A 600-km array of five Trimpi receivers (“elements”) has been set up in New Zealand broadside to the VLF (22.3 kHz) transmitter, NWC, some 6000 km west, with element separations varying from 8 km to 550 km. Although such a five-element array is inadequate for imaging of lightning-induced ionisation enhancements (LIEs) by VLF holography, or inverse scattering, estimates of LIE size and location can be made if the shape and form of the LIE can be guessed or assumed, with even fewer elements. With five elements, tests of the assumed model can be made as well.Owing to its transform properties, the simplest model to use for scattering inversion is the Gaussian LIE distribution. For this model, and for single mode propagation, an inversion process is derived here for the full range of LIE and path dimensions, ranging from those for which the receiver is in the diffraction far field to those in which “geometric optics” dominate. This inversion process has some validity for small LIEs of other shapes of simple form. For more extreme models, the dominance of geometry or diffraction can usually be established in individual cases which then allows simple scaling procedures to be used in scattering inversion. Some 70 Trimpi events were observed on all five elements during a single night in July. 1991 (late winter). These were used to determine LIE location and size, and to test the applicability of various LIE models. It was found that most LIEs that night occurred over the Tasman Sea near the great circle from the VLF transmitter, NWC, to Wellington, generally some 500 to 2000 km from Wellington, and with north-south dimensions of 100–250 km. Much longer east-west dimensions (oriented towards NWC) are suggested to account for the very strong Trimpis observed. While about half of these LIEs that night could have had a smooth lateral spread (e.g., Gaussian), the remainder required varying degrees of fine structure, from “flat” or Butterworth LIEs to multiple LIEs as might be expected from multiduct whistlers, to explain the observed diffraction pattern exhibiting maxima and minima as well as the wide angular range over which simultaneous Trimpis were observed.  相似文献

Phase and amplitude perturbations on VLF subionospheric transmissions from transmitter NWC to Dunedin have been studied on both MSK frequencies and at spaced receivers, 9 km apart. In any one event (a ‘Trimpi’) the phase and amplitude perturbation can be expressed in terms of a perturbation phasor. This is generally believed to be the result of lightning-induced electron precipitation (LEP) producing a localized increase in ionization near the normal reflection height for subionospheric (waveguide) VLF waves. Most of the Trimpis received on the NWC-Dunedin path can be best explained if the LEP ionization is sufficiently localized so that it acts as a scattering centre for the subionospheric VLF wave from the transmitter. It is then this scattered wave or echo at the receiver which makes the perturbation phasor. We call these ‘echo Trimpis’. The phase of the echo relative to the direct signal will differ on spaced antennae if the angle of arrival of the two signals differ. Similarly, this relative phase will vary with frequency if the group delay of the signals differ. Thus measurement of these differences allows location of the scattering centres, and so too the LEP. Locations made show a significant grouping in a region where the lightning intensity is high. This and other features strongly suggest that these echo Trimpis originate from local (southern hemisphere) lightning. This and other reasons are suggested to explain the high proportion of echo Trimpis on this path.  相似文献

The vertical electric field component was measured by a group of the Ukrainian Institute of Radio Astronomy on board the Professor Zubov scientific vessel during April 1989 at latitudes from 30°S to 50°N. Results of the amplitude measurements in the Atlantic of natural ELF radio signals and those from the VLF navigation system “Omega” at its lowest frequency of 10.2 kHz are given. Characteristics were obtained of the moving ship as the field-site for the ELF observations. Variations in the ELF radio noise amplitude recorded at tropical latitudes agree with the computed data for the model of three continental centres of lightning activity. The VLF results were obtained by the “beat” technique providing the simplest narrow-band amplitude registration. Range dependencies of the field amplitudes from A (Norway), B (Liberia) and F (Argentina) stations have been analysed. The VLF attenuation factor was estimated for the ambient day conditions along the four cardinal directions. This allowed the detection of a statistically significant attenuation difference between the east-west and west-east propagation paths. The VLF radio signal was also used as a probe to evaluate the effective height of the vertical electric antenna and to calibrate the ELF noise amplitudes.  相似文献

