Chinese Secret Societies and Popular Religions Revisited: An Introduction

It has been over forty years since Jean Chesneaux published his edited volume Popular Movements and Secret Societies in China,and some twenty years since David Ownby and Mary Somers Heidhues published their edited volume Secret Societies Reconsidered.

The author was born in December 1943 in the Qamdo Prefecture and died of illness in 2000. She was a writer and a member of the Tibet Branch of the Chinese Association of Writers. She used to be head of Nagqu Prefecture, Deputy Director of the Nagqu Prefectural Bureau of Animal Husbandry, Vice-Chairman of the Tibet Association of Literary and Art Circles, Chairman of the Tibet Association of Folk Literature Writers, President of the Tibet Society of Folk Culture and Chief Editor of Tibet Folklore. Her works include Changtang Grasslands and I. Here is a story she once wrote.     

My Elder Brother Sakhong Tsering Dorje

Mr. Sakhong Tsering Dorje was born in 1912 in Kanggu Village of Dromo Town of Tibet. About 1951, he made substantial contributions to the peaceful liberation of Tibet and became a well-known patriot. He took the posts of deputy director of the office of Kyika in Dromo, member of the CPPCC of Gyantse County and member of the CPPCC of the Tibet Autonomous Region respectively.

区域对比:环境与聚落的演进

Through the comparative analysis considering environment, archaeological culture sequence, alteration of settlement quantities, relation between the change of environment and the movement of settlements, cultural embedding superposition exponent of ancient sites, ect. among three regions, the author thinks that they respectively represent three different developing patterns of ancient settlements. The middle and lower reaches of Yellow river and the Valley of Xilamulun River respectively represented different development patterns of the two native cultures, namely, the agricultural civilization of Great River and the half-agricultural and half-stockbreeding civilization of northern districts. The Valley of Hulu river, located in the northwest, can be the representation of secondary cultures, which originated from civilizations of great river, but dissimilated during the course of spreading abroad towards west.

山西夏县东阴遗址调查试掘报告

Dongyin site of the Upper Erligang period(early Shang),locates at Dongyin village,about 7.5km south to Xiaxian town. For understanding the content and the nature of this site,especially for rescue purpose,we did a surveying and an excavation of 170m^2 in Feb: 2000. Despite of various potteries and stones,a large of raw bone of the Upper Erligang period were found. These materials are important for our research on the procedure of bone artifact making and the nature of the site. The result of surveying of several time and one excavation of this site are reported in this paper.
