The hourly values of the ionosonde parameters foEs and fbEs for times near mid-day have been examined over three solar cycles 1947–82. The daily parameters were studied for two southern hemisphere stations: Christchurch (temperate zone) (−43°.6′ geographic, −48°.1′ geomagnetic) and Rarotonga (subtropical) (−21°.2′ geographic, −20°.7′ geomagnetic). The data represent the longest such analyzed sporadi-E record in the literature. The seasonal variations of per cent occurrence of f0Es ⩾ 5 MHz and fbEs ⩾ 4 MHz for both stations show no sunspot dependence, strong activity in local summer and, in the case of Christchurch, minor enhancements in local winter. Long-term fbEs occurrence is closely associated with Zurich sunspot number Rz (correlation coefficients 0.93 for Christchurch and 0.76 for Rarotonga) with all seasons, showing the same in-phase Rz control for both stations. Long-term foEs occurrence for both stations and for all seasons exhibits no dependence on Rz. There is evidence of a 6 year period in seasonal foEs activity for Rarotonga. The data show a large and unexplained systematic decrease in foEs occurrence for both stations and for all seasons by a factor of about 3 from 1947 to 1982.  相似文献

Correlative evidence accumulating since 1926 suggests that there must be some physical coupling mechanism between solar activity and thunderstorm occurrence in middle to high latitudes. Such a link may be provided by alteration of atmospheric electric parameters through the influence of cosmic ray decreases and/or high-energy solar protons associated with active solar events. Galactic cosmic ray decreases tend to enhance the electric field at low heights. The protons produce excess ionization near and above 20km, greatly increasing the atmospheric conductivity and possibly lowering the height of the electrosphere. Consequent effects near the solar proton cut-off latitude also lead to an enhancement of the atmospheric electric field near the surface. If appropriate meteorological conditions (warm moist air with updrafts) exist or develop during a solar event, the atmospheric electric field enhancement may be sufficient to trigger thunderstorm development. The suggested mechanism appears plausible enough to warrant a co-ordinated experimental effort involving satellite balloon and ground-based measurements of the possible forcing functions (solar protons and cosmic rays) and the responding atmospheric electrical and ionic species' characteristics.  相似文献

The Yohkoh satellite, launched 31 August 1991, observes solar X-rays and γ-rays with four instruments. This paper briefly introduces Yohkoh, emphasizing its recent observations of the solar corona as seen in soft X-radiation. The Yohkoh soft X-ray telescope (SXT) has a CCD sensor and a grazing-incidence mirror with greatly reduced scattering in comparison with earlier telescopes of this type. With these and other advantages it provides the most sensitive and detailed views of the X-ray emission corona. Long exposures regularly show detectable emission from heights exceeding one solar radius above the photosphere. The main observational objectives of SXT are in flare research, but observations of other coronal structures are equally significant. We anticipate important applications of the Yohkoh/SXT data in defining physical parameters of the corona during the Ulysses and SOHO observations of the solar wind and corona. This instrument was recently used to make unique X-ray observations of a transit of Mercury.  相似文献

Abstract

Bones (diaphyses) have epiphyses that fuse at a given age. This indicates if the animal was older or younger than the age of fusion for that specific epiphysis at death. In this short contribution, we present a new methodology to calculate survival/mortality of cattle on the basis of epiphysial fusion. We used cattle bones, excavated in two Norwegian cities, Oslo and Trondheim, to calculate survival and changes in mortality for cattle during the period from AD1000 to AD1624. This is based on standard logistic regression models, using a complementary log–log link and the log of age of fusion of the epiphyses as independent variable, an approach recognised as a ‘Weibull-model for current-status-data’. Mortality of cattle was higher in the city of Trondheim than in Oslo. For both cities the mortality of cattle decreased, and the life-span increased, during the period from the AD1000 until AD1350. In Oslo, mortality after 1350 was similar to that between 1150 and 1250, while in Trondheim, it was similar to the mortality in the period from 1250 to 1350. We have shown that mortality curves can be calculated using epiphysial fusion data, and using this approach have demonstrated a change in cattle mortality which corresponds to significant historic events during the medieval period.  相似文献