In this paper, a lightning channel is simulated by a vertical wire of finite length and of moderate electric conductivity. At low frequencies, such a wire behaves like a resonant wave guide cavity in which only discrete resonant wave modes can be generated. The theory of resonant waves in a wire of finite diameter is outlined and applied to the return stroke with electric contact to the earth and to intracloud K-strokes without electric contact to the earth. Two types of current wave forms exist: aperiodic waves of the Bruce-Golde type and damped oscillations. The configurations of the electric charge density and the electric current in the wire are presented for the various wave modes as functions of height and time. From the observations of lightning current and of sferic wave forms, it is apparent that the first mode dominates, and that both types of wave forms can be identified. From these wave forms, the channel parameters-length and diameter can be derived. For the higher order modes, the resonance model loses its validity and freely propagating waves are expected during the whole lightning flash. These waves contribute to the observed continuous spectrum. The skin effect becomes important increasing the effective resistance of the wire with frequency. Since these waves interfere destructively, they do not contribute significantly to an effective charge transport.  相似文献

Abstract: Multi‐scalar or multi‐site power relations offer two contrasting ways of understanding the shifting geography of state power. In this paper, we argue for a different starting point, one that favours a topological understanding of state spatiality over more conventional topographical accounts. In contrast to a vertical or horizontal imagery of the geography of state power, what states possess, we suggest, is reach, not height. In doing so, we draw from Sassen (2006 , Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages, Princeton University Press) a vocabulary capable of portraying the renegotiation of powers that has taken place between central government in the UK and one of its key city regions, the South East of England; one that highlights an assemblage of political actors, some public, some private, where negotiations take place between elements of central and local actors “lodged” within the region, not acting “above”, “below” or “alongside” it. The articulation of political demands in such a context has less to do with “jumping scale” or formalizing extensive network connections and more to do with the ability to reach directly into a “centralized” politics where proximity and reach play across one another in particular ways.  相似文献

The complexity of the electric properties of the atmosphere, which influences the excitation and propagation of electromagnetic signals generated by lightning discharges, gives rise to a diversity of the typical signal wave forms and amplitudes in the various space-time domains. This causes difficulties and controversies in the interpretation of the experimental data. In geophysical problems of such a kind, considerations accounting for a broadband spectrum are particularly important. In the present paper, lightning induced ULF-VLF fields in the daytime inhomogeneous atmosphere and D-region of the ionosphere above the thundercloud are analyzed for a standard model of the vertical return stroke. The developed analytical approach makes it possible to unite the canonical model of the electromagnetic radiation into a free-half-space, the discharge (ELF-VLF spectrum) and ‘post-discharge’ (ULF spectrum) low-frequency models and to clarify the temporal scales in the mechanism of lightning coupling with the atmosphere and low ionosphere with respect to the local relaxation time, discharge characteristic time scales and observer location.  相似文献

The so-called thermal “cleaning” applied in thermoluminescence analysis allows distinguishing TL signal originating from different traps of comparable thermal depths. Here, the detailed study on the suitability of a similar approach — which can be called optical “cleaning” — for the analysis of OSL process has been carried out by means of computer modelling. The optical “cleaning” is realized by short optical stimulation applied directly after irradiation. It turns out that this approach does not help to separate signals related to various traps having similar optical cross-section (OCS) values. For some sets of trap parameters, sufficiently good reconstruction of the trap optical cross-sections can be achieved by the analysis of the conventional OSL curve obtained directly after sample irradiation, while the OSL curve analysis after “cleaning” does not provide any additional data. For other cases the analysis of both curves with and without “cleaning” leads to optical cross-section values different from those assumed in the model, but just in such situations the optical “cleaning” can be helpful. The differences between the OSL components of the conventional curve and the one obtained after “cleaning” can be used as indicators of an incompatibility of the trap parameters obtained from the OSL analysis with their actual values.  相似文献

