In this paper EISCAT observations of the effect of artificial modification on the F-region electron temperature and electron density during several heating experiments at Tromsø are reported. During O-mode heating at full power (ERP = 240 MW) the electron temperature is increased by up to 55% of its ambient value at altitudes close to the heater interaction height. Measurements of the electron density have revealed both enhancements and depletions in the vicinity of the heater reflection height. These differences are indicative of variations in the balance between the transport and chemical effects. These results are compared with a time dependent numerical model developed from the perturbation equations of Vas'kov and Gurevich [(1975) Geomagn. Aeron.15, 51]. The results of numerical modelling of the electron temperature are in good agreement with the EISCAT observations, whereas there is less good agreement with regard to electron density.  相似文献

Powerful, high frequency (HF) radio waves can be used to temporarily modify the ionosphere. These controlled, active experiments have proven useful both for studies of the natural upper atmosphere through observations of ionospheric response to HF induced perturbations, and for basic physics investigations exploiting the ionosphere as a large, natural plasma laboratory-without-walls. This experimental diversity has attracted the attention and participation of physicists from a wide range of disciplines. As a result, HF ionospheric modification research continues to be strongly motivated by its many applications in the fields of aeronomy, space physics, plasma physics, and telecommunications science.  相似文献

High frequency waves incident on an overdense ionosphere (i.e. HF < penetration frequency) are known to produce large-scale irregularities with scale sizes of several hundred meters in the F-region of the ionosphere. Three observations of radio star intensity fluctuations at UHF are reported for HF ionospheric modification experiments performed at the Arecibo Observatory. Two observations at 430 MHz and one observation at 1400 MHz indicate that the thin phase screen theory is a good approximation to the observed power spectra. However, the theory has to be extended to include antenna filtering. Such filtering is important for UHF radio star scintillations since the antenna usually has a narrow beam width. HF power densities of less than 37 μW m−2 incident on the ionosphere produce electron density irregularities larger than 13% of the ambient density (at 260 km) having scale sizes of ~510 m perpendicular to the geomagnetic field. The irregularities form within 20–25 s after the HF power is turned on. From the observed power spectra driftvelocities of the irregularities can be estimated.  相似文献

High power radio waves can modify the ionospheric electron density distribution to produce field aligned plasma irregularities which give rise to the anomalous absorption of HF radio waves. The coefficient of anomalous absorption of a vertically propagated radio wave due to scattering from field aligned irregularities has been calculated, taking into account the effects of the geomagnetic field on electron motions. These results are compared with those of other theoretical models. Furthermore, the scale lengths of field aligned irregularities produced by a high power radio wave during recent high latitude modification experiments have been determined from measurements of the anomalous absorption by means of this theory.  相似文献

The possible generation and suppression of ion-cyclotron waves in a collisional plasma by external high power electromagnetic (EM) waves with frequency close to the local upper-hybrid frequency is considered. It is shown that the ion cyclotron instability can be destabilized (stabilized) for ω0UH0 > ωUH), where ω0 is the pump frequency of the EM wave. The results are applied to naturally occurring ion-cyclotron instabilities in the high latitude ionosphere.  相似文献

In the geometrical optics approximation, a synthesis oblique ionogram of ionospheric and magnetospheric HF radio wave signals propagating between magnetic conjugate points has been carried out. The magnetospheric HF propagation is considered for a model of the waveguide formed by field-aligned irregularities with depleted electron density. The characteristic peculiarities of the magnetospheric mode have been determined: (i) strong disperion of the group delay with a frequency at 14–18 MHz, from − 1.4 to 0.6 ms/MHz for magnetically conjugate points at geomagnetic latitudes φ = 30°, 40° and 50°, respectively, (ii) spreading ∼ 1–2 ms, and (iii) a possibility of propagation between magnetic conjugates points at moderately low geomagnetic latitudes φ0 ∼ 30–40° at frequencies exceeding 1.5 times the maximum usable frequency (MUF) of multi-hop ionospheric propagation.  相似文献