Radiosonde data spanning 25 yr have been subjected to superposed epoch analysis using as key days those days with major solar flares. A clear decrease in atmospheric temperature is observed three days after the key day at Alice Springs. Monte Carlo tests and the Sign Test confirm the significance of this result. Similar effects are observed at other locations but they are not as clear. The effect is also clearer if winter months are excluded. The worldwide tendency for these relationships to be clearest in January February lends support to suggested mechanisms involving the global electric field.  相似文献

In November and December 1979 the solar 10.7 cm radio flux density, sunspot number, X-ray flux and EUV flux were high and very variable. The day-to-day variations of noon F2-layer height and Elayer electron density at three ionosonde stations (Slough, Port Stanley and Huancayo) are found to be well correlated with the day-to-day variations of solar activity. The short-term E- and F-layer variations are consistent with those derived from longer-term studies.  相似文献

Hourly values of IEC and of f0F2 (critical frequency) for a low latitude station, Hawaii (21.2°N, 157.7°W), during the solar maxima (1969 and 1981) and minima (1965 and 1985) years of two consecutive solar cycles, 20 and 21, are used to study the day to day variabilities of the ionospheric parameters IEC and NP. It is found that there is good correspondence in the day to day variations of IEC and NP from one solar cycle to the other for both solar maximum and minimum years in the two solar cycles. Depending on solar phase and season, while the mean daytime IEC and NP variations range from about 20% to 35%, the mean night time values vary from about 25% to 60%. The mean daytime variations in NP for the solar minimum phase are remarkably higher in all the three seasons compared to the solar maximum phase. However, no such increase is observed in the mean daytime IEC variations, indicating the highly variable nature of the daytime ionospheric F region compared to the topside during solar minimum for this low latitude station. The winter night time IEC also seems to be a relatively stable parameter during the solar minimum. The short term day to day variabilities of the day time peak values of IEC and NP (ie IECmax and NPmax) are not closely associated with the variations in F10.7 solar flux. Contrary to the common expectation, the variabilities in both the parameters, particularly in NPmax, are somewhat reduced during the solar maximum (when the variability in F10.7 solar flux is much higher compared to the solar minimum) which is more evident in the stronger 21 solar cycle. A larger number of significant components are seen in the spectra of the percentage variation of both IECmax and NPmax during both solar phases of the two solar cycles compared to the corresponding F10.7 solar flux spectra. The number of additional components for both the parameters with periods less than 15 days are more for the low solar activity years than for the solar maximum years.  相似文献

The effects of the solar eclipse of 26 February 1979 on the ionosphere were measured using differential Doppler techniques. Nayy navigation satellite passes were monitored at 12 sites located across the North American continent. These data yield a measurement of the vertical columnar electron content along a north-south line. Different sites monitoring the same pass provide simultaneous observations of ionospheric variations along different longitude lines. Two satellite passes occurred during or just after the eclipse. These data show a shoulderjust northward of the umbra region and a trough just behind the umbra containing large horizontal gradients. This sharp trough recovered quickly with a half-life of about 10 min.  相似文献

We recorded shadow bands just before and just after the total phase of the solar eclipse of 3 November 1994. The recordings were made using two broad-band silicon photodiodes separated by 100 mm. They were mounted on a plate that faced the eclipsed Sun, which was at an altitude of 32.4° as seen from our observing site 4500 m above sea level between Putre and Lake Chungara in northern Chile. The irradiance fluctuations associated with the shadow bands were around 0.008 W m−2 rms on a background of about 2–8 W m−2. The cross-correlation function indicates that the shadow bands were moving at a speed of about 1.8 m s−1 perpendicular to their extent. The power spectral density functions are in accord with the shadow band theory of Codona (1986). We carried out a similar experiment in Baja California during the eclipse of 11 July 1991. In spite of teh considerable differences between the two circumstances, our results on the two occasions are broadly similar.  相似文献

This statistical correlation study is based on two upper mesospheric temperature data sets for the region around 90 km, on the phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and on the solar 10.7-cm radiation. The temperatures are measurements from passive OH1-spectrometers and lidar sounding experiments carried out between 1980 and 1988 at geographic latitudes between 50°N and 70° N. An anticorrelation exists betwen the 10.7-cm flux and the temperatures. Two different types of significance tests were used to check the confidence level of the correlation. The anti-correlation is highly significant (confidence ⪢ 99.99%) for latitudes around 50°N if the QBO is in its east phase and for the spring/summer temperatures. The anti-correlation is not significant for the QBO west phase and for fall/winter temperatures (confidence < 95%). For higher latitudes, around 79°N, no significant correlation was found.  相似文献

