—2018. The results show that in order to achieve a better fitting effect, the carbon dioxide concentration outside a showcase should be fixed—a fixed concentration between 300 X 10 and 600 X 10 (volume fraction) had little influence on the fitting results. The average ventilation rate of the showcase at each moment was obtained by the numerical calculation method. When the detection time was short, values were unstable and fluctuated greatly; after stabilization, they were close to the fitted ventilation rates. The initial carbon dioxide concentration had a great influence on the fitting results of ventilation rate. The initial concentration of carbon dioxide gas in a showcase should be basically fixed between 20 000 X 10" and 25 000 X 10 ~ (volume fraction) during detection, so that the testing results were comparable. The carbon dioxide mixture in the airtight showcase is relatively uniform, and no obvious dip occurred. The location of detection equipment has little influence on the fitting results of ventilation rate. If the fitted R reaches 0. 9, the results are considered valid, due to various errors in the detection process. © 2023, Sciences of Conservation and Archaeology. All Rights Reserved.  相似文献

In some rural areas, toilets were little more than makeshift shelters surrounded by shabby walls. These dry toilets are of poor sanitary standards, and harmful to the environment. In 2015,while visiting Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture,Xi Jinping,General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said,"clean toilets for rural residents are important for the building of a new countryside. We should continue to upgrade the country’s toilets as part of a'toilet revolution'aimed at developing domestic tourism and improving people’s life quality."To realize Xi’s vision,a"toilet revolution"was started in Tibet. For Tibet’s frigid, high altitude, and oxygen-poor environment, the technology of water-free and foamenveloped toilets and microbial biodegradation were selected, and 5 new facilities were built in scenic areas like Namtso and Yardrok Yutso. The facilities were all put into operation and were well received by the public.  相似文献

At present, Tibetan farmers and herdsmen can increase their incomes through non- agricultural industries. The economic development in the cities and towns offers a lot of opportunities for rural migrant workers in Tibet. Working in towns has become an importantmeans for the Tibetan rural labor force to boost their incomes. With the advantages of possessing many trades, low employment requirement and high flexibility, in some larger Tibetan cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, tertiary industry has accepted more and more people from the countryside and thus has become the major channel to employment for rural migrant workers. Thereby the catering industry has become the first area to be chosen by many Tibetan rural workers who go to town for the first time.  相似文献

This article explores the of certain elite women during late little-known public philanthropic activities Qing China. By examining contemporary newspapers, it traces the new development of women's philanthropic engagement and further analyzes two cases, one on disaster relief and the other on women's education, to illustrate the issues, controversies and achievements that went along with women's philanthropy. It demonstrates how philanthropy, a traditionally-sanctioned field for women's activism, legitimatized women to move out of domestic seclusion and reposition themselves in the public sphere in a crucial transitional era when for "good women" to appear in public was something hotly debated, and how through philanthropic opportunities some were able to engage with political affairs. The broad social impact of their initiatives suggests the continued importance of traditional elite women during China's transition to the modern era; it challenges some of our previous notions, which often unthinkingly accepted the verdict of "New Women" that those who did not embrace their path to modernity were parasitic, unproductive, and backward. By looking carefully at philanthropy, the article reveals fascinating issues and rich details of women's public activities that previous historical narratives have often overlooked. It helps to understand how reconfigured traditions became essential components of modernity in the development of modern Chinese gender roles. It also adds a gender perspective to the burgeoning historiography on Chinese philanthropy.  相似文献

Tibetan opera is an ethnic and unique theatrical genre in the system of Chinese operas. All the ethnic operas in China are directly or indirectly akin to Han operas, so is Tibetan opera. As a member of the big family, Tibetan opera necessarily absorbs some artistic nutrition from other Chinese operas. As a result, it acquires the common style and some common formal characteristics of Chinese national operas as a whole. The generality just lies on the level of cultural genre and overall flavor, however. As for the entity of the theatrical art itself, Tibetan opera is basically and independently derived from Tibetan culture and art except for some indirect influences from Han operas. During Emperor Qiaulong's reign, some leaders of the Qing troops stationed in Tibet used to organize soldiers from Shaanxi and Gansu to perform Shaanxi opera in the army In the period of the Republic of China, the office of Commission on Mongolian and Tibetan affairs in Lhasa promoted opera performance to celebrate victory in the Anti-Japanese War, New Year's celebrations,  相似文献
