This article focuses on the effects of the earthquake which struck the Abruzzo region (Central Italy) on April 6, 2009, causing considerable damage to many ancient buildings, particularly churches. During the emergency after the earthquake, many churches and other historical monuments (towers, city walls, large town houses, etc.) were surveyed, according to first-level damage survey forms for Cultural Heritage buildings, by multidisciplinary working groups composed of experts from several Italian institutions (Universities, Ministry for Cultural Heritage, Fire Brigade, etc.). This article presents a statistical study on the information collected by the University of Padova during the surveys, which was later inserted and organized in a database, and illustrates data on damage assessment of the buildings in question. It also presents an intuitive overview of the seismic effects on several churches, allowing not only better understanding of the response of these structures to this particular earthquake, but also correlating data on it with its effects on the churches.  相似文献

This is a reconnaissance report on the damage to bridges during the 2008 Wenchuan, China, earthquake. Site investigation was conducted by the authors on August 10–14, 2008. Presented is a detailed discussion of the damage to 12 bridges as well as possible damage mechanisms. Characteristics of two near-field ground accelerations and Chinese seismic bridge design practices are also presented. An investigation of the damage finds insufficient intensity of seismic design force, inadequate structural detailing for enhancing the ductility capacity, and an absence of unseating prevention devices.

A statistical procedure, called discriminant analysis, is used to develop a model for the preliminary assessment of the seismic vulnerability of low- to medium-rise (2-7 storey) reinforced concrete buildings. The earthquake damage data compiled in Düzce province after the 12 November 1999 Düzce earthquake formed the damage database. Number of storeys, minimum normalised lateral stiffness index, minimum normalised lateral strength index, normalised redundancy score, soft storey index and overhang ratio are selected as the basic damage inducing variables. Two discriminant functions are derived in terms of these variables considering immediate occupancy and life safety performance levels. In the proposed preliminary seismic vulnerability assessment model, the discri-minant scores obtained from these two discriminant functions are combined in an optimal way and axe used to classify existing buildings as “safe”, “unsafe” and “requires further evaluation”. The optimality criterion imposed into the model is the minimisation of the misclassification rate of damage states causing collapse. The validity of the proposed model is checked by using the seismic damage data associated with recent earthquakes that occurred in Turkey. The consistency between the observed damage distribution and the predictions of the proposed model supports the effectiveness of the proposed model.  相似文献

Different relations have been represented for the local damage index of structures to date, while the same application is defined for them as can be an indicator of relative sustained damage by the components or stories. Since different force-resisting systems subjected to the ground motions can behave differently, some well-known story damage indices are evaluated for the reinforced concrete frames with regards to their operation during nonlinear time history analysis. Two general concepts of story damage determination are selected for this purpose. SDI is a modal-based story damage index, which is calculated by the modal frequency and mode shapes. The behavior of this local index is evaluated during the seismic excitations. The results were compared with Park-Ang and modal flexibility story damage indices. Based on analytical study on seismic responses of some RC frames subjected to a suit of earthquake records a new story damage index has been developed. It has been derived from a simple global damage equation (softening index) using a normalized ratio of inelastic story shear to its drift. A procedure is recommended to use the proposed equation without any requirement to perform nonlinear dynamic analysis, which can significantly reduce the computational efforts. Distribution of the new represented SDI along the structural height shows a good agreement with damaged state of the RC frames after seismic excitations.  相似文献

Seismic bridge design codes require that bridge piers designed according to prescribed design rules should attain specified multiple seismic performance objectives. However, design codes do not explicitly require checking the attainment of specified performance objectives for designed bridge piers. In this article, seismic performance levels have been correlated with engineering damage parameters. A checking method for multiple seismic performance objectives of bridge piers has been outlined and validated with experimental results. The application of the method has been demonstrated by checking the performance of a bridge pier designed according to a code provision for a wide range earthquake ground motions.  相似文献

