Absorption was calculated at two height levels in the ionosphere, from different electron density profiles. The correlation between absorption and foF2 was studied. This study bears out theoretical results that riometer absorption occurs mainly in the D-layer and less in the upper parts of the ionosphere.  相似文献

Using ray tracing we investigate, on a qualitative level and in the linear approximation, the effects of medium-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (MS TIDs) arising when powerful HF radio transmitters are operated in conjunction with antenna arrays designed for ionospheric modification (heating) and for radio location of the Moon. It is shown that the HF radio wave focusing effect, arising during the movement of the MS TIDs, can give rise to a strong inhomogeneous and nonstationary modulation of the space-time distribution of the field intensity of a powerful radio transmitter both at heights near the reflection region (in heating experiments) and at the exit from the ionosphere (in radio location of the Moon). The excess of intensity over an unperturbed value for typical parameters of MS TIDs in experiments on ionospheric modification can reach values of hundreds of percent: a ‘spot’ of increased intensity of the wave field can have the size of about 1–10 km, and can move with a velocity close to the MS TID phase velocity.In the case of lunar radio location, the inhomogeneity and nonstationarity of the wave field intensity distribution at the exit from the ionosphere substantially complicates the evaluation of the corresponding distribution on the Moon's surface and the interpretation of the Moon-reflected radio signal characteristics.  相似文献

Electron densities in the D-region have been observed with EISCAT during energetic electron precipitation events. Sample results are presented which demonstrate the value of the technique in studying variations of electron density with fine temporal and spatial resolution. Different types of absorption event can be characterized in terms of the changes in the incoming electron spectrum inferred from profiles of electron density. We contrast the D-region behaviour of night- and day-time events in terms of precipitating spectrum and absorption profile. A softening of the electron spectrum during the course of a morning event is clearly seen.  相似文献

The recent development of imaging riometer techniques has enabled a range of new, interesting observations of the complex dynamics of auroral and polar radio wave absorption events. These events mostly relate to the precipitation of energetic particles, creating enhanced ionization in the D-region. However, E-region heating by large electric fields and F-region electron density enhancements may also—at times—be responsible for observable absorption effects. Observations of ionospheric radio wave absorption processes using imaging riometer techniques may provide detailed characteristics of the spatial and temporal structures of small-scale disturbance events, velocity vectors for drifting features and frequency spectra for modulated events. This presentation will give a brief summary of imaging riometer techniques and a survey of existing and planned imaging riometer installations. Furthermore, the characteristics of frequently occurring absorption event types are summarized. In a companion paper imaging riometer observations are presented for some selected absorption events.  相似文献

Samples of amplitude scintillations of the radio signal from a geostationary satellite obtained at a midlatitude station near Irkutsk were processed. For calculating the fractal dimensionalities the Grassberger and Procaccia [(1983) Physica D9, 189] algorithm was used. Results of the data processing tend to divide into two groups. One group includes those realizations for which it was possible to obtain reliable estimates of dimensionality. Three of the seven realizations considered were in this group, and the fractal dimensionalities were found to be low (3.12 4.5). The other data fall within the second group; a reliable estimate of dimensionality for them is unobtainable in terms of the method used. We suppose that this is attributable to the high dimensionality of the process. Power spectra of the signals of this group are close to those with an exponent of −2. The spectra of the signals of the first group are markedly steeper. On the basis of the data analyzed it is supposed that there exist two modes of ionospheric turbulence in midlatitudes, namely the mode with low dimensionality typical of localized turbulent processes, and the mode with high dimensionality typical of homogeneous turbulence that covers an extensive region of the ionosphere.  相似文献

Faraday rotation data obtained at Delhi, Kurukshetra, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Waltair, Nagpur and Calcutta during the total solar eclipse of 16 February 1980 and at Delhi during the total solar eclipse of 31 July 1981 have been analysed to detect the gravity waves generated by a total solar eclipse as hypothesized by Chimonas and Hines (1970, J. geophys. Res. 75, 875). It has been found that gravity waves can be generated by a total solar eclipse but their detection at ionospheric heights is critically dependent on the location of the observing station in relation to the eclipse path geometry. The distance of the observing station from the eclipse path should be more than 500 km in order to detect such gravity waves.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of the scintillation and Faraday rotation of 136 MHz radio waves radiated by the Japanese geostationary satellite ETS-2 have been studied at Kokubunji Japan during April to May, 1977.These preliminary results show that there is a close association between scintillations and the peculiar fluctuations of the Faraday rotation due to ionospheric spread F, and an empirical formula relating them is presented.Furthermore, the successive daily values of the two parameters show a close correspondence with a cross correlation coefficient of about 0.8. An unexpected result is that cross-correlation between the incidence of Es and the Faraday fluctuations on a daily bases is found to be about 0.65.  相似文献

