The Exchange of Matter “Nature—Society—Nature” and some Problems of Optimization

The metabolism of the man-nature relationship is analyzed in terms of resource cycles, defined as the sum of the conversions and movements of particular natural substances (or groups of substances) in the course of their extraction, processing and consumption, and their return to the environment. Six resource cycles are distinguished: an energy resource cycle, with a chemical subcycle; an ore-metal resource cycle, with a chemical subcycle; a nonmetallic mineral cycle; a forest resource cycle; a soil and climate resource cycle, and a fauna and flora resource cycle. The first three cycles, based on mineral resources, are treated in detail. Under each heading, the author discusses present and expected levels of extraction and processing in the USSR and in the United States and related problems of waste disposal and pollution of the environment. Further research on regional and local metabolisms is suggested.     

“The family farm”: A review of a central concept in western European agricultural politics

This article explores the differences between Danish lay and Roman inquisitorial witchcraft prosecution, by investigating the understanding of witchcraft and how it inflicted on the course of the trials. For the first half of the 17th century, the understanding of witchcraft among Danish lay judges corresponded to popular beliefs. Focus remained on malevolent magic, and the diabolical pact was rarely introduced until after the verdict, when torture was initiated. To the Roman Inquisition, the pact with the devil, namely the implicit pact, was crucial when sentencing the illiterate villagers, since it made it possible to incorporate the offender into a learned theological system of ideas.     

The rock art of the Côa valley,Portugal: Significance,conservation and management

Abstract

The Côa river valley is the largest open-air Palaeolithic art site currently known. Some 150 decorated panels have already been found, spread along 17km. The whole complex would have been submerged under 100m of water if construction of the large Foz Côa dam, begun in 1992, had been allowed to continue. The dam project was halted in 1995 and a 200km² archaeological park is being established in this area, which is now legally protected at the highest level as a National Monument. Public access to selected sites is organized through four-wheel drive. tours of groups of eight people accompanied by guides appropriately trained in archaeology and rock art studies. Visitor Centres have been set up in restored traditional houses located in the villages around the periphery of the park. A Museum of Rock Art and Archaeology and associated research facilities is to be established at the site of the now abandoned dam.

The idea of peace in the West, 500–1150

Most of the numerous peace traditions of the early middle ages developed within a framework of three dimensions: monastic, ecclesiastical, imperial. But after 1150 the equilibrium among these three views of peace became upset. The pax ecclesiae and the imperial peace were channeled into papal jurisdiction and the public peace of the lay powers. The monastic peace began to lose its influence upon society at large.     

Did Waldegrave Work? The Impact of Open Government upon British History

The Impact of the waldegrave Initiative on Open Government uponBritish History is examined and placed within the wider frameworkof changes in Whitehall, which might be interpreted as a shifttowards transparency, or alternatively towards more sophisticated‘information control’. The areas of intelligencehistory, nuclear history and international history are examinedin detail and used to suggest that while their broad contoursremain largely unchanged, specific subjects that were once inaccessiblecan now be tackled. The mundane nature of some of the materialhitherto withheld for exceptional periods sheds light not onlyon the period that it documents, but also on the absurd andfantastical secrecy of the government in the 1980s, which continuedto keep eighteenth century records under lock and key, claimingtheir continued sensitivity. The workaday world of the DepartmentalRecord Officer is considered and found to be suffering badlyfrom the strains of under-resourcing The significant problemsthat are identified here, it is argued, will be exacerbatedby the arrival of Freedom of Information Legislation     

Tortuosity or aneurysm? The palaeopathology of some abnormalities of the vertebral artery

The anatomy of the vertebral artery (VA) and two pathological conditions which affect it—tortuosity and aneurysm—are described. The changes which these lesions produce in the cervical vertebrae are also described and we present two cases in which these changes have been found. One case is of a female aged at least 45 years at the time of death from a 15th century medieval cemetery site in Britain with what we consider to be tortuosity of the VA. The second case is of a male aged between 25 and 35 years at the time of death from a Coffin period site in Japan, dating to ca 1600 years BP. The changes in this skeleton are considered to be more in keeping with a diagnosis of aneurysm of the VA. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

The winter anomaly in the ionospheric D-region—some numerical calculations

This paper reports on results of numerical calculations for conditions under which the anomalously high absorption of radio waves appears and disappears at middle atmosphere heights, having characteristic time constants of about 24 h. In the calculations we have solved a system of equations which are self-consistent in a one-dimensional approximation and govern the temperature and neutral and ion composition behaviour in the height range 40–150 km. The values of the turbulent transfer coefficient and turbulent energy dissipation rate were calculated for the case of the anomalous absorption commencement, using experimental data pertaining to the vertical structure of the wind and temperature field. The results derived from numerical calculations involving evidence of turbulent processes were used to interpret some characteristic properties of neutral and charged particles, temperature and densities for day-time conditions with anomalously high absorption. The lack of experimental data on winds and temperature throughout the height range under study for the dates with normal absorption forced us to use indirect measurements in making assumptions about the vertical profile of the turbulent transfer coefficient and the values of the turbulent dissipation rate. The results thus obtained agree with measurements of electron density, temperature and hydroxyl emission intensity (the hydrogen content decreases as the conditions change from anomalous to normal). There are, however, discrepancies between calculated and measured atomic oxygen densities.

The European Union—a Reflection: The Theological Challenge

Abstract

The advisor on religious affairs of the European Commission's President recently suggested the need for a European political theology. He was acknowledging Christianity's past impact on European culture. He was also intimating that a creative Christian contribution to the making of Europe's future might partly depend upon some systematic theologically informed reflection upon the nature of the challenges which the continent currently confronts. This paper does not purport to supply such a theology which, by the nature of things, must be the fruit of a long-term collaborative exercise. It does, however, seek to provide a few pointers that might become the subject of further discussion. Following clues provided by Vatican II we may seek to discern some of those "signs of the times" which might disclose the issues at stake and which, in the light of general Christian understandings, may ultimately provide some guides for subsequent action.
