The flux of ionisation at 850 km height is calculated using the MSIS atmospheric model, a simplified form for the continuity equation at the peak of the F2-layer, and observed values of NmF2. Results are given for stations at latitudes of 32°N, 21°N, 21°S and 37°S during 1971 and for Tahiti (18°S) in 1980. Changes in the neutral atmosphere and in the hmF2 model have minor effects at low latitudes, where the fluxes are larger, but can appreciably alter the results at mid latitudes. Increased recombination due to N2 vibrational excitation produces a large afternoon decrease in NmF2 in summer, near solar maximum, and an increased downward flux. At all stations the day-time flux has a much larger downward component in winter than in summer. Because of the eastward magnetic declination, zonal winds produce opposite effects on the diurnal variations of hmF2, NmF2 and flux in the northern and southern hemispheres. Downward fluxes are largest in the morning in the southern hemisphere and in the late afternoon and evening in the north. At ± 21° latitude, neutral winds have a major effect on the distribution of ionisation from the equatorial fountain. Thus, at the solstices the day-time flow is about 4 times larger in winter than in summer. Averaged over both hemispheres, the total flow at 21° latitude is approximately the same for solstice and equinox conditions. At mid latitudes there is a downwards flux of about 1–2 × 1012 m2 s−1 into the night ionosphere.  相似文献

The atmospheric circulation response to solar flares and geomagnetic disturbances is studied. It is shown that solar flares cause an increase of the zonal circulation intensity in the latitudinal belt ϑ = 45–65°, while geomagnetic disturbances are associated with a decrease of the circulation intensity. The energy necessary to produce the observed atmospheric circulation changes is estimated. The variation of the atmospheric transparency is suggested to be a possible source of that energy.  相似文献

X-ray measurements at balloon altitudes were made at São José dos Campos, Brasil (23°12′S, 45°51′W geographic coordinates, ~11°S geomagnetic latitude) on 18 December 1981, using an omnidirectional NaI(T1) scintillation detector. Atmospheric X-rays, namely secondary X-radiation from cosmic rays, were measured for the energy interval 30–155 keV and up to an atmospheric depth of 5.5 g cm−2. A comparison of the flux measured at the Pfotzer maximum during these measurements with those obtained previously by several research groups at other latitudes and with a similar technique has also been made. Finally, a comparison of the atmospheric component with that attributed to the diffuse component is also presented and it is concluded that both components are of about the same magnitude at ~ 5 g cm−2 and at ~ 11°S geomagnetic latitude.  相似文献

Whistler-mode signals observed at Faraday, Antarctica (65° S, 64° W, Λ=50.8°) show anomalous changes in group delay and Doppler shift with time during the main phase of intense geomagnetic activity. These changes are interpreted as the effect of refracting signals into and out of ducts near L=2.5 by electron concentration gradients associated with edges of the mid-latitude ionospheric trough. The refraction region is observed to propagate equatorwards at velocities in the range 20–85 ms−1 during periods of high geomagnetic activity (Kp ≥ 5), which is in good agreement with typical trough velocities. Model estimates of the time that the trough edges come into view from Faraday show a good correlation with the observed start times of the anomalous features. Whistler-mode signals observed at Dunedin, New Zealand (46° S, 171° E, Λ=52.5°) that have propagated at an average L-shell of 2.2 (Λ=47.6°) do not show such trough-related changes in group delay. These observations are consistent with a lower occurrence of the trough at lower invariant latitudes.  相似文献

Changes in total electron content during magnetic storms are compared at stations with similar geographic and geomagnetic latitudes and eastward declinations in the northern and southern hemispheres.Mean patterns are obtained from 58 storms at ±35° and 28 storms at ± 20° latitude. The positive storm phase is generally larger (and earlier) in the southern hemisphere, while negative storm effects are larger in the north. These changes reduce the normal asymmetry in TEC between the two hemispheres. Composition changes calculated from the MSIS86 atmospheric model agree well with the maximum decreases in TEC in both seasons (when changes in the F-layer height are ignored). Recovery occurs with a time constant of about 35 h; this is 50% longer than in the MSIS86 model. There is a marked diurnal variation at 35°S, with a rapid overnight decay and enhanced values of TEC in the afternoon. This pattern is inverted (and weaker) at 35°N, where night-time decay is consistently slower than on undisturbed nights. These results require a diurnal change in composition of opposite sign in the two hemispheres, or enhanced westward winds at night changing to eastward near sunrise. There is some evidence for both these mechanisms. Following a night-time sudden commencement there is a large annual effect with daytime TEC increasing for storms near the June solstice and decreasing near December. Storms occurring between November and April tend to give large, irregular increases in TEC for several days, particularly at low latitudes. In summer and winter at both stations, the mean size of the negative phase does not increase for storms with Kp> 6. The size of the positive phase is proportional to the size of the change in ap in winter, while in summer a positive phase is seen only for the larger storms.  相似文献

