A study has been made of data taken with EISCAT using the Common Program CP-3-C (F-region meridian scan) which shows that regions of enhanced ion temperature (in excess of 3000K at all three EISCAT stations) are found on most days when Kp exceeds 2 or 3, usually accompanied by ion drift velocities of more than 1 km s−1. These periods are often accompanied by anisotropy of the ion temperature and abnormally low apparent electron temperature, consistent with the presence of a non-Maxwellian ion velocity distribution such as would result from large but not exceptional ion drifts. Data for a selected period have been fitted using theoretical ion velocity distributions based on the relaxation collision model and assuming that the ion composition is 100% O+. The results confirm the presence of non-Maxwellian distributions, but a detailed comparison with theory reveals some discrepancies, indicating that the analysis may need to be extended to include effects due to, for example, molecular ions and instabilities.  相似文献

The fractal distribution is the best statistical model for the size-frequency distributions that result from some lithic reduction processes. Fractals are a large class of complex, self-similar sets that can be described using power-law relations. Fractal statistical distributions are characterized by an exponent, D, called the fractal dimension. I show how to determine whether the size-frequency distribution of a sample of debitage is fractal by plotting the power-law relation on a log-log graph. I also show how to estimate the fractal dimension for any particular distribution. Using debitage size data from experimental replications of lithic tools, I demonstrate a fundamental relationship between the fractal dimension and stage of reduction. I also present archaeological case studies that illustrate the simplicity and utility of the method.  相似文献

Multi-isotope fingerprints in the bioapatite of archaeological skeletons are mostly superior over single isotope analyses for provenance studies. Gaussian mixture model (GMM) clustering is a novel tool for a similarity search among multidimensional data sets and at the same time permits the evaluation of the structural importance of particular isotopic ratios in the data set. We applied three GMM clustering experiments on multi-isotope fingerprints—stable strontium (Sr), lead (Pb) and oxygen (O) isotopic ratios—established in 217 archaeological animal bones excavated along a specific transect across the European Alps. This reference region had been in use since prehistoric times by humans who crossed the Alps from north to south, and vice versa. The resulting clusters permit a spatial assignment of the specimens with a very high probability, in particular with regard to the geological complexity of the region. A combination of Sr with Pb stable isotopes led to an optimal differentiation between the southern and northern Alpine forelands that cannot be distinguished from each other by 87Sr/86Sr ratios alone, while the contribution of δ18O is not particularly high. The isotopic mapping and subsequent cluster analysis is suitable for the analysis of archaeological human finds and the reconstruction of the direction of transalpine mobility and trade.  相似文献

The principled statistical application of Gaussian random field models used in geostatistics has historically been limited to data sets of a small size. This limitation is imposed by the requirement to store and invert the covariance matrix of all the samples to obtain a predictive distribution at unsampled locations, or to use likelihood-based covariance estimation. Various ad hoc approaches to solve this problem have been adopted, such as selecting a neighborhood region and/or a small number of observations to use in the kriging process, but these have no sound theoretical basis and it is unclear what information is being lost. In this article, we present a Bayesian method for estimating the posterior mean and covariance structures of a Gaussian random field using a sequential estimation algorithm. By imposing sparsity in a well-defined framework, the algorithm retains a subset of " basis vectors " that best represent the " true " posterior Gaussian random field model in the relative entropy sense. This allows a principled treatment of Gaussian random field models on very large data sets. The method is particularly appropriate when the Gaussian random field model is regarded as a latent variable model, which may be nonlinearly related to the observations. We show the application of the sequential, sparse Bayesian estimation in Gaussian random field models and discuss its merits and drawbacks.  相似文献