The unexpected damages in structures during severe earthquakes have been reported frequently so far. In this study, the damage-based inelastic behavior of special moment resisting frame (SMRF) structures designed according to the new versions of general earthquake loading codes (International building code [IBC] 2012 & American Society of Civil Engineers [ASCE] 7-2010) and seismic design references (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program [NEHRP] 2009 & Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA] P-750) has been investigated. The final results presented based on distinctive shear and flexural failure modes show that a non-uniform distribution of severe damage in structural height occurs during design level seismic excitations. Also it is observed that the shear and flexural damages are more critical in short and tall MRF structures, respectively.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The paper analyzes the static behavior and the seismic vulnerability of the “San Francesco ad Alto” building in Ancona (Italy), which is currently used as a Regional Headquarter of the Marche Region by the Italian Army and was formerly a monastery. The global static structural behavior and the dynamic properties have been evaluated using the Finite Element modeling technique, in which the nonlinear behavior of masonry has been taken into account by proper constitutive laws. The concepts of homogenized material and smeared cracking are used to evaluate the capacity of the monastery to withstand lateral loads together with the expected demands resulting from seismic actions (N2 method), using a nonlinear static analysis (pushover). The comparison of seismic demand and capacity confirms the susceptibility of these types of buildings to extensive damage and collapse, as frequently observed in similar buildings. This paper aims to point out that advanced numerical analyses can offer significant information on the understanding of the actual structural behavior of historical buildings. It is believed that the methodology and the overall conclusions of this case study are valid for many historical monasteries in Europe.  相似文献

Due to lack of investigation on nonlinear seismic behavior of cable-stayed bridges under strong earthquake excitation, the concrete towers, as the main gravity-carrying component, are usually required to remain nearly elastic. However, in order to achieve this high seismic performance objective, the reinforcement ratio of the tower legs and the tower struts need to be greatly increased in addition to its static loading requirement. To study the potential plastic region and possible failure mode of the cable-stayed bridge, a 1/20-scale full bridge model from a typical medium span concrete cable-stayed bridge was designed, constructed and tested on 4 linear shake tables using a site specific artificial wave in the transverse direction. Test results showed that the damage characteristics of the bridge model were as follows: (1) the severe damage was observed at the upper strut, with several steel bars fractured at both ends; (2) the repairable damage was observed at tower legs at the bottom and the middle part, with concrete cover spalling and exposure of steel bars; (3) the minimal damage was observed at the lower strut and the both sides of the side bents, with only slightly concrete spalling; and (4) no damage was observed at the auxiliary bents, the superstructure and the cables. Numerical results and test results were further compared and showed good agreement in low amplitudes of excitations. The test also proved that the bridge system was stable in flexural failure of upper struts, and had the negligible residual displacement subjected to high amplitudes of excitations.  相似文献

Four Italian cases from central Apennines and central-eastern Alps show how the use of archaeoseismology and paleoseismological investigations on deformed archaeological remains may improve the knowledge on long-term seismicity. In the Fucino Plain (central Apennines), the displacement of a Roman canal (built during the lst-2nd century AD) was caused by the movement of one of the active faults affecting the basin. The paleoseismological analysis and available archaeological data permitted to date the event at the 5th-6th century AD and to hypothesise that this earthquake was also responsible for significant damage to the Colosseum in Rome shortly before 508 AD. At the Egna site (Bolzano province, northern Italy), the displacement of a Roman building has been paleoseismologically investigated. It probably resulted from surface faulting, thus permitting to hypothesise the occurrence of strong earthquakes in an area for which seismicity does not show significant historical earthquakes. In the Sulmona Plain (central Apennines) the occurrence of a strong event around the middle of the 2nd century AD is testified by ah epigraph. Widespread evidence of building, collapses and abandonments characterise a number of archaeologically investigated sites and confirm the age of occurrence inferred from the epigraph. In the Trento area (northern Italy), evidence of earthquake-induced damage to medieval buildings suggests that the earthquake which affected northern Italy in 1117 may have been responsible for significant damage also in the Adige Valley. Gained experience indicates that in areas where historical research does not contribute significantly to the knowledge of the effects of strong earthquakes, the use of archaeological evidence of past earthquakes may be a valuable tool to obtain information on the historical seismicity related to moderate-large magnitude events.  相似文献

