Announcing Swine Flu and the Interpretation of Pandemic Anxiety

This paper discusses the ways in which 2009 novel swine‐origin influenza A (H1N1) was announced and resonated with current pandemic anxieties. In particular, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are used as a lens through which recent pandemic anxieties can be analysed and understood. This entails a closer look at the securitisation of public health and the challenges and struggles this may have caused within public health agencies. In that light, CDC' formal entanglement with global health security and its announcement of the H1N1 pandemic are interpreted, followed by an ethnographically informed focus on various people who were engaged in the H1N1 emergency response and their practices and practical struggles in the face of pandemic anxiety.     

Conservation projects in Pergamon. Building Z and the shelter constructed above it

Abstract

The reconstruction and conservation of buildings in Pergamon has been an important aim of the excavations of the German Archaeological Institute Istanbul over the last twenty years. The paper discusses the structure known as Building Z situated about halfway up the slope to the acropolis of Pergamon on a rise between the terrace of the Sanctuary of Demeter and the precinct of the Temple of Hera. Although the southern fringes of this Hellenistic building were discovered in 1909, digging here was soon abandoned due to the very poor preservation of the walls. In 1990, a trench of the 'City Excavations' revealed the northern part of the building. The well-preserved Roman mosaic pavements and other remains found here — eventually exposing the best preserved examples of interior decoration yet discovered in the ancient city of Pergamon — prompted the construction of a shelter open to visitors. The construction of this shelter began in 1996 and was completed in 2004. The roofed area covers only the northern part of the former ancient building. The modern roof construction, on steel-trussed girders above the walls, has been deliberately designed as an independent unit.

Shadow bands during the total solar eclipse of 11 July 1991

We recorded shadow bands just before and just after the total phase of the solar eclipse of 11 July 1991. The recordings were made using two broad band silicon photodiodes separated horizontally by 100 mm. They faced the zenith, near to where the eclipsed Sun lay as seen from our observing site close to San José del Cabo in Baja California. The irradiance fluctuations associated with the shadow bands were around 0.04 W m⁻² peak to peak on a background of 1–3 W m⁻². The cross-correlation function indicates that the shadow bands were moving at about 1.8 m s⁻¹ perpendicular to their extent. The power spectral density functions are in accord with the shadow band theory of Codona [(1986), Astron. Astrophys. 164, 415–427].     

The partial re-erection of the Temple of Trajan at Pergamon in Turkey: A German Archaeological Institute project

Abstract

The re-erected Temple of Trajan, one of the most prominent monumental structures visible today at Pergamon, is based on the principles of anastylosis. The first task of the team, working under the auspices of the German Archaeological Institute, was the complete documentation of all existing architectural elements. When the preserved fragments yielded sufficient information, these pieces were joined together and restored to their original position in the Trajaneum. If necessary, missing parts of the temple were added using an artificial stone formed from a mixture of crushed marble and white cement, a material that is clearly distinguishable from the original natural stone. This re-erection preserves the integrity of the temple, while simultaneously enabling the visitor to imagine the original splendour of this monumental building.     

Patterns of Temporary Mobility in Australia: Evidence from the 1991 Census

While Census data are generally employed to examine permanent migration, they also provide a unique window on temporary population movements, a phenomenon largely neglected in Australia. Building on the work of Zelinsky, this paper outlines a conceptual framework for analysis of temporary mobility and reviews the strengths and limitations of the Census as a source of information. Data from the 1991 Australian Census are then used to analyse the incidence of temporary movements, the characteristics of temporary movers, and their spatial distribution. It is shown that temporary mobility is selective of certain groups and that there are substantial concentrations of temporary movers in both coastal and inland locations. By combining analysis of their origins with the attributes of their destinations, a preliminary typology of temporary population movement is proposed. The concluding section considers the implications of this form of mobility and identifies some avenues for further research.

Postcodes and the 1991 census of population: issues,problems and prospects

"The decade between the 1981 and 1991 UK Censuses of Population has seen an enormous increase in the use of the postcode system for locational referencing. To date, no direct means have existed for linking postcoded data to census geography at the most detailed level, but the production of a new ED/postcode directory promises to offer a range of new opportunities for postcode applications following the release of the 1991 Census data. This paper reviews the characteristics of the postcode system, describes the new directory, and examines the methods which will be available for linking the Census and postcodes post-1991."