In a resonant wave guide model of lightning currents, two impulse type standing waves can exist: aperiodic waves of the Bruce-Golde form (type 1), and damped oscillations (type 2). The electromagnetic waves generated by these two types of lightning currents are calculated for various distances and compared with observations. It is shown that the measured wave forms of sferics at distances smaller than about 300 km of return strokes (R strokes) as well as of intracloud strokes (K strokes) are generated mainly by type 2 lightning currents. The channel parameters like channel length and channel diameter derived from the observed sferics are 19 km and 4.6 cm, respectively, for the average R stroke, and 4 km and 1.6 cm for typical K strokes. The large values of the lengths probably correspond to the real lengths of oblique and tortuous channels, rather than to their vertical elevation. The finite electric conductivity of the earth modifies the high frequency component of the wave forms. With decreasing conductivity and/or increasing distance, the rise times of the radiation component to its first maximum increases and the maximum amplitude decreases.Typical rise times for R-strokes are about 3 μs consistent with the observations if the electric conductivity of the earth is of the order of 10−3 S/m. The spectral functions of the wave forms are also calculated. The spectral amplitude of the average type 2 R-stroke has its maximum near 4 kHz, and that of the type 2 K-stroke maximizes near 35 kHz. Within the high frequency region at frequencies greater than about 300 kHz. the spectral amplitudes decay proportional to the reciprocal third power of the frequency. The radiation component in the far field contains 7% (16%) of the total electromagnetic energy of type 2 R (K) strokes.  相似文献

The variation of backscatter intensity with slant range for the Wick radar of the SABRE system consistently exhibits a minimum at approximately 800 km. Theoretical modelling of the antenna characteristics indicates that this is due to a null in the vertical polar diagram due to interference from ground reflections (Lloyd's mirror effect). By means of this “null” feature, the vertical velocity distribution within the scattering layer can be examined.A sharp discontinuity often exists in the variation of the Doppler velocity with range across the backscatter minimum. These observations can be accounted for in terms of an increase in the drift velocity of about 200 m s−1 with height across the 10 km range of the scattering layer. These results are consistent with the theoretical predictions of St.-Maurice and Schlegel based on the assumption of a two-stream instability.  相似文献

A simple stick model is presented for the inelastic seismic analysis in 3D of two-way eccentric multistory RC buildings. It has 3 DoFs per floor, point hinges at the ends of the vertical elements connecting floors, elastic story stiffness derived from the corresponding story force-interstory deformation relations of the elastic 3D structure under inverted-triangular floor loading (by torques for torsional stiffness, by horizontal forces for the lateral ones), story yield forces derived from the total resistant shear of the story vertical elements, but no coupling between lateral and torsional inelasticity. It is evaluated on the basis of comparisons of response histories of floor displacements to those from full nonlinear models in 3D of four actual buildings. Alternative locations of the story vertical element with respect to the floor mass center are examined: (a) the floor “center of twist” of the elastic 3D building under inverted-triangular floor torques; (b) the story “effective center of rigidity,” through which application of inverted triangular lateral forces does not induce twisting of floors; (c) the centroid of the secant stiffness of the story vertical members at yielding and (d) the centroid of the lateral force resistance of story vertical elements. Among alternatives (a)–(d), the floor “center of twist” provides the best agreement with floor displacement response-histories from full 3D nonlinear models. This means that the static eccentricity that matters for torsional response may be taken as that of the floor “center of twist.” The center of resistance comes up as the second-best choice.  相似文献