The Hall and Pedersen ionospheric conductivity disturbances produced by high power amplitude-modulated radio waves as a function of altitude for different initial electron density profiles are calculated. Disturbances of the integral Hall and Pedersen conductivities as well as the artificial magnetic pulsation amplitudes for different initial electron density profiles and different magnetic pulsation periods are calculated too. Some recommendations for carrying out heating experiments for artificial magnetic pulsation generation are proposed.  相似文献

The results of numerical modelling of powerful HF radio wave propagation through the ionosphere plasma are presented. Comparison of the heating wave parameters with those of a low powerwave gives the possibility to study the self-action of the powerful HF wave. At low altitudes the ‘translucence’ of the ionosphere plasma takes place. At high altitudes the wave absorption sharply increases. Both self-action effects lead to the reduction of the altitude range of the heated region. The dependence of self-action effects and the resulting electron temperature profiles on the initial electron density profiles are studied.  相似文献

Electron density fluctuations have been measured with a modified retarding potential analyzer during the four ROSE rocket flights. The instrument is described and the results obtained are explained and discussed. They are generally in agreement with similar earlier results, but also show new features.  相似文献

Possible generation of whistler waves by Tromso HF heater is investigated. It is shown that the HF heater wave can parametrically decay into a whistler wave and a Langmuir wave. Since whistler waves may have a broad range of frequency, the simultaneously excited Langmuir waves can have a much broader frequency bandwidth than those excited by the parametric decay instability.  相似文献

A theoretical model is described which predicts electron temperature in the day-time F-region above EISCAT on geomagnetically quiet days, given the observed values of electron concentration, ion temperature and heat conduction, the daily average of solar radiation at 10.7cm and the MSIS-86 model of the neutral atmosphere. The values predicted by the model agree very closely with the observed temperatures, both for average conditions and for individual days. On two occasions the onset of a geomagnetic disturbance after a period of quiet conditions was accompanied by a growing divergence between the predicted and observed values, which corresponds to an additional source of electron heating such as would be provided by low energy particle precipitation.  相似文献

Measurements of the amplitude and phase of VLF radio signals from the Omega transmitters on La Reunion Island and in Argentina have been made on routine Antarctic re-supply nights from Christchurch, New Zealand. It has been found that when the propagation paths to the transmitters cross the Antarctic ice cap, the direct path signals are very rapidly attenuated below the receiver noise level, the dominant signal source then being provided by the radio waves diffracting around the edge of the ice cap. These results have been made possible by the simultaneous use of the phase and amplitude data in a synthetic aperture antenna type analysis.  相似文献

Incoherent scatter measurements inside and outside an ionospheric electron density depletion are described. The density depletion is probably caused by an enhancement of NO+-ions and subsequent dissociative recombination. The NO+-ions are increased because high electric fields present at the geographical location of the density depletion speed up the reaction O+ + N2 → NO+ + N. The electron as well as the ion temperature within the density depletion are strongly enhanced, the latter due to Joule heating, also caused by the electric field.  相似文献

This paper presents further experimental results on ionospheric current modulation, using powerful amplitude modulated HF waves produced by the new heating facility at Ramfjordmoen near Tromsø, Norway. As a result of the current modulation, waves in the ULF, ELF and VLF range can be efficiently generated. The experiments discussed here cover the range from low ELF up to 7 kHz. The observed signal strengths are of the order 1 pT. Decomposition of the received ELF/VLF waves into R- and L-mode shows that both modes are usually of comparable strength. The signal strength as a function of modulation frequency shows pronounced maxima at multiples of approximately 2 kHz. The paper also presents a brief theoretical discussion of the processes involved in the generation of ELF/VLF waves by HF induced current modulation.  相似文献