The assessment of human or economic losses due to single events (scenario) may effectively support decision makers in the development of important risk mitigation actions. The study presented herein sheds light on several problems and limitations in the current practice of scenario loss modeling, such as: the number of simulations required to achieve convergence; epistemic and aleatory uncertainty in the ground motion prediction and vulnerability models; and consideration of the earthquake rupture geometry. These issues are investigated using the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (Portugal), and it has been observed that distinct assumptions in the loss modeling can lead to considerably different results. The findings of this study are also pertinent for probabilistic seismic risk analyses in which a large number of stochastically generated events are employed to assess probabilistic losses.  相似文献

The Thabeikkyin earthquake (moment magnitude scale of 6.8) occurred on November 11, 2012; its epicenter was located 25 km from Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Region, Myanmar. Many buildings were damaged severely during the earthquake. In this study, damage patterns of brick-nogging buildings were firstly developed, and damage grades were characterized to allow for easy classification of the damaged buildings. The damaged data of all building types in the surveyed areas were collected by classifying the four damage levels as no damage, slight damage, moderate damage, and heavy damage. To develop the damage patterns of brick-nogging buildings, damage categories were arranged into three damage grades (slight, moderate, and heavy damage). Secondly, a questionnaire survey was conducted to calculate the seismic intensities of the affected areas. Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik (MSK) seismic intensities for the surveyed areas were estimated by analyzing the questionnaire survey responses. Finally, fragility curves for brick-nogging buildings were constructed using the estimated seismic intensities from the survey responses combined with the damage levels. These fragility curves may be useful to assess damage to brick-nogging buildings and to predict the number of damaged buildings in future earthquakes.  相似文献

This article proposes a damage index for the seismic analysis of Reinforced Concrete members using the hysteretic energy dissipated by a structural member and a drift ratio related to failure in the structure. The index was calibrated against observed damage in laboratory tests of 76 RC column units under various protocols. Values obtained in this calibration had acceptable agreement with the levels of damage observed in the test specimens. An analysis of the parameters involved in the definition of the proposed damage index shows the importance of displacement history in the drift ratio capacity of structures.  相似文献

Abstract

A destructive earthquake of magnitude 7.3, occurring near Haicheng, Liaoning Province, China on 4 February 1975, was forecast successfully. Many lives were saved by an evacuation warning issued several hours prior to its occurrence. By contrast, another earthquake of magnitude 7.5, hitting the Tangshan area, Hopei Province on 28 July 1976, does not seem to have been predicted. It is believed that many thousands of lives were lost there although no official announcement was ever made about the damage or loss of life. These two Chinese earthquake indicate exactly the present status of prediction. Pre-earthquake indicators are manifold; they are land deformation, seismic activity, seismic wave velocity, changes in geomagnetic and geoelectric fields a well as variations in earth resistivity, gravity, underground water and so forth. Monitoring and analysis of precursory indicators have led us to conclude that there are at least two kinds. The logarithmic time of a long-term precursor is proportional to the magnitude of main shock. It amounts to seven-eight years for a magnitude 7 earthquake and 40–50 days for a magnitude 5 earthquake. Furthermore, indicators having a precursor time of several hours can sometimes be observed. Combining these precur or with periodicity of large shock a apparent from historical record and the accumulation of crustal strain as monitored by repeated geodetic surveys, allows a certain degree of earthquake prediction. These indicators seem to be supplemented by geophysical precursors of another kind and by specific anomalous animal behaviour. Even when a fairly accurate prediction of a damaging earthquake can be achieved, it will be no easy matter to issue a warning to the public because of the anticipated social unrest. Economic loss due to a warning may even exceed the damage caused by the earthquake itself, although many lives will certainly be saved by an accurate prediction.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The seismic vulnerability assessment of historical UnReinforced Masonry (URM) buildings is a very complex task since it is strongly related to a great variety both of geometrical layouts and of masonry mechanical characteristics. In this article, some results of a Catania University research project, denomined “FIR 2014”, focused on the seismic vulnerability estimation of historical buildings, built in Catania after the 1963 earthquake, are presented. First, a detailed typological analysis of the considered urban fabric, characterized by typical residential masonry buildings, has been performed. Such analysis allowed recognizing an elementary structural modulus, which has been studied according to different geometrical layouts representative of isolated or aggregate buildings. The results of nonlinear static analyses, performed by applying an innovative macro-element approach, allowed for the assessment the seismic vulnerability of typical URM buildings coherently to the Italian seismic code. The adopted macro-element strategy for the seismic assessment of aggregate masonry buildings, although related to a specific historical center, may be applied to similar urban fabrics and can also be used for the calibration and validation of fast seismic assessment strategies, particularly useful for the evaluation of the seismic risk at urban scale.  相似文献