From data for the absorption of radio waves at oblique incidence in Lagos, and at vertical incidence at Colombo, the seasonal variation of absorption at the two sites are examined. It is shown that, if subsolar absorption be assumed to depend upon sunspot number, the cos X law gives the same index for both the diurnal and the seasonal variation of absorption.  相似文献

In this paper 16 geomagnetic storms in 1968–1978 recorded at 8 magnetic observatories located from polar to equatorial regions in the λ= 120°E longitudinal zone and its vicinity have been analysed. The horizontal component H traces of 27 h intervals have been sampled once every 1.5 min. The time sequences of the data thus obtained have been processed by the method of digital filtering and maximum entropy spectral analysis (MESA).The results of the analysis are compared with the associated solar wind parameters. It confirms that the geomagnetic disturbances are controlled by the solar wind in several ways, i.e. geomagnetic disturbances respond differently to various solar wind parameters or to the different ranges of them. The north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz., the IMF latitude θ and the solar wind velocity V play the most important part in inducing geomagnetic storms.  相似文献

Variations of ionospheric Sq electric currents and fields caused by changes in electric conductivity due to changes in solar activity are studied using the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model. Calculations are made for R (sunspot number) = 35 and 200 on the assumption of constant (1, −2)mode tidal winds. It is shown that electric fields grow when solar activity is high, because the ratio of the conductivity in the F-region to that in the E-region increases. Currents in the F-region become stronger than those in the E-region, and nocturnal currents are not negligible when solar activity becomes high. F-region currents also play an important role in the westward currents on the high latitude side of the current vortex. The calculated geomagneticH component at the equator has a depression around 1600 LT for R = 35, while it decreases smoothly from 1100 LT to 1900 LT for R = 200. This difference is consistent with the observed geomagnetic field variation. The ratio of total Sq currents obtained by our simulation is about 3.5, which is a little larger than is found in the observed results.  相似文献

Observations by the HF Doppier technique of the ionospheric effects of the 16 February 1980 solar eclipse in Africa are presented. Some oscillations which are detected at two stations can be attributed to a travelling coherent structure. Its characteristics are consistent with a gravity wave generated by the eclipse.  相似文献

Measurements of atmospheric electric potential gradient, conductivity of both polarities and space charge at the ground surface at Pune during the partial solar eclipse of 18 March 1988 have been made. In spite of no appreciable change in atmospheric temperature at the ground surface, all the atmospheric electric parameters showed remarkable changes during the period of eclipse. Results do not support any vertical transport of charge, either by conduction or by convection, near to the ground surface.  相似文献

Faraday rotation data obtained at Delhi, Kurukshetra, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Waltair, Nagpur and Calcutta during the total solar eclipse of 16 February 1980 and at Delhi during the total solar eclipse of 31 July 1981 have been analysed to detect the gravity waves generated by a total solar eclipse as hypothesized by Chimonas and Hines (1970, J. geophys. Res. 75, 875). It has been found that gravity waves can be generated by a total solar eclipse but their detection at ionospheric heights is critically dependent on the location of the observing station in relation to the eclipse path geometry. The distance of the observing station from the eclipse path should be more than 500 km in order to detect such gravity waves.  相似文献

VLF radio signals (12.9 kHz) transmitted from Ω-Argentina (43°12′S, 65°24′W) were received in Atibaia, Brazil (23°11 'S, 46°33'W) during the total solar eclipse of 30 June 1992. The surface path of the totality crossed the VLF propagation path in the sunrise transition period causing a phase delay of 6.4 μs and an amplitude change of 1.3 dB. The ionospheric response to the Sun's obscuration was compared with the phase delays reported for several solar eclipses that occurred from 1966 to 1979. The results are mainly discussed in terms of the length of VLF propagation path affected. Some similarities between a sudden phase anomaly and a reversed eclipse effect are also raised.  相似文献