The previous dynamical, computer simulation model of the ionosphere at low latitudes of Chan H. F. and Walker G. O. (1984a, J. atmos. terr. Phys. 46, 1103; 1984b, J. atmos. terr. Phys. 46, 1113) has been modified to (1) include photoionization of molecular species NO+, N2+ and O2+ below 300km, (2) decouple the ionization and wind calculations below 180 km and (3) expand the geographical coverage to 46°N-30°S latitude. The first two modifications improved the model stability and the latter reduced the effect of the lateral boundaries on the equatorial anomaly. Results are presented for the representative seasonal months of January, April and July for East Asia, during solar minimum, comprising latitudinal-local standard time (120°E) contour plots of (1) the atmospheric pressure, (2) the computed meridional wind at 300 km, (3) the foF2 and (4) hmF2, together with latitudinal profiles of foF2 and NT (electron content) showing the daytime development and nighttime decay of the equatorial anomaly.Comparisons have been made between the computer simulations and various experimental measurements of foF2, M(3000) F2 and NT obtained in East Asia during periods of low solar activity. Most of the gross features of the development and decay of the equatorial anomaly at the various seasons were reproducible by the model simulations, the best agreement occurring for the equinoctial month of April.  相似文献

The present investigation attempts to bring out the dynamics of the F-region at magnetic equatorial and low latitudes in the American zone. Data are examined for two sets of nights, one with strong range-type spread at Huancayo another with complete absence of spread-F. A prominent bulge of the F-region was observed within and below a latitude 10°N in the evening hours of the spread-F nights. Contours of electron distribution during post-sunset hours at the equatorial latitude, Huancayo (Dip 2°N); low latitude, Talara (dip 13°N); and a location near the anomaly crest location, Panama (dip 38°N), indicated a much steeper gradient in electron density at fixed heights on spread-F nights compared to a rather low gradient on the nonspread-F nights. Enhanced concentration of electrons at the anomaly crest location Panama, and a lower density at the equatorial location Huancayo, were observed on spread-F present nights. This is attributed to the phenomena of an evening plasma fountain in operation at equatorial latitudes on spread-F nights.  相似文献

In the geometrical optics approximation, a synthesis oblique ionogram of ionospheric and magnetospheric HF radio wave signals propagating between magnetic conjugate points has been carried out. The magnetospheric HF propagation is considered for a model of the waveguide formed by field-aligned irregularities with depleted electron density. The characteristic peculiarities of the magnetospheric mode have been determined: (i) strong disperion of the group delay with a frequency at 14–18 MHz, from − 1.4 to 0.6 ms/MHz for magnetically conjugate points at geomagnetic latitudes φ = 30°, 40° and 50°, respectively, (ii) spreading ∼ 1–2 ms, and (iii) a possibility of propagation between magnetic conjugates points at moderately low geomagnetic latitudes φ0 ∼ 30–40° at frequencies exceeding 1.5 times the maximum usable frequency (MUF) of multi-hop ionospheric propagation.  相似文献

The relative importance of the equatorial plasma fountain (caused by vertical E x B drift at the equator) and neutral winds in leading to the ionospheric variations at equatorial-anomaly latitudes, with particular emphasis on conjugate-hemisphere differences, is investigated using a plasmasphere model. Values of ionospherec electron content (IEC) and peak electron density (Nmax) computed at conjugate points in the magnetic latitude range 10–30° at longitude 158°W reproduce the observed seasonal, solar activity, and latitudinal variations of IEC and Nmax, including the conjugate-hemisphere differences. The model results show that the plasma fountain, in the absence of neutral winds, produces almost identical effects at conjugate points in all seasons; neutral winds cause conjugate-hemisphere differences by modulating the fountain and moving the ionospheres at the conjugate hemispheres to different altitudes. At equinox., the neutral winds, mainly the zonal wind, modulate the fountain to supply more ionization to the northern hemisphere during evening and night-time hours and, at the same time, cause smaller chemical loss in the southern hemisphere by raising the ionosphere. The gain of ionization through the reduction in chemical loss is greater than that supplied by the fountain and causes stronger premidnight enhancements. in IEC and Nmax (with delayed peaks) in the southern hemisphere at all latitudes (10–30°). The same mechanism, but with the hemispheres of more flux and less chemical loss interchanged, causes stronger daytime IEC in the northern hemisphere at all latitudes. At solstice, the neutral winds, mainly the meridional wind, modulate the fountain differently at different altitudes and latitudes with a general interhemispheric flow from the summer to the winter hemisphere at altitudes above the F-region peaks. The interhemispheric flow causes stronger premidnight enhancements in IEC and Nmax and stronger daytime Nmax in the winter hemisphere, especially at latitudes equatorward of the anomaly crest. The altitude and latitude distributions of the daytime plasma flows combined with the longer daytime period can cause stronger daytime IEC in the summer hemisphere at all latitudes.  相似文献