Abstract

This article examines the complex relations between spatial planning and its cultural context (including the specific socio-economic patterns and related cultural norms, values, traditions and attitudes). To be able to analyze the extent to which spatial planning adapts to external pressures such as Europeanization, a “culturized planning model” with the three dimensions “planning artefacts”, “planning environment” and “societal environment” is used. It can be observed that the “harmonization” of spatial planning practices can result from external pressures such as EU regulations as well as (horizontal) collective learning processes. However, “harmonization” does not necessarily result in convergence. Adaptational pressures such as Europeanization often result in the customization of existing structures, frames and policies (“planning artefacts” and “planning environment”) but do not fundamentally change the underlying core cultural traits (“societal environment”). These cultural traits are quite resistant to change and help maintain a diversity of planning cultures and policies in Europe.  相似文献

Ambitions for a European “circular economy” imply waste is becoming an important “commodity frontier”. Increased recycling in Europe has been accompanied by a proliferation of informal waste work. “Southern” geographies of informal recyclers provide resources for interpreting this phenomenon but studies of a commodity frontier in urban waste have tended to focus on moments when informal waste workers are displaced by capital intensive waste management systems. I draw on concepts in world-ecology and materialist ecofeminism to explore the proliferation of informal waste workers in Barcelona and the way their (re)production produces “Metabolic Value”. Informal waste work is shown to emerge and persist as part of a commodity frontier process—where the appropriation of unpaid work from non-commodified spaces is the hallmark of how capitalism secures “Cheap Nature”. The study suggests that, rather than internalising ecological costs, recycling often rests on the appropriation of value from uncommodified spaces.  相似文献

Colombia has one of the largest internal refugee populations in the world. For years government agencies and NGOs presented vastly disparate statistics, with government figures showing much lower estimates of the amount of internally displaced persons, or IDPs. In this article I suggest that the discourse of displacement in Colombia was dominated by a “war over numbers” at the expense of a more complex characterization of the displaced population. Drawing on Hannah Arendt's suggestive ideas on the banality of evil, I propose the notion of the “banality of displacement” to examine two distinct but related processes. First, the normalization of violence over time has made forced displacement appear as a mundane social fact in Colombia. Second, this banality is actively produced through an “attitudinal thoughtlessness” in government and NGO circles. To illustrate this banality at play, I focus on two interrelated aspects. First, I examine the history of IDP management in Colombia, in particular the disputes over displacement statistics. Second, I explore the “colour-blindness” in the counting strategies and the lack of reliable data regarding displaced Afro-Colombians. In a final section I discuss ways in which the banality of displacement has been contested, both from civil society and by the Constitutional Court, which has challenged the Colombian government over its handling of the displacement crisis. I also suggest more broadly how a re-reading of Arendt brings a critical sensibility to other geopolitical contexts, exemplified by geographers' engagement with the “war on terror.”  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Empiricism is a claim about the contents of the mind: its classic slogan is nihil est in intellectu quod non fuerit in sensu, “there is nothing in the mind (intellect, understanding) which is not first in the senses.” As such, it is not a claim about the fundamental nature of the world as material. I focus here on in an instance of what one might term the materialist appropriation of empiricism. One major component in the transition from a purely epistemological claim about the mind and its contents to an ontological claim about the nature of the world is the new focus on brain–mind relations in the eighteenth century. Here I examine a Lockean trajectory as exemplified in Joseph Priestley’s 1777 Disquisitions Relating to Matter and Spirit. However, Locke explicitly ruled out that his inquiry into the logic of ideas amounted to a “physical consideration of the mind.” What does it mean, then, for Priestley to present himself as continuing a Lockean tradition, while presenting mental processes as tightly identified with “an organical structure such as that of the brain” (although he was not making a strict identity claim as we might understand it, post-Smart and Armstrong)? One issue here is that of Priestley’s source of “empirical data” regarding the correlation and indeed identification of mental and cerebral processes. David Hartley’s theory in his 1749 Observations on Man was, as is well known, republished in abridged form by Priestley, but he discards Hartley’s “vibratory neurophysiology” while retaining the associationist framework, although not because he disagreed with the former. Yet Hartley was, at the very least, strongly agnostic about metaphysical issues (and it is difficult to study these authors while bracketing off religious considerations). One could see Locke and Hartley as articulating programs for the study of the mind which were more or less naturalistic (more strongly so in Hartley’s case) while avoiding “materialism” per se; in contrast, Priestley bit the (materialist) bullet. In this paper I examine Priestley’s appropriation and reconstruction of this “micro-tradition,” while emphasizing its problems.  相似文献

