A procedure is established to evaluate the Balmer excitation rates of Hα and Hβ to produce the corresponding volume emission rates versus height, using semi-empirical range relations of protons in air. The calculations are carried out with identified ion-energy particle spectra of the dayside aurora obtained by low altitude satellites. The calculated emission intensities of Hα and Hβ indicate that they are indeed observable by ground-based optical detection. Measurements of the dayside aurora from Nordlysstasjonen in Adventdalen, Svalbard, are discussed in relation to these calculations. Periodic bursts of auroral Hα and Hβ emissions are observed in the dayside aurora by ground-based photometers and spectrometers. The mean period between proton events is found to be 10 min on average. Furthermore, it is found that when the time between successive bursts decreases, the emission ratio of Hα and Hβ fluctuates indicating a step-like behaviour in the primary initial proton energy.  相似文献

The directions of arrival of over 1300 whistlers have been measured at Sanae, Antarctica and it is shown that whistlers arriving from lower latitudes than the station predominantly come from the west. In this paper we report on the observations and discuss the possible reasons for this asymmetric distribution of arrival bearings.  相似文献

‘Trimpi’ amplitude perturbations on VLF signals received at Sanae, Antarctica, have been identified using a new computerised technique. Our survey of 1982 data, taken during magnetically disturbed times, shows that events of short duration (<25 s) constitute 60% of all events detected and that all events found are amplitude attenuations with deviations from quiescent levels ranging up to 90%. It is unusual, at Sanae, to observe the causative whistler with a Trimpi event. This, together with further evidence from Trimpi occurrence statistics, may suggest that the gyroresonant interactions responsible for some of the events occur with non-ducted whistler mode waves. A method for estimating the extent of the precipitation region is presented.  相似文献

Observations with the Poker Flat, Alaska, MST radar during and after solar proton events in 1982 and 1984 suggest that winds in the altitude range of ~ 80–90 km were altered as a consequence of the influx of energetic charged particles and large electric fields at high latitudes. The atmospheric changes accompanying these events appear to result in a reduction of the semidiurnal tide and an enhancement in the diurnal tide. It is suggested that these changes could result from the alteration of the local tidal heating distribution produced by the particle precipitation, either through changes in the local ozone distribution or as a result of mesospheric Joule heating.  相似文献

The characteristics of extremely high-latitude dayside auroras are examined by using auroral TV data obtained at Godhavn, Greenland, and simultaneous DMSP particle data. Two different kinds of aurora are found near the pre-noon sector, namely (1) the polar arc: this aurora is observed during quiet periods and originates from the dayside region. It is related to about 100 eV electron precipitation or less, and (2) the polar corona: this aurora is observed during disturbed periods and the appearence latitute of this aurora is confined within a certain region about 70–80° MLAT. It is related to a few hundred eV electrons. These results suggest that the origin of the polar arc seems to be the plasma mantle or low-latitude boundary layer, and the origin of the polar corona seems to be the low-latitude boundary layer or Boundary Plasma Sheet.  相似文献

IPS Radio and Space Services (IPS) commissioned a new radiospectrograph in May 1992. Located at Culgoora, near Narrabri, in northwest NSW, it replaces a radiospectrograph constructed by the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics in 1966. In conducting this upgrade, IPS has made use of commercially available hardware to replace all of the original instrument except its antennae. An important aspect of the new instrument is the acquisition of data in digital form. This, together with software written by IPS staff, permits a variety of data analysis techniques that were not previously possible.This paper demonstrates the capabilities of the new instrument by presenting some of the radiospectrograms obtained during the past twelve months. Each is accompanied by a short discussion of its salient features. Some of the advanced functions of the digital display software, such as automated shock speed estimation, are also outlined.  相似文献

We describe some of the highlights of the incoherent scatter observations made at Jicamarca in the 1960s. Some of the observations were then and are still now unique and worthy of further study. Of particular note are (1) a long series of electron density measurements extending to altitudes as high as 10,000 km on a few occasions, (2) density and temperature observations during a total solar eclipse, (3) temperature and composition measurements extending past the O+-H+ transition region, and (4) observations of the ion gyro resonance effect for protons.  相似文献

Coordinated optical observations were performed from the poleward side of the midnight auroral oval. Height measurements of the auroral emissions at 4278, 5577 and 6300 Å, as well as their intensity ratios in the poleward expanded auroral substorm, have been carried out. The findings indicate a significantly softened electron spectrum compared with similar data from the equatorward part of this substorm. Typical values for the poleward expanded aurora are 300 eV and lower, while keV particles dominate the auroras at 10° lower latitudes. Emission altitudes and spectral characteristics are comparable to the transient burst emissions frequently observed from the same site in the post-noon sector, i.e. within the cusp.The 6300 Å atomic oxygen emission is used as a tracer of F-region wind and temperature. Interferometer observations show that there exists a prevailing crosspolar antisunward wind, increasing with geomagnetic activity to several hundred m s−1. The temperature shows an increase of 150 K associated with high geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