Angles of arrival of first echoes (those directly reflected from the ionosphere) and second echoes (those twice reflected from the ionosphere with an intermediate reflection from the ground) were measured. It is easy to show that under specified conditions the off-vertical angle of arrival of the second echo ought to be twice that of the first echo. It is consistently found to be less than this for much of the time. Several possibilities are canvassed, but none provide a convincing explanation. The place on the Earth from which the second echo was reflected was nearly always the sea or flat ground. Apparently, rapid phase variations, as the tilt of the ionosphere changed, prevented recognition of the second echo by this particular radar system for echoes reflected from rough terrain.  相似文献

This paper generalizes experimental data on variations of the angles of arrival of transionospheric radio signals caused by changes in a regular ionosphere and by effects of medium-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). The data are based on radio astronomical observations of discrete sources and compact active features on the Sun as well as on angular measurements of signals from artificial Earth satellites with geostationary and circular orbits.The experimental data are interpreted through calculations of refraction corrections using a Gaussian model of a regular ionosphere disturbed by a three-dimensional travelling wave (the TID model) as well as an adaptive model of a regular ionosphere. Some possibilities of correcting refraction distortions with the use of appropriate models and ionospheric diagnostic tools are discussed.  相似文献

The main object of the campaign reported here was to compare TID characteristics obtained from two essentially different observation techniques: (1) observation of the apparent angular position shifts of Virgo A by the Nançay radioheliograph (47.33°N, 2.15°E) gave azimuths and periods of travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs); (2) differential Doppler shifts of signals from NNSS-satellites recorded simultaneously at Tours (47.35°N, 0.70°E), Nançay and Besançon (47.32°N, 5.99°E) provided azimuths and latitudinal wavelengths. Observations were made during the period 10–30 November 1987, between 6 and 12 h UT. It is found that azimuths obtained from the two techniques are consistent if sufficient averaging over wave trains is performed: averaging over several hours for radio interferometry and averaging over the whole satellite trace for the differential Doppler technique. Averaging is necessary because of (1) the intrinsic dispersion in wave azimuth, (2) the broadness of observed wave spectra and the dispersive properties of gravity waves, and (3) the spatial separation of ionospheric points for the two techniques. Good agreement between the azimuths was achieved by setting the altitude of the TIDs, which is used in the differential Doppler analysis, to about 250 km, appreciably lower than the maximum in electron density (about 350 km). The mean azimuth of observed TIDs was 12° East from South with a standard deviation of about 30°. The dominant period and horizontal wavelength of the observed TIDs were 40 min and 450 km. The East-West coherence length of the TIDs was found to be only of the order of 200 km.  相似文献

Ionospheric modification by high power radio waves and by chemical releases are combined in a theoretical study of ionospheric focused heating. The release of materials which promote electron-ion recombination creates a hole in the bottomside ionosphere. The ionospheric hole focuses high power radio waves from a ground-based transmitter to give a 20 dB or greater enhancement in power density. The intense radio beam excites atomic oxygen by collisions with accelerated electrons. Airglow from the excited oxygen provides a visible trace of the focused beam. The large increase in the intensity of the radio beam stimulates new wave-plasma interactions. Numerical simulations show that the threshold for the two-plasmon decay instability is exceeded. The interaction of the pump electromagnetic wave with the backward plasmon produces a scattered electromagnetic wave at 3/2 the pump frequency. The scattered wave provides a unique signature of the two-plasmon decay process for ground-based detection.  相似文献

A fixed frequency amplitude modulated transmission was reflected from the ionosphere and changes in the group path, phase path, signal amplitude and directions of arrival of this transmission caused by travelling ionospheric disturbances were measured. These measurements enabled approximate determinations of the horizontal wavelength, period and horizontal phase velocity of the disturbances, which were compared with the theory of disturbances for atmospheric waves. A simple model is proposed to explain the phase relationships between the TIDs observed in the group and phase paths, and the faster decrease in power of the phase path than the other measured parameters indicated by spectral analysis.  相似文献