During relative drifts between the ions and the neutrals perpendicular to the geomagnetic field, the ion temperature in the auroral F-region becomes anisotropic with a higher temperature perpendicular than parallel to the magnetic field (T >T). It has been shown that for a gyrotropic ion velocity distribution the ion temperatures T and T can be expressed as a function of the neutral temperature and of the squared normalized relative ion-neutral drift, with parameters β and β describing the anisotropy and the collision process.In this paper, five increases of the F-layer ion temperature and ion drift velocity, found in EISCAT-CP1F data, were analyzed to obtain information about the anisotropy and the collision process. In the CP1F experiment, the angles between the magnetic field line ending in Tromsø and the antenna directions remain small, and the ion drift velocities of the investigated events in general were below 1500 m/s. Thus the ion velocity distributions were approximated by a bi-Maxwellian, and NO+ was assumed to remain a minor constituent at the F-layer maximum. For a quantitative analysis, generalized theoretical β-values for a bi-Maxwellian ion velocity distribution drifting through a mixture of different neutral components and for arbitrary observation directions were calculated. With these expressions it was possible to compare the drift dependence of the measured ion temperature for every antenna position directly with the theory. A statistical analysis of the heating events showed a good correlation between the ion temperatures of Tromsø, Kiruna and Sodankylä and the squared normalized ion drift, and values βT, βK, βS could be calculated by linear regression. The fitted curves corresponded well with theoretical curves for a bi-Maxwellian velocity distribution of O+ ions drifting through a neutral atmosphere consisting of O and N2.  相似文献

The OSL, post-IR OSL and pulsed post-IR OSL applied to polymineral grains and calculated by fitting to the data the contributions from fast, medium and slow components revealed that the polymineral samples under study are dominated by the medium component. An increase in D e ’s with increasing integration intervals was observed, which is considered as an indication of increasing medium and decayed fast component; and the equivalent doses obtained using different components or minerals reflect also the shape of the dose distributions. The identified fast component in polymineral sample has photoionization cross section of 1.2±0.02 × 10?17 cm2. The present study shows the usefulness of the application of different luminescence techniques combined with fitting procedures as a check which should be adopted in dating protocols. Based on luminescence ages obtained on poly-mineral grains from prehistoric pottery samples from the Boroo settlement, Mongolia, which are in agreement with independent age control by 14C on charcoal material, it is argued that the manufacturing of Xiongnu — pottery at this site lasted until ca. 130±75 AD.  相似文献

This paper examines the feasibility of deriving a climatology of the diurnal variations of the wind in the 85–120 km region from the tidal components of temperature, density, and composition contained in the new COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere, CIRA-1986, Part I: Thermosphere Models [(1988), Adv. Space Res.8, 9]. To derive the wind field, we used the zonal and meridional momentum equations which have been modified from the characteristic scales of the tidal components observed in the 85–120 km region. The CIRA temperature and density model was used to derive the eastward (westerly) and northward (southerly) pressure gradient forces which serve as the forcing functions in the coupled momentum equations. Ground-based wind data from the Mesosphere-Lower Thermosphere (MLT) radar network is used as an independent data set to check the accuracy of the derived tidal wind model. At midlatitudes, the model reproduces some of the general features observed in the radar tidal data, such as the dominant semidiurnal tide with increasing amplitude with height and clockwise (counterclockwise) rotation of the velocity vector observed in the northern (southern) hemisphere. The model overestimates the semidiurnal amplitudes observed by radar by 50–75% during most seasons with the best agreement found during the equinoctial months. The model exhibits little phase variation with height or season, whereas the radar data exhibit a downward phase progression during most seasons (other than summer) characteristic of upward propagating tidal waves, and large seasonal phase variations associated with seasonal changes in vertical wavelengths. The diurnal tidal amplitudes, which are generally 5–20 m s−1 at mid-latitude radar stations and are dominant over the semidiurnal amplitudes at lower latitudes, are less than 5 m s−1 at all latitudes in the model.  相似文献