Intervals of F-region electron density depletions associated with the main (mid-latitude) ionospheric trough have been studied using latitude scanning experiments with the EISCAT UHF radar. From 450 h of measurements over a one year period at solar minimum (April 1986–April 1987) the local time of appearance of the trough at a given latitude is observed to vary by up to about 8 h. No seasonal dependence of location is apparent, but troughs are absent in the data from summertime experiments. A weak dependence of trough location on Kp is found, and an empirical model predicting the latitude of the trough is proposed. The model is shown to be more appropriate than other available quantitative models for the latitudes covered by EISCAT. Detailed studies of four individual days show no relationship between local magnetic activity and time of observation of the trough. On all four of these days, however, the edge of the auroral oval, evidenced by enhanced electron densities in the E-region, is found to be approximately co-located with, or up to 1° poleward of, the F-region density minimum. Simultaneous ion drift velocity measurements show that the main trough is a region of strong (> several hundred metres per second) westward flow, with its boundary located approximately 1°–2° equatorward of the density minimum. Within the accuracy of the observations this relationship between the convection boundary, the trough minimum and the precipitation boundary is independent of local time and latitude. The relevance of these results is discussed in relation to theoretical models of the F-reregion at high latitudes.  相似文献

The quiet night-time E-region at high latitudes has been studied using the EISCAT UHF radar. Data from three subsequent nights during a long period of low magnetic activity are shown and typical features of electron density are described. The background electron density is observed to be 5·109 m−3 or smaller. Two types of enhancements above this level are observed ; one is due to charged particle precipitation associated with the F-region trough and the other is composed of sporadic-E layers due to waves in the neutral atmosphere. The sporadic-E is observed to exist almost continuously and to exhibit a regular diurnal behaviour. In addition to the typical afternoon and morning sequential layers, a third major descending layer is formed at night after the passage of the F-region trough The afternoon layer disappears simultaneously with the enhancement of the northward trough-associated electric field and the night-time layer appears at high altitudes after the field has again been reduced to a small value. It is suggested that metal ions from low altitudes are swept by the electric field to the upper E-region where they are again compressed to the night-time layer. A set of steeply descending weaker layers, merging to the main night-time layer are also observed. These layers are most probably caused by atmospheric gravity waves. Theoretical profiles for molecular ions indicate that the strongest layers are necessarily composed of metal ions but, during times when the layers are at their weakest, they may be mainly composed of molecular ions.  相似文献

Night-time mesospheric temperatures were simultaneously determined from the Doppler broadening of the D2 resonance line of atmospheric sodium excited by a laser and from the rotational distribution of the P1(1), P1(3) and P1(4) lines of the OH(3,1) band by an i.r. spectrometer. Both instruments were located at the Andøya Rocket Range (69°N, 16°E). The mesospheric temperature gradient permits determination of the altitude of the OH1 emitting layer from a comparison of the equivalent layer temperatures calculated from the height-resolved Na Doppler temperatures with the observed OH1 rotational temperatures. The altitude of the OH1 layer maximum is determined with an accuracy of ±4 km. For 3 nights in January 1986 the OH1 emission layer is found near an altitude of 86 km.  相似文献