A sample calculation is presented of K-shell X-ray emission resulting from energetic proton precipitation into the upper atmosphere. It is found that intense fluxes of K-shell X-rays at low satellite altitudes (450 nautical miles) can result from observed fluxes of precipitating protons.  相似文献

High resolution incoherent-scatter observations of E-region thin (1–3 km) metallic ion layers are presented. Data were collected during three different periods from August 1990 to August 1991, in three different experimental modes. First, the antenna was directed vertically and the entire duty cycle was devoted to Barker coded multi-pulse [Zamlutti (1980) J. atmos. terr. Phys.42, 975–982] measurements to determine the densities and temperatures in the E-region with 300 m resolution. The second experiment measured the F-region electric field as well as the high resolution E-region densities. For the third experiment the antenna was scanned magnetic north-south while only the E-region densities were measured. The experiments were carried out on 16 different nights for a period of 4 h each night at a time near magnetic midnight. Thin ionization layers were observed on 12 of the 16 nights. The first experiment demonstrated that the thin layers are composed of a significant fraction of heavy metallic ions; assuming the layers are composed of a mixture of Fe+ and Mg+ a composition estimate of 63% Fe+ was obtained in one example. The second experiment investigated the relationship between the direction of the electric field and the presence of the thin layers. In these observations thin layers were only present when the electric field was pointed in the magnetic north-west or south-west quadrants, most frequently when the field was near magnetic west. Correlation between layer altitude and field direction was also observed, layers occurring at higher altitudes for fields directed in the north-west, and lower altitudes for fields directed to the south-west. The observations are compatible with the electric field mechanism for thin ionization layer formation. The scanning experiment showed that the layers were of a limited latitudinal extent, typically about 100 km up to a maximum of about 200 km.  相似文献

A dual coherent 50 MHz auroral radar installed at Siple Station, Antarctica, continuously monitored echo intensity and mean-Doppler velocity from 29 December 1976 until late March 1978. We describe here the experimental technique and present some statistical results including yearly averaged echooccurrence patterns and irregularity drift velocity characteristics. Our results show that:
  • 1.(1) the irregularity drifts are approximately westward (poleward electric fields) in the evening, and eastward (equatorward electric fields) in the morning following the electric field reversal in the region of the Harang discontinuity;
  • 2.(2) the Harang discontinuity under disturbed conditions (average Kp = 50) as seen by both radars is located around 2100–2300 MLT;
  • 3.(3) the relationship between the irregularity drift velocity and the actual electron drift velocity is strongly dependent on the angle between the radar beam and the earth's magnetic field, as predicted by linear theory.

From 1972 to 1975 F-region medium-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) were observed at Leicester, U.K. (52°32′N 1°8′W) by means of the HF Doppler technique. Most of the features of the disturbances previously reported in the literature are confirmed, with the exception of the apparent seasonal variation in the propagation direction. The measured wave azimuth rotates clockwise through 360° in 24 h, supporting theoretical predictions concerning the filtering effect of the neutral wind in the northern hemisphere. The most commonly observed direction of wave propagation, however, is displaced from the antiwind direction and is located at an azimuth of 130–140° relative to the wind. A periodic variation of the direction of wave propagation with respect to the anti-wind direction is evident, which may indicate that lower atmospheric winds can have a greater influence on waves at thermospheric heights than previously supposed.A synoptic survey of the data set reveals little correlation between wave occurrence and auroral processes, and it is unlikely that high-latitude sources are responsible for many of the MSTIDs observed at mid-latitudes.  相似文献

Conventional meteor radars, operating at wavelengths of around 5–15 m, are unable to detect high-altitude meteors due to the wavelength-dependent echo ceiling. It is suggested that the ‘missing mass’ in the 10−6–10−2 g range of interplanetary material is in fact a high-velocity component which is normally undetected since it ablates at high altitude. This contention is supported by previous work. In this paper we describe measurements of the heights of radio meteors (limiting magnitude about +7) at a wavelength of 150 m (frequency 2 MHz), for which the echo ceiling is above 140 km. The resultant true height distribution is found to peak at ~ 104 km, about 10 km above the peak found by conventional meteor radars. The majority of meteors are detected at or above this peak, and substantial numbers are seen right up to 140 km. It is therefore concluded that the ‘missing mass’, comprising the vast majority of the meteoric input to the atmosphere, ablates well above 100 km.  相似文献

