The influence of neutral winds on the propagation of medium-scale atmospheric gravity waves at mid-latitudes is investigated. A 3-dimensional neutral wind model is developed and used together with an atmospheric model in a gravity-wave ray-tracing analysis. It is demonstrated that the thermospheric wind can act as a filter for waves travelling at unfavorable angles to the mean flow, via the mechanisms of reflection and critical coupling. This wind filtering action rotates clockwise diurnally through 360° in the northern hemisphere. Observational evidence is presented which supports these predictions. Extensive modelling indicates that (a) faster and longer period waves are least affected by the neutral winds and (b) fixed-height (e.g. HF Doppler) observations of medium scale gravity waves is only likely to be possible for waves generated locally (within 500–1000 km). Waves generated at greater distances are probably dissipated before reaching the observation region.  相似文献

Using N-h profiles, critical frequency data, and the AE index, we find that daytime positive storm effects at middle latitudes are caused by uplifting of ionization and lag the onset of substorm activity by about 2.5 h. Since the increase in electron concentration lags the increase in layer height by about one hour, the perturbation responsible for positive storm effects should propagate with a high velocity (~500 m/s) from high to lower latitudes. Travelling atmospheric disturbances are offered as a possible explanation for short and medium duration events. A model calculation of the ionospheric response to such a perturbation supports our hypothesis.  相似文献

The disturbances observed by the Japanese ionospheric observation network following the explosions of Mount Pinatubo on 15 June 1991, are presented. Remarkable ionospheric fluctuations with periods of about 20 min appeared in the records of HF Doppler and total electron content (TEC) data. Traveling wave fronts of ionospheric disturbances scaled from these data give a northward horizontal velocity of 290 m/s. The surface pressure fluctuations due to the passage of atmospheric waves were confirmed by the microbarograph chain data in Japan. There existed three kinds of northward traveling pressure fluctuations; short-period (2–5 min) fluctuations with a horizontal velocity of 290 m/s, long-period (8–10 min) fluctuations with 300 m/s, and 17-min fluctuations with 281 m/s. It is concluded that the ionospheric and surface pressure waves were caused by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo.  相似文献

Caesium-137 from fallout from nuclear weapons tests is adsorbed on fine sediments and becomes an effective tracer. It is hypothesised that within a drainage basin, sites undergoing little or no erosion accumulate 137 Cs in their upper layers; cultivated soils will have 137 Cs uniformly distributed within the cultivated layer; eroded soils, cultivated or not, will have relatively less l37 Cs, depending on the severity of erosion. Accumulated sediments will have characteristic 137 Cs profiles reflecting temporal fallout variations and sedimentation history. This hypothetical model is largely confirmed by results from Maluna Creek basin, where erosion and accumulation of sediments has taken place. Soils under viticulture have about one third the 137 Cs content of soils with grass cover, indicating more severe erosion under cultivation. Caesium-137 profiles in alluvial fan and flood plain deposits correlate with sediment layers and known cultivation history.  相似文献

A 5-yr study (1987–1992) has been undertaken at a southern mid-latitude station, Brisbane (35.6°S invariant latitude) on scintillation occurrences in radio-satellite transmission (at a frequency of 150 MHz) from polar orbit Transit satellites, within a sub-ionospheric invariant latitude range 20–55°S. Over 7000 recorded passes were used to define the spatial and temporal occurrence pattern of different types of scintillation events. Two predominant scintillation types were found: so-called type P (associated with a scintillation patch close to the magnetic zenith) and type S (characteristic of the equatorward edge of auroral scintillation oval). Type S was by far the most frequent during sunspot maximum (1988–1992), with sharp occurrence peaks in the summer-autumn period. Its seasonal occurrence showed a high degree of correlation (correlation coefficient r = 0.8) with the seasonally averaged 10.7 cm solar radio flux. This type occurred mainly at night-time except in austral summer where 40% of scintillations were detected in daytime, coinciding with the well-known summer peak of sporadic-E occurrence. Type P was more predominant during a year (1987) of ascending sunspot activity but decreased to a much lower level during the sunspot maximum.  相似文献

Shells of the rock murex, Trunculariopsis trunculus (Linné, 1758), used in the purple dye industry in ancient maritime civilizations, have been found in archaeological sites along the coasts of Israel. Some of these shells bear drilled holes. Biological study revealed that such holes were probably drilled by cannibalistic conspecifics, but only under artificial conditions. This indicates that the ancients may have maintained these snails alive in captivity until they accumulated a sufficient quantity of fresh snails for their dye industry.  相似文献