Winds and tides were measured by a number of MLT (Mesosphere, Lower Thermosphere) radars with locations varying from 43–70°N, 35–68°S, during the first LTCS (Lower Thermosphere Coupling Study) Campaign, 21–25 September 1987. The mean winds were globally westerly, consistent with early winter-like (NH) and late winter (SH) circulations. The semi-diurnal tide had vertical wavelengths near or less than 100 km at most locations, with some latitudinal variation (longer/shorter at lower latitudes in the NH/SH)—amplitudes decreased at high latitudes. The global tide was closer to anti-symmetric, with northward components being in phase at 90 km. Numerical model calculations [Forbes and Vial (1989), J. atmos. lerr. Phys. 51, 649] for September have rather similar wavelengths and amplitudes; however, the global tide was closer to symmetric, and detailed latitudinal trends differed from observed. The diurnal tide had similar wavelengths in each hemisphere, with short values (~30 km) at 35°, long (evanescence) at 68–70°, and irregular phase structures at mid-latitudes. The tide was neither symmetric nor anti-symmetric. Model calculations for the equinox [Forbes. S and Hagan (1988), Planet. Space Sci. 36, 579] were by nature symmetric, and showed the short wavelengths extending to mid-latitudes (43–52°). Southern hemisphere phases were significantly (6–8 h) different from observations. Amplitudes decreased at high latitudes in model and observation profiles.  相似文献

Measurements of precipitating particles on board DMSP F7 spacecraft are used to analyze the distribution of ionospheric conductance in the midnight auroral zone during substorms. The distribution is compared with the meridional profile of ionospheric currents calculated from magnetic data from the Kara meridional chain. Two regions of high Hall conductance are found; one of them is the traditional auroral zone, at latitudes 64–68°, and the other is a narrow band at latitudes 70–73°. The position of high conductance zones is in agreement with the location of the intense westward currents. The accelerated particle population is typical of electrons Ee > 5 keV in the high conductance region.  相似文献

The spatial coherence of the first two Schumann resonant modes has been studied at two locations in the polar cap separated by 1100 km. Measurements were made at Assistance Bay and Mould Bay, which have geomagnetic latitudes of 83° and 79°, respectively, and satellite time-keeping was employed to accurately synchronise the field stations. The coherence was found to be high, typically 95% for the first Schumann mode, and was unaffected by changes in Kp, a storm sudden commencement or a solar flare event. Polarization rotations were observed between the two stations, which could most likely be attributed to the coastline effect. The results are consistent with a stable propagation of Schumann activity from mid to high latitudes that is relatively unaffected by changes in the polar cap ionosphere.  相似文献

A realistic model for the temperature variation along geomagnetic field lines is described. For high altitudes (>1500 km) the temperature is taken to increase as the nth power of radial distance (n−2), giving temperatures consistent with those measured in situ by high altitude satellites. For realistic temperatures at low altitude an extra term is included. The temperature gradient along the field line is then 0.9–1.6° km−1 during the day and 0.5–0.7° km−1 during the night at 1000 km, reducing to about half these values at 2000 km, for the latitude range 35–50°. This is consistent with calculations made from nearly simultaneous satellite measurements at 1000 and 2500 km. It is shown that assuming diffusive equilibrium, including the new temperature model, more realistic equatorial electron density profiles result than for isothermal field lines. The temperature gradient model is also purposely formulated to be of a form that enables the temperature modified geopotential height to be obtained without numerical integration. This renders the model particularly suitable for ray-tracing calculations. A ray-tracing model is developed and it is shown that unducted ray paths are significantly altered from the corresponding paths in an equivalent isothermal model; there is greater refraction and magnetospheric reflection takes place at lower altitudes. For summer day conditions, an inter-hemispheric unducted ray path becomes possible from 26° latitude that can reach the ground at the conjugate.  相似文献

An observational study of the D-region winter anomaly of HF radio wave absorption in lower latitudes has been made during the period of a sudden stratospheric warming of the 1967/1968 winter. By means of large-scale isopleth analysis of the absorption index, ƒmin, and of meridional winds near 70 km height along 60°N, it is found that there exists a winter anomaly in lower latitudes which is comparable in order to that in middle latitudes, resulting from a nitric oxide (NO) increase due to southward transport from higher latitudes by well-developed planetary wave winds. From the daily changes of absorption in the equatorial region, it is found that the enhanced absorption reveals an oscillation with a period of about 2 weeks and has its maximum in the region south of 20°N. The period is similar to that of planetary wave amplitudes in the winter stratosphere and mesosphere, suggesting that an effect of planetary waves could contribute to the equatorial anomaly of the absorption in the D-region.  相似文献

Fired bricks are used in archaeomagnetic work to determine the Inclination I of the earth's magnetic field at the time of firing. However, in addition to the usual mean error of between ± 1/2° and ± 2° due mainly to inexact levelling of the bricks during the firing, there is a systematic error in the measured mean value of the Inclination that may amount to 2° or 3° at high magnetic latitudes (I? 80°), while at lower magnetic latitudes (I< 60°) it is usually less than 1/2°. A method of correction based on the measured statistical spread of the bricks is suggested.  相似文献
