Abstract

Salisbury Cathedral's cloister has received less scholarly attention than it merits. An important and outstanding issue is that of the structure's date. This has never been securely established, and there is no scholarly consensus on the matter. With reference to documentary and archaeological evidence, this article establishes unequivocally a documented start-date of after 15 June 1263 for the second stage of the project. In so doing it confirms the opinion of Pamela Blum, and corrects mistakes in her article of 1991 on the sequence of the 13th-century building campaigns at Salisbury.

Abstract

The tiled pavement in the nave of Haughmond Abbey, Shropshire, has been partly exposed twice in the last hundred years. Although no decoration appears to survive in situ, a few decorated tiles in the loose collection may derive from this floor. The most significant of these, a roundel fragment, carries the design of a tonsured monk with a crozier. Although this design and the whole mosaic arrangement of the in situ tiles are unique, a comparison can be drawn with the pavement donated by Abbot Nicholas at Halesowen. The arrangement of roundels and frame tiles and the subject matter of the decorated roundels are sufficiently similar to posit a direct connection. There are no close dates for the Haughmond floor, but it is suggested that the Halesowen pavement, dated 1290–98, was the prototype.

Salisbury Cathedral was first built with a low, insubstantial stone lantern, perhaps with a timber superstructure, over the central crossing. In the fourteenth century the lantern became the foundation for the tower. Both it, and the steeple on top, were reinforced with networks of iron bars at their interface. There is also a complex iron framework in the lantern to prevent the collapse of its walls. The origin, purpose, and technology of iron reinforcement of medieval buildings is discussed. In time, because of corrosion, these reinforcements became less effective and even damaging to the fabric. Wren was the first of a succession of architects and engineers in the last 350 years who have initiated additional schemes of reinforcement at Salisbury.     

泰山王母池九月九庙会调查报告

一、缘起 　　山东省泰山王母池庙会分为三月三的蟠桃会和九月九庙会,其中学者多关注蟠桃会,由此透视王母信仰文化变迁状况,②但对九月九庙会重视不足.九月九恰值重阳节、老人节、登山节、斗母诞辰,众多节俗叠合粘连,香客的信仰活动达到了这个季度的高潮;九月九在时间体系上与三月三对立和差异,它特有添北斗习俗.2005年10月10日至13日,山东大学、山东艺术学院一行19人,对泰山王母池以及周边地区的信仰形态做了初步调查.田野作业中采用观察、访谈等方法,重在对信仰的现在状态进行把握和描述.……     

Notice of the Annual Meeting,at Norwich

Excavations took place in 1969, in advance of housing development, on the site of a fourth-century Roman pottery workshop, two adjacent kilns, a well, a large pit and two burials. The workshop contained internal features linked with pottery production, including possible emplacements for potters' wheels. Two kilns, each constructed differently, were producing grey and colour-coated wares. A large pit was used for rubbish. A well, square in plan, was associated with the workshop and must have provided water for the potters. Of particular interest was a complete millstone, which appears to have been used as a flywheel fixed to a potter's wheel. Pottery production at the site may have continued into the early part of the fifth century and as such is one of the last known production centres of the Roman Nene valley pottery industry. The site is significant in that it probably represents a near complete and typical industrial pottery production unit within a major pottery production area of the province and represents an important aspect of the late Roman economy.

The recently found wall-paintings at North Mymms Park, Hertfordshire (a privately owned house, not open to the public), (TL 217042) are introduced, the history of the building and its relevant ownership is discussed, the paintings described, comparisons made, possible sources for the paintings considered, and date ranges suggested. An account of the subsequent conservation work is given.