An extended period (1973–1985) of recording of random and Fresnel type quasi-periodic (QP) scintillations in southern mid-latitudes, using satellite beacon transmissions at a frequency of 150 MHz, has provided some new information on the morphology of scintillation-producing irregularities.It has become evident that a pronounced daytime increase of the random type of scintillations in the southern winter (at 1200–1600 LT) occurs throughout the solar cycle and becomes a distinct daytime maximum during the years of sunspot minimum. Scintillations are most intense in the pre-midnight period in the southern summer (2000–2400 LT). There is a gradual decline in scintillation activity by about 40% from the period of sunspot maximum to the period of sunspot minimum. It appears that a specific type of sporadic-E, so-called constant height Es (Esc), is responsible for daytime scintillation activity in winter. Night-time scintillations are strongly correlated with the presence of the range-spread type of spread-F, but not so with the frequency-spread type.There are two peaks in the occurrence of QP scintillations, predominantly in the southern summer: in the late morning (0800–1000 LT) and in the pre-midnight period (2000–2200 LT). The daytime QP scintillations occur mainly polewards of the station, whereas the night-time scintillations are recorded predominantly equatorwards. There is a distinct increase in the occurrence number of QP scintillations with a decrease in the sunspot number.  相似文献

Experimental results are produced which show that the early part of the sunrise effect is apparently not related to variations in the temperature or humidity of the lower atmosphere. An electrode effect space charge layer tends to obscure rather than enhance the effect. The expected seasonal variation in the sunrise effect was not found. The first ionospheric plasma convection maps ordered by the y- and z-components of the IMF using only data from the southern hemisphere are presented. These patterns are determined from line-of-sight velocity measurements of the Polar Anglo-American Conjugate Experiment (PACE) located at Halley, Antarctica, with the majority of the observations coming from 65°–75° magnetic latitude. For IMF Bz positive and negative conditions, the observed plasma motions are consistent with a standard two cell pattern. For the periods from dusk through midnight to dawn, flow speeds are at least twice as large for Bz negative component compared with Bz positive. The observations about noon are significantly different from each other. For Bz positive, little ordered plasma motion is observed. For Bz negative, there are large anti-sunward flows the orientation of which is ordered by IMF By. These By orientated flows are consistent with theoretical predictions, and are anti-symmetric to those reported from the northern hemisphere. The two most significant differences from previous observations are that the convection reversal in the late morning sector for By negative conditions occurs at about a 4° lower latitude than the Heppner and Maynard (1987) model. This may be due to a seasonal bias in the PACE dataset. Also, the separatrix between eastward and westward flow near midnight has a very different shape dependent upon the orientation of IMF By. For positive By conditions, the separatrix is observed at progressively lower latitudes at later local times, but for By negative conditions, the separatrix appears at increasingly higher latitudes at later times.  相似文献

Radar observations have been carried out at Aberystwyth (52.4°N, 4.1°W) during the period May–August 1990 to search for echoes analogous to the Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes commonly observed at high latitudes. Signal strength measurements in the vertical and at 12° from the vertical are used to examine the aspect sensitivity of echoes, and Doppler measurements at 6° from the vertical and in the vertical to estimate wind velocities. The observations show the presence of two types of moderately strong echoes from heights above 80 km. On most days a spectrally broad echo is observed with characteristics consistent with isotropic turbulence scatter. On certain days between mid-June and mid-July, stronger spectrally narrow echoes are observed with characteristics similar to Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes.  相似文献

Nitrogen isotope ratios in tissues are often used to aid in the reconstruction of the marine component of diets in past populations. Elevated δ15N values normally found with high trophic level marine resource consumption can, however, also be mimicked by physiological conditions (breastfeeding, pathological states affecting nitrogen balance), climate (aridity), and anthropogenic environments (manuring). This paper presents a pilot study testing whether bromine concentrations can provide a tool for teasing apart possible causes of variation in nitrogen isotope ratios. Blind analyses of bromine in archaeological samples correctly identified individuals derived from coastal vs. inland regions and high vs. low marine consumption time periods. Thus, bromine can provide an important supplement to other isotopic analyses of diet.  相似文献

A mechanism of strong turbulence is proposed for interpretation of the resonances observed by a wide-band receiver during topside sounding. The turbulence is created in the vicinity of the spacecraft due to the striction modulation instability. Experimental results obtained with the aid of a wide-band receiver on board the Intercosmos-19 satellite are discussed in terms of strong wave-wave and/or wave-particle interaction, namely electron acceleration in Langmuir cavitons and non-linear generation of the electron Langmuir plasma waves and Tonks-Dattner resonances.  相似文献