Recent studies have indicated that Levallois-style core reduction offered potential practical benefits to hominin populations. However, none of these studies have yet considered one of the most important functional attributes of flake tools, which is edge angle. To address this shortcoming, we statistically examined flakes produced experimentally during “classic” or “lineal” Levallois core production and reduction. The primary aim of our analyses was to statistically test the null hypothesis of “no difference” between the edge angles of “Levallois” products and the flakes involved in their production. We employ existing edge angle analytical techniques and develop new comparative methodologies to assess flake blank standardization through the case of Levallois core reduction. Having determined the statistical properties of our experimental Levallois reductions, we thereafter evaluated to what extent edge angles produced may, or may not, have been useful to prehistoric hominins. Our analyses demonstrated that the experimentally produced Levallois edge angles were indeed statistically different from the flakes involved in their production. These differences were evident both in terms of relatively higher (i.e., more obtuse) edge angles than debitage flakes and in being significantly less variable around their higher mean edge angles compared to debitage flakes. However, based on current knowledge of how flake edge angle properties relate to issues of functionality, such differences would not have been detrimental to their functionality. Indeed, the edge angle properties they possess would have provided distinct benefits to hominins engaged in their manufacture. Most notably, Levallois-style core organization and reduction would have provided hominins with a reliable means of consistently producing flakes (i.e., “Levallois flakes”) possessing average flake angles that are beneficial in terms of providing a viable cutting edge yet not being so acute as to be friable upon application. Hence, edge angle properties join an array of other features that provide logical motive for why hominins may have organized core production and reduction around Levallois-style patterns at various times and places during the Mid-Late Pleistocene.  相似文献

The two books discussed here join a current pushback against the concept (thus also against claims for the historical occurrence) of genocide. Nichanian focuses on the Armenian “Aghed” (“Catastrophe”), inferring from his view of that event's undeniability that “genocide is not a fact” (since all facts are deniable). May's critique assumes that groups don't really—“objectively”—exist, as (by contrast) individuals do; thus, genocide—group murder—also has an “as if” quality so far as concerns the group victimized. On the one hand, then, uniqueness and sacralization; on the other hand, reductionism and diffusion. Alas, the historical and moral claims in “defense” of both genocide and “genocide” survive.  相似文献

We attempt to find the northern hemisphere zonal wavenumber for a striking quasi-2-day wave “event” or “burst” observed near 90 km altitude in the summer of 1992. A unique set of data on the upper atmosphere from nine radar sites is analysed (spacings ∼400– ∼ 12,000 km), and compared with expectations from models. The 2-day wave phase comparison, which finds zonal wavenumber m = 4, is conclusive. Determination of n, which defines the meridional wave amplitude structure, is not attempted, as the sites here have only a small latitude spread (21°N to 55°N). Also the amplitude seems to be unstable showing some sort of modulation which is not simultaneous at all sites. Finally, the radars have not been “calibrated” against each other in terms of wind speed. This calibration would have to be done before small differences in wave amplitude could be believed. A similar event in 1991 for which fewer sites are available is also discussed. Here the choice between m = 3 and 4 is not as clear.  相似文献