The method of Hibberd is used to study the variability of ionospheric dynamo currents from day to day, with solar rotation and with the solar cycle. The method eliminates many sources of disturbance by using the difference of H at two magnetic observatories having the same longitude but different latitudes. In this way, a measure of the strength of the ionospheric currents can be obtained almost every day, even during magnetically disturbed periods. It is concluded that the currents are produced partly by tidal modes driven by in situ heating in the thermosphere, and that variations in the amplitude of these modes are mainly responsible for the solar rotation and the solar cycle effects which are observed. There are also random day-to-day changes, uncorrelated from one day to the next, and these suggest that upward propagating tidal modes are also important in driving the currents.  相似文献

The enduring centrality of the US alliance explains much—probably almost all you need to know—about the unbroken consensus of the Australian polity. Afghanistan was an example of the Australian alliance addiction, similar to Vietnam. As with Vietnam, the Australian military left Afghanistan believing it won its bit of the war, even if the Afghanistan war is judged a disaster. As Australia heads home it finds the USA pivoting in its direction; with all the similarities that can be drawn between Vietnam and Afghanistan, this post-war alliance effect is a huge difference between the two conflicts.  相似文献

Initially, this paper considers earlier experimental results (some of them hitherto unpublished) obtained by making observations on signals returning from mid-latitude spread-F irregularities. These results suggest associations between spread-F irregularities and nighttime travelling ionospheric disturbances. Statistical analyses are then described which investigate the spread-F phenomenon at a number of mid-latitude stations with approximately the same latitudes but distributed over a range of longitudes. An east-west movement of spread-F irregularities is revealed when the occurrence at these stations is considered relative to days of enhanced occurrence at a particular station. All the experimental evidence presented in the paper supports the idea that the appearance of mid-latitude spread-F ionograms results primarily from specular reflections from relatively-large-scale structures which can be imagined as being in fact nighttime travelling ionospheric disturbances. These are, in turn, possibly related to internal gravity waves in the neutral atmosphere. It is suggested that the small-scale ionospheric structures (which are undoubtedly also present) are effective in inhibiting some of the specular reflections thus contributing to the diffuse nature of some records. This idea is quite contrary to the generally-accepted view that the spread-F traces are a direct consequence of scattering from these small-scale structures.  相似文献

Radar observations have been carried out at Aberystwyth (52.4°N, 4.1°W) during the period May–August 1990 to search for echoes analogous to the Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes commonly observed at high latitudes. Signal strength measurements in the vertical and at 12° from the vertical are used to examine the aspect sensitivity of echoes, and Doppler measurements at 6° from the vertical and in the vertical to estimate wind velocities. The observations show the presence of two types of moderately strong echoes from heights above 80 km. On most days a spectrally broad echo is observed with characteristics consistent with isotropic turbulence scatter. On certain days between mid-June and mid-July, stronger spectrally narrow echoes are observed with characteristics similar to Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes.  相似文献

The numerical synthesis of ionograms by ray-tracing in an analytic two-dimensional ionosphere is simplified by a technique which avoids the usual wastage of ray tracings. The technique is particularly suitable for obtaining ionogram sequences corresponding to a moving ionospheric disturbance. It is applied firstly to a moving tilted ionisation increase, which gives the familiar travelling-cusp records. Ionograms do not give a good measure of the vertical distribution of ionisation, and in the case considered lead to an overestimate of the horizontal size of the increase by a factor of about 2. For a travelling ionisation decrease or trough, the ionograms show an additional U-shaped trace overlapping the main trace. Calculated ionograms agree closely with some observations. It is difficult to obtain any measure of the size of the electron-density decrease; critical frequency scalings may give no indication of the passage of an intense disturbance. Similar results are obtained for a wavelike perturbation in an exponential topside ionosphere. Topside ionograms then show multiple ‘nose’ traces, following in general the curve for the unperturbed ionosphere. It is suggested that the multiple echoes frequently observed on topside ionograms may, in some cases, be due to refraction in large disturbances rather than the commonly-assumed ducting mechanism.  相似文献