Millstone Hill incoherent scatter (IS) observations of electron density (Ne, electron temperature (Te) and ion temperature (Ti) are compared with the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI-86) for both noon and midnight, for summer, equinox and winter, at both solar maximum (1979–1980) and solar minimum (1985–1986). The largest difference inNe is found in the topside, where values of Ne given by IRI-86 are generally larger than those obtained from IS measurements, by a factor which increases with increasing height, and which has a mean value near two at 600 km. Apart from the bottom of the profile, which is tied to the CIRA neutral temperature, the IRI-86 Te model has no solar cycle variation. However, the IS measurements during the summer reveal larger Te at solar maximum than at solar minimum. At other seasons higher Te at solar maximum occurs only during the daytime at the greater heights. Nighttime Te is shown by the IS radar to be generally larger in winter than in summer, an effect not included in the IRI. This is apparently due to photoelectron heating during winter from the sunlit ionosphere conjugate to Millstone Hill. The day-night difference in Ti given by IRI-86 above 600km is not as large in the IS measurements.  相似文献

Results are presented on measurements of lower ionosphere parameters (electron concentration, coefficient of ambipolar diffusion, etc.) by the method of resonance scattering of radio waves by periodic artificial irregularities. The method of resonance scattering is based on the generation of periodic irregularities in the ionospheric plasma by powerful radio emission and investigation of the characteristics of the back scattering of diagnostic radio waves by these irregularities.  相似文献

A realistic model for the temperature variation along geomagnetic field lines is described. For high altitudes (>1500 km) the temperature is taken to increase as the nth power of radial distance (n−2), giving temperatures consistent with those measured in situ by high altitude satellites. For realistic temperatures at low altitude an extra term is included. The temperature gradient along the field line is then 0.9–1.6° km−1 during the day and 0.5–0.7° km−1 during the night at 1000 km, reducing to about half these values at 2000 km, for the latitude range 35–50°. This is consistent with calculations made from nearly simultaneous satellite measurements at 1000 and 2500 km. It is shown that assuming diffusive equilibrium, including the new temperature model, more realistic equatorial electron density profiles result than for isothermal field lines. The temperature gradient model is also purposely formulated to be of a form that enables the temperature modified geopotential height to be obtained without numerical integration. This renders the model particularly suitable for ray-tracing calculations. A ray-tracing model is developed and it is shown that unducted ray paths are significantly altered from the corresponding paths in an equivalent isothermal model; there is greater refraction and magnetospheric reflection takes place at lower altitudes. For summer day conditions, an inter-hemispheric unducted ray path becomes possible from 26° latitude that can reach the ground at the conjugate.  相似文献

Ionospheric data from three incoherent scatter stations over the height range 225–450 km were studied for all daylight hours over a wide range of solar conditions. The relationship between electron temperature Te, electron density Nand solar flux at 10.7 cm wavelength S10.7 was expressed as Te = AB·(N−5 × 1011) + C·(S10.7−750), where N is in units of m−3 and S10.7 in kJy.This provided a very satisfactory expression for all data taken at Malvern and St. Santin between 0800 and 1600 LT. For data taken at Arecibo, however, the linearity broke down at low electron densities. The data from all three stations were therefore divided into two sets according to electron density and reexamined.ForN < 5 × 1011 m−3 B increased steadily with height and decreased steadily with latitude. For N > 5 × 1011 m−3 B did not appear to vary with height, with season or with latitude. C was approximately constant for all sets of data. The different mechanisms involved in the heat balance of the electron population are discussed and a qualitative explanation for the relationship is proposed.  相似文献

The reflection of electromagnetic waves by density gradients in a plasma with a magnetic field derived from a scalar potential is studied. Conditions are found for reflection at grazing incidence at a surface S containing field lines. No restriction is placed on the angle between the wave-normal and the field, and account is taken of the curvature of the surface and the anisotropy of the medium. Particular reference is made to whistler-mode waves in the magnetosphere. The minimum electron density enhancement needed for reflection is calculated. Guidance by small-scale irregularities and ‘super whistlers’ (whistlers with upper cut-off above one-half the equatorial electron cyclotron frequency) are briefly discussed.  相似文献