Lightning-induced ionisation enhancements (LIEs) are usually produced by short (~ 1 s) bursts of energetic electrons precipitated from the radiation belts in the process of amplifying whistlers. During their short life (~ 30 s) LIEs diffract or otherwise modify stable transmissions of VLF waves propagating in the two-dimensional Earth-ionosphere waveguide. This causes perturbations (‘Trimpis’) on the same time scale in the phase and amplitude of these VLF waves. Unless the LIEs are large (> 100 km) and smoothly varying (e.g., Gaussian distribution of ionisation enhancement) in the horizontal directions, the LIEs need not be on the great circle path (GCP) from VLF transmitter to receiver to produce Trimpis. Large and smooth LIEs produce ‘GCP Trimpis’, while small or structured LIEs produce ‘echo Trimpis’. The two can usually be distinguished, if Trimpi phase and amplitude are monitored and if the Trimpis are observed at several frequencies or on two or more spaced receivers simultaneously. If only GCP Trimpis are considered, the causative LIEs can be located and mapped by geometric optics using a network of receivers of sufficient density (spacing ~ 100 km) and a few transmitters. Provided all Trimpis are identified as GCP, their mere detection is sufficient for location. This is equivalent to locating the LIE ‘shadows’ cast onto arrays of spaced receivers by two or more transmitters. If this GCP identification is not made, or is just assumed, location and mapping (size estimation) errors can be quite large. At VLF (λ ~ 15 km) this geometric optics approach cannot be used to study the horizontal fine structure of LIEs since LIEs producing GCP Trimpis have no fine structure.Small or structured LIEs cast a diffraction pattern onto an array of spaced receivers. If both the phase and amplitude perturbation of echo Trimpis are measured at each receiver of the array, holographic techniques can be used to reconstruct the two-dimensional map or image of the causative LIEs. It is shown that, for a single system of one transmitter and a receiver array, this allows high resolution (~ 10 km) in the azimuthal dimension only. Equally high resolution in both horizontal dimensions can be achieved with two orthogonal systems. This technique works equally well on GCP Trimpis to map the causative LIEs (which are large and structureless) without incurring location errors thereby.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article explores the complex landscape of devotion in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain, comparing the legislated Christian-only history of Counter-Reformation with the various alternative strands of belief, faith, and devotion present in a variety of areas of cultural production. The article first examines representations of devotion—and methodologies of reading such representations—in areas of production such as architecture, dictionaries, literature, and the arts; at the end of this first section, it coins the concept of “After Thought” as a reading tool to better comprehend and possibly experience devotion in ways particular to early modern Spain, not merely en cristiano but in multiconfessional forms. “After Thought,” both the tool and the article, follow intellectual engagements with Andalusi (not merely Andalusian) past, present, and future environments in early modern Spain. They also engage alternative somatic dimensions of a different “entendimiento” of Christianity, as described by Teresa de Jesús and practiced by both her and Cervantes. Finally, in reviewing the six ducal chapters of the second part of Don Quijote as a rewriting of Castillo interior, the apocryphal condition of this segment of the novel mobilizes yet another wheel in the Trojan horse of fiction, one that exposes the way in which Cervantes refigures Teresa de Jesús, thus yielding two interactive models of “After Thought” in early modern Spain's arts, religion, and spirituality.  相似文献

This research theorizes Colombia's 2011 Victims’ and Land Restitution Law (the Victims’ Law) as a biopolitical program that intends to foster the lives of conflict‐affected populations through providing an array of reparation measures. Based on fieldwork with internally displaced landmine victims in Colombia's Magdalena Medio region, I highlight how the Victims’ Law constitutes the identity of which populations count as “victims” worthy of reparations, how such parameters are contested, and how landmine survivors’ sense of themselves as “victims” is mediated via their experiences with the Victims’ Law and the reparation programs it provides. In particular, I highlight the possibilities and limitations of reparation measures that hinge on small‐scale business incubation programs for landmine victims to show how a legally recognized victimhood category presupposes “self‐responsible” neoliberal subjects who must confront contexts of conflict and state neglect.  相似文献