The noctiiucent cloud display of 10/11th July 1979 was observed from two sites in Scotland: Clinterty near Aberdeen, using a low light level TV camera, and Milngavie near Glasgow, using a photographic camera. Coincident observations of the display were made from 23.55 UT until 00.50 UT.By projecting the image of the noctilucent cloud structure as seen by one camera into the field of view of the other camera, the height of the clouds was found to be 82 ± 1 km. Using this result, the effect of atmospheric screening on the visible border of the noctilucent clouds was determined. Taking account of the refraction on the solar grazing rays illuminating the clouds at the visible border and the finite angular diameter of the sun's disc, the altitude of the screening layer was determined to be 7 ± 1 km. Thus, on this occasion, the screening effect of the atmosphere was confined to the troposphere and was probably caused by atmospheric haze and/or tropospheric cloud.This result contrasts markedly with the high values of screening height, ~ 30 km, deduced from measurements made earlier this century, also using the visible boundary of the clouds. The analysis presented herein indicates that these large values were probably in error, due to the poor dynamic range of the photographic films employed.  相似文献

The total rate of recombination in the night-time ionosphere above Malvern (at L = 2.6) was estimated using a model atmosphere, and the results were compared with the observed rate of change of total electron content to determine the net influx of plasma. Horizontal transport under the influence of electric fields was an important factor on a time-scale of an hour or less but when averaged throughout the night made little contribution. The main influx of plasma was a downward diffusion from the protonosphere, especially before midnight. The average downward flux increased steadily as the protonosphere filled after a magnetic storm, with a saturation time of at least 8 days.  相似文献

Over time, the residential areas close to city centres have experienced change in their function and social structure. In Istanbul a functional and social change is also observed, especially in the residential buildings near the historical city centre. This study investigated this process of transformation through a research project conducted in the southern part of the Istanbul Historical Peninsula (old city centre) and documents the recent functional changes in this district. It also considers the role of tourism in the process of inner city transformation. On the basis of the data collected during the study, proposals are forwarded for the future development of the area.  相似文献

In a previous paper we demonstrated a method by which the auroral radio absorption measured with a riometer can be predicted from energetic electron measurements at geosynchronous orbit. The present paper enquires to what extent the process can be inverted: what levels of magnetospheric electron flux, and of D-region production rate, electron density and incremental absorption, are predicted by a given measurement of radio absorption and what reliance can be placed on such predictions?Using data from 45 precipitation features recorded with riometers in Scandinavia and at geosynchronous orbit with GEOS-2, it is shown that electron fluxes in the ranges 20–40,40–80 and 80–160 keV increase with increasing absorption and can be predicted to better than 50% for absorption events of 2 dB or greater. Electrons above 160 keV show little or no correlation with absorption. D-region production rates and electron densities can be predicted to within factors of 2 and √2, respectively.It is more difficult to specify the height of the absorbing region because of uncertainly in the profile of the effective recombination coefficient. Having regard to other data, an αeff profile is proposed which satisfies rocket and incoherent scatter data as well as the present calculations. It is shown that any day-night variation in auroral absorption is associated with a change of spectrum rather than a change of recombination coefficient.  相似文献

Horizontal transport under the influence of electric fields was measured but at the latitude of St. Santin this was always small and averaged over the night as a whole the contribution was negligible. Downward diffusion provided the main source of plasma and the flux predicted was compared with the flux measured at 450 km. The comparison was good provided the model atmosphere was modified to use exospheric temperatures based on actual measurements by the incoherent scatter radar. A comparison with the results obtained at Malvern (Paper I) confirmed that the saturation time for the protonosphere at L = 1.8 is far less than at L = 2.6 and that the downward flux from the saturated protonosphere was also less.  相似文献

Rock art has been regarded as a second class archaeological data source. In this paper we use Levantine rock art as a case study, to show how this situation can be reversed. This rock art, found along the Mediterranean region of the Iberian Peninsula, has been considered to be typically Mesolithic due to its distinctive hunting scenes. A review of certain archaeological indicators provides new arguments about its chronology, its socio-cultural attribution, and its significance. We first deal with the chronological issue, presenting the evidence that led to the recent consideration of the Levantine style as Early Neolithic, in synchrony with two other rock art styles (Schematic and Macroschematic). We will further propose that rock art itself is a central and independent source of information to explore the historical context of the Neolithisation of Mediterranean Iberia. Its wide geographical distribution allows us to study different and complementary territories as a single entity. This contrasts with the limitations posed by the study of settlements, whose differences, at a regional scale, are usually interpreted in terms of cultural variability. If we consider rock art as a key aspect in the constitution of social landscapes, it must not be treated just as an ideological by-product of the Neolithisation, but as a key factor in understanding this historical process.  相似文献