Ionospheric data from three incoherent scatter stations over the height range 225–450 km were studied for all daylight hours over a wide range of solar conditions. The relationship between electron temperature Te, electron density Nand solar flux at 10.7 cm wavelength S10.7 was expressed as Te = AB·(N−5 × 1011) + C·(S10.7−750), where N is in units of m−3 and S10.7 in kJy.This provided a very satisfactory expression for all data taken at Malvern and St. Santin between 0800 and 1600 LT. For data taken at Arecibo, however, the linearity broke down at low electron densities. The data from all three stations were therefore divided into two sets according to electron density and reexamined.ForN < 5 × 1011 m−3 B increased steadily with height and decreased steadily with latitude.For N > 5 × 1011 m−3 B did not appear to vary with height, with season or with latitude. C was approximately constant for all sets of data.The different mechanisms involved in the heat balance of the electron population are discussed and a qualitative explanation for the relationship is proposed.  相似文献

Questions of mobility, settlement pattern, and their relation to economic organization and resource use are central to ongoing work in central-western Argentina. Here we analyze geographic patterns in the distribution of 178 human bone carbonate δ18O samples, 46 human tooth enamel carbonate δ18O samples, and 48 water δ18O samples from throughout the Andean Cordillera and Monte Desert and evaluate their implications for prehistoric mobility and economy. We confirm and refine previous generalizations regarding a highland/lowland dichotomy in water δ18O values and show that the range of human carbonate δ18O values generally reflect available water sources. While there is little within-lifetime change in patterns of water use, we show that most individuals have stable isotope signatures consistent with water use from multiple areas or areas other than where they were ultimately interred. These data indicate high levels of residential mobility, and we conclude by discussing their implications for our understanding of regional prehistory.  相似文献

A model of the O+ and H+ distributions in the plasmasphere and high-latitude ionosphere is described and first results are presented. The O+ and H+ continuity and momentum equations are solved from the F-region to the equatorial plane in the inner plasmasphere, and to an altitude of 1400 km in the outer plasmasphere and high-latitude ionosphere. Account is taken of high-latitude convection, departure from corotation inside the plasmasphere, and neutral air winds. The neutral air winds are consistent with the assumed convection pattern. For equinox and magnetically quiet conditions the calculations show that a mid-latitude trough in F-layer electron concentration is present from 1600 to 0600 LT and the trough may occur either inside or outside the plasmasphere. The movement of the trough in this period is from higher to lower latitudes and is in qualitative agreement with AE-C and ESRO-4 data. A light-ion trough feature is apparent in the H+ distribution in the topside ionosphere at all local times. During the day the upward H+ flow increases with latitude to produce the light-ion trough. At night the H+ trough may be directly produced by the occurrence of the mid-latitude O+ trough. The relationships between the position of the plasmapause and the trough are discussed. Also discussed are the influence of particle ionization in the auroral zone and the effect of the neutral air wind.  相似文献

A three-dimensional, time-dependent, MHD model of solar-disturbance-caused storms (Wu, 1993; Wu et al., 1996a) is used to predict the turning direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) at Earth. More explicitly, we examine the polarity of Bz caused by solar disturbances on the Sun. Three manifestations of solar disturbances, as studied by previous workers, are examined. Firstly, twenty-nine kilometric Type II events, associated (Cane, 1985) with geomagnetic storms, are studied within the context of our three-dimensional model. Then, an additional eleven long-duration X-ray events (LDEs) with radio fluxes greater than 100 solar flux units were examined; these events were not associated with interplanetary Type II events but were also associated (Cane, 1985) with geomagnetic storms. Finally, in situ interplanetary phenomena that caused ten large (Dst < −100 nT, the intensification of the storm) geomagnetic storm episodes (Tsurutani et al., 1988) near solar maximum are also studied via the Bz predictions of our 3D MHD model. The accuracy of these Bz turning-direction-predictions is found to be as follows: (1) for the kilometric Type II events, the model's prediction was successful for 26 of the 29 events studied; (2) 10/11 for the LDE events; and (3) 7/9 for the major geomagnetic storm events. The overall prediction accuracy of these three independent data sets is 43/49. Thus, consideration of these three independent data sets strongly suggests that the recipe proposed by the basic 3D MHD model may be valid for a zero-th order prediction scheme.  相似文献