This paper presents a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Tehran, the capital of Iran. Two maps have been prepared to indicate the earthquake hazard of Tehran and its vicinity in the form of iso-acceleration contour lines. They display the probabilistic estimate of Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) over bedrock for the return periods of 475 and 950 years. Tehran is a densely populated metropolitan in which more than 10 million people live. Many destructive earthquakes happened in Iran in the last centuries. It comes from historical references that at least 6 times, Tehran has been destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes. The oldest one happened in the 4th century BC. A collected catalogue, containing both historical and instrumental events and covering the period from the 4th century BC to 1999 is then used. Seismic sources are modelled and recurrence relationship is established. For this purpose the method proposed by Kijko [2000] was employed considering uncertainty in magnitude and incomplete earthquake catalogue. The calculations were performed using the logic tree method and three weighted attenuation relationships; Ramazi [1999], 0.4, Ambraseys and Bommer [1991], 0.35, and Sarma and Srbulov [1996], 0.25. Seismic hazard assessment is then carried out for 12×11 grid points using SEISRISK III. Finally, two seismic hazard maps of the studied area based on Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) over bedrock for 10% probability of exceedance in two life cycles of 50 and 100 years are presented. The results showed that the PGA ranges from 0.27(g) to 0.46(g) for a return period of 475 years and from 0.33(g) to 0.55(g) for a return period of 950 years. Since population is very dense in Tehran and vulnerability of buildings is high, the risk of future earthquakes will be very significant.  相似文献

This article examines the use of archaeological evidence for the assessment of historical earthquakes in the Eastern Mediterranean region and Middle East, long before the advent of modern seismology. We ask the questions when and where have large earthquakes happened in the past? How can this evidence contribute to our scientific understanding of earthquake activity? Is it possible on literary and archaeological grounds to distinguish between earthquake damage and damage from other causes? It is found that archaeological evidence for an earthquake is not always clear or unambiguous and that there is a need for collaboration between archaeologists, historians, geologists, engineering seismologists and workers in other disciplines, to evaluate the traces of earthquakes in excavations, both for understanding their effects at the site and for the information they can provide about the nature of the earthquake implicated.  相似文献

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 (M b ) occurred in west-central part of Colombia on January 25, 1999. This earthquake is officially called Quindio Earthquake from the name of the most affected province. The earthquake caused disastrous damage to a large number of buildings resulting in significant casualties. In Armenia City and its neighbouring villages close to the epicentre over 1000 people were killed by the earthquake and the total monetary loss reached US$ 2 billion. Armenia City, which has an approximate population of 280 000 people, apparently suffered the worst in terms of casualties and damage to the buildings.

The present paper focuses on the causes of damage to houses and buildings in Armenia City. First, the evolution of the urban area of the city was investigated using historical features available maps from each era. Then a correlation between buildings damage and topographical features of the city was studied. The effects of geological features and amplification of ground motion were also investigated.  相似文献