As part of a program aimed at deriving the true influx to the Earth of small meteoroids we have measured the height distribution of radio meteors to limiting magnitude + 6 (mass ~ 1.0 mg) at a frequency of 6 MHz for the combined Daytime Arietid and Zeta Perseid showers, and also for the Eta Aquarids; these showers have widely different velocities but no substantial dependence upon velocity is apparent. The distributions peak at ~ 105 km, 10 km above the peak found using conventional VHP meteor radars and in line with observations previously made by us at 2 MHz. Instrumental limitations confine the span of heights to 84 <h <116 km, but it is notable that within this range the 6 MHz height distributions appear to be symmetric, with a swift drop-off above 105 km; this contrasts with the asymmetric 2 MHz distribution which showed a slow drop-off with many meteors to 140 km. The origin of this difference is probably due to diffusion and the finite-velocity effect, which will be considered in a subsequent paper.  相似文献

Plasma flow vectors have been derived from data recorded by the Advanced Ionospheric Sounder (operating as a Dynasonde) at Halley, Antarctica (76°, 27°W). Single bulk flow vectors derived from the motion of echo reflection surfaces in the overhead F-region ionosphere are consistent both with plasma flow vectors, poleward of Halley, observed simultaneously by the PACE HF radar and also, for various levels of geomagnetic activity, with published mean plasma flow at the same invariant geomagnetic latitude (62°). The results demonstrate application of the method and lend support to existing evidence that the velocity measured by this kind of technique, at least for moderate to active geomagnetic activity at high latitudes, represents ionospheric plasma flow.  相似文献

From lidar observations of relative atmospheric density above Aberystwyth (52.4°N, 4.1°W) upper stratospheric and mesospheric temperatures have been derived for a total of 93 nights between December 1982 and February 1985. Excellent agreement was found between radiances synthesised from these temperatures and those measured by satellite-borne instruments. Summer temperatures showed a smooth and regular variation with altitude and reasonably good agreement with the CIRA (1972) model atmosphere. By contrast, winter temperatures showed a much greater variability with altitude and greater changes from night to night, with the frequent occurrence of a large amplitude wave-like perturbation in the mesosphere with about 15 km vertical wavelength and amplitude about 20K between 60 and 80 km.Pronounced warmings of the stratosphere were observed during the three winters of observation. During the warming event occurring in early February 1983 the stratopause temperature increased to 303K at 43 km, while the major warming event of late December 1984/early January 1985 produced a stratospheric temperature gradient of 16K km−1 between 34 and 36 km. During the latter event a distinct local temperature minimum at 32.6 km was observed on New Year's Eve, this descending to 29 km by the following night and being accompanied by a lowering of the stratopause from 43 to 38.5 km in the same period. These results demonstrate the ability of the present technique to resolve the high stratopause temperatures and steep stratospheric temperature gradients which occur during stratospheric warmings, in marked contrast to the limited resolution achieved by satellite experiments.  相似文献

Sferics are electromagnetic pulses generated by lightning events. Their maximum spectral energy is in the frequency range below 15 kHz. These powerful natural VLF transmitters can be used to determine the propagation characteristics of the atmospheric wave guide between earth and ionospheric D layer along virtually every propagation path. A VLF-sferics-analyzer was operating at the German Antarctic von Neumayer Station from January to June 1983. This analyzer recorded sferics from distant lightning events in the frequency range between 5 and 9 kHz. The method of measurement is described. The data are evaluated, and the propagation characteristics of the atmospheric wave guide are determined as a function of azimuth and season. The result is compared with theoretical calculations. It is shown that the difference between west-to-east and east-to-west propagation is much smaller than theory predicts, indicating that the ionospheric D layer at high southern latitudes behaves less anisotropic with respect to VLF propagation than at mid-latitudes.  相似文献

Simultaneous daytime observations of E region horizontal irregularity drift velocities in the equatorial electrojet and F region vertical plasma drifts were made on a few magnetically quiet days at the magnetic equatorial station of Trivandrum (dip 0.5°N). Measurements of the electrojet irregularity velocities by VHF backscatter radar and the F region vertical plasma drifts by HF Doppier radar are used to deduce the daytime East-West electric fields in the E and F regions, respectively. The fluctuating components of the electric fields are separated and subjected to power spectral analysis. The E and F region electric field fluctuations are found to be well correlated; the estimated correlation coefficient is in the range of 0.52–0.8. The fluctuation amplitudes are of the order of 15% over the background for the E region and 25% for the F region. The spectral analysis reveals dominant components in the range of 30–90 min with F region components stronger than those of the E region by a factor of about 1.5 on the average. The F region electric fields during daytime being coupled from the low latitude E region, the good correlation observed between the E and F region perturbations suggests that the electric fields in the E region at low and equatorial latitudes are coherent for the temporal scales of the order of few tens of minutes. The spectral characteristics are such that the commonly occurring medium scale gravity waves could possibly be the source for the observed fluctuations in the E and F region electric fields.  相似文献