The site of Vértesszöllös has yielded a pebble-tool industry, a fragment of the cranium of a primitive form of Homo sapiens, and a vertebrate fauna indicative of the Biharian faunal stage. We have analyzed the travertines under- and overlying the hominid-bearing marl. All the samples are significantly contaminated with detritus, so that calculated U-series disequilibrium ages provide upper limits to the true age. The individual samples, when corrected for a possible initial 230Th/232Th ratio of 1·5, give an average age of 211 ± 13 Ky. By fitting the data to a model consisting of a mixture of authigenic and detrital components, we obtain an age of 162 ?62+73 Ky. The travertines appear to have been deposited over a span of about 40,000 years centred at about 185 ± 25 Ky bp. This places their deposition near the beginning of isotope stage 6, much younger than has been generally believed.  相似文献

To evaluate coastal settlement and land use strategies among maritime hunter-gatherers, we analyzed oxygen isotope (δ18O) data from 131 marine carbonate samples from 21 California mussel (Mytilus californianus) shells obtained from a large ~8,200-year-old shell midden (CA-SRI-666) on California’s Santa Rosa Island. Seasonal distributions of the isotopic data were assigned using a paleo-sea surface temperature model created by comparing modern sea surface temperatures (SST) to a fully profiled ~8,200-year-old shell. For 20 additional shells, we used two sampling strategies to compare season-of-harvest inferences and explore whether the Early Holocene site occupants were sedentary. Estimated season-of-harvest differed by 35 % between the two sampling methods, corroborating recent isotope analysis of an 8,800-year-old shell midden on San Miguel Island. Shellfish appear to have been collected year-round at CA-SRI-666 from intertidal or subtidal water temperatures similar to modern SST in the vicinity of eastern Santa Rosa Island. The isotope results are consistent with other evidence from CA-SRI-666 that suggest that the site served as a residential base for relatively sedentary maritime people.  相似文献

The magnetic field expressions from the current ribbon and thick current versions of the continuous distribution of current density model and their merits have been presented. For the first time both the latitudinal and vertical parameters of the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) have been derived from the same set of data. The local noon and daytime means of certain key parameters of the EEJ are shown to be in good agreement with those from other sources. Selected local noon means include: peak current density jo, 10.58 ± 0.34 A/km2; peak current intensity jo, 224 ± 9 A/km; total eastward current I+, 74 ± 5 kA ; EEJ current focal distance w, 300 ± 5 km ; half thickness at half of peak current density p, 7.0 ± 0.1 km; peak westward current location xm, 5.13 ± 0.08° dip latitude; and EEJ latitudinal extent L1, 12 ± 1° dip latitude. The problem of model calculated landmark distances of EEJ being consistently shorter than observations, encountered by Onwumechiliet al. [J. geomagn. Geoelecl. 41, 443 (1989)] has been solved.  相似文献

Observations of auroral radio absorption made in Finland over the years 1972–1983 have been compiled for use in absorption predictions. The data are presented as values of Q(1), the probability of at least 1 dB absorption being recorded by a 30 MHz riometer, and the results are compared with the predictions of an existing model regarding the latitudinal variation, the influence of solar and magnetic activity indices, and the pattern of daily variation. New formulae for basing absorption predictions on the Ap index are proposed.  相似文献

The δ13C values for un-defatted bone gelatin of individual members of wild populations of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) and field vole (Microtus townsendii) have been measured to determine the variability within each population. Means and standard deviations for the mule deer sample (N=55) and vole sample (N=22) are −20·6±0·5‰ and −23·2±0·6‰, respectively. The distributions of δ13C values for each of these populations are normal and we observed no correlation in δ13C values with age or sex.  相似文献

Substantial increases of the ion temperature can be observed at high latitudes as a consequence of strong convection electric fields. We have measured, with EISCAT, three independent components of the ion velocity vector and temperature in the same scattering volume, at about 300 km. During periods of strong variations in ion velocity (consequently of the E-field), the ion temperatures derived at the 3 sites are different. This difference, which appears to be systematic for the two experiments studied, can be interpreted in terms of different ion temperature perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field, i.e. Ti greater than Ti. Assuming that a bi-Maxwellian distribution is present for convection electric field strengths as large as 50 mV m−1, one obtains an anisotropy factor of approximately 1.5. It also appears that resonant charge exchange is the dominant collision process. During the evening sector events studied, the electron density was decreasing, whereas the electron temperature was generally increasing. Such events are strongly related to variations in the magnetic H component detected on the ground.  相似文献

Luminescence dating techniques have been used extensively for archaeological and geological samples. Such techniques are based on thermally or optically stimulated signals. This paper presents simulations of several luminescence techniques for equivalent dose (ED) estimation for ceramic materials containing quartz. The simulations are carried out using a recently published comprehensive kinetic model for quartz, consisting of 11 electron and hole traps and centers. The complete sequence of the experimental protocols for several thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques are simulated using the same set of kinetic parameters. The specific simulated protocols are: additive dose TL protocol, predose technique (both additive and multiple activation versions), phototransfer protocol, single aliquot regenerative optically stimulated luminescence (SAR-OSL) protocol, and SAR thermoluminescence protocol (SAR-TL). One hundred random variants of the natural samples were generated by keeping the transition probabilities between energy levels fixed, while allowing simultaneous random variations of the concentrations of the 11 energy levels. The relative intrinsic accuracy and precision of the protocols are simulated by calculating the equivalent dose (ED) within the model, for a given natural burial dose of the sample. The intrinsic accuracy of these techniques is estimated by simulating natural irradiation of the samples with a known burial dose, followed by simulation of the luminescence method used to recover the estimated dose ED. The percent difference between the burial dose and the ED value represents the simulated accuracy of the luminescence technique. The relative intrinsic precision of these techniques is estimated by fitting Gaussian probability functions to the ED values obtained with the 100 model variants. It is found that the various techniques can reproduce natural paleodoses in the range 10 mGy–10 Gy with a typical intrinsic accuracy of +1 to 10%. Techniques based on single aliquot protocols were found in general to be more precise than techniques requiring the use of multiple aliquots. In addition, techniques based on interpolation of experimental data were found to be consistently both more precise and accurate than those based on extrapolation of experimental data.  相似文献

The geographic distribution and relative importance of traditional agricultural systems in Hawai?i, based on ethnohistoric and archeological data, is only partially understood. Knowledge of the size and distribution of these systems is critical in estimating island populations, production, and surplus, as well as for assessing societal dynamics and the sustainability of indigenous agricultural systems. We employ geospatial modeling using rainfall, elevation, soil type, streamflow, slope, and substrate age, to create a geographic information system (GIS) model for the distribution of four major production systems on Moloka?i Island – intensive pondfield irrigation, intensive dryland cropping, extensive colluvial slope agriculture, and fishpond aquaculture. Model results were checked against archaeological data sets for known areas, testing for goodness of fit between model predictions and empirical field evidence. Our model predicts that Moloka?i could have sustained 9.52 km2 of irrigated pondfields, 7.98 km2 of intensive dryland systems, and 18.5 km2 of colluvial slope agriculture. Fishponds are estimated to have yielded 17.98 metric tons of fish protein per year. The total agricultural production for the island is calculated to be 41,490 metric tons per year (wet weight), with pondfield, dryland, and slope systems yielding 46, 17, and 37 percent of total production respectively. Our results indicate that colluvial slope cultivation, which has been largely ignored in previous studies, was a major contributor to Hawaiian agricultural production, especially on the geologically older islands. Pondfield irrigation and colluvial slope systems had higher caloric efficiency than intensive dryland field systems, providing greater surplus to labor ratios in areas with abundant land suitable to irrigation and slope cultivation. Surplus discrepancies likely influenced population distribution as well as sociopolitical dynamics between districts and among neighboring islands. The model has applicability to the entire Hawaiian archipelago and to other islands in Polynesia, where it may be used to estimate pre-contact agricultural production and carrying capacities, two main factors influencing pre-contact social and political dynamics in Hawai?i and other island groups.  相似文献
