10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ENTHRONEMENT OF THE 11TH PANCHEN ERDENI

Acelebration ceremony was held on December 8, 2005 in Tashilhungpo Monastery to mark the 10th anniversary of the enthronement of the 11th Panchen Erdeni. Though in deep winter, the monastery was filled with warmth. The Dorgyia Courtyard was freshly adorned with a pagoda composed of fried dough, dried nuts, qingke barley and wheat rising seven meters high. THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF SICHUAN-TIBET AND QINGHAI-TIBET HIGHWAYS

Highway traffic is lifeblood of the social and economic development in Tibet. Due to the historical and geographical factors, Tibet didnot have a formal road or a civil car before 1950. The economic exchanges relied on the backs of porters and horses.     

COMMEMORATION FOR 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 10TH PANCHEN LAMA'S PASS AWAY HELD IN BEIJING,TIBET AND QINGHAI

正On January 28th, a series of religious ceremonies to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the pass away of the 10th Panchen Lama were held respectively in the Guangji Temple,the Xihuang Monastery, and the Yonghegong Lamasery in Beijing, the Jokhang Temple of Lhasa and the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Shigatse in the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Kumbum     

MATHEMATICS,STATISTICS AND ARCHAEOMETRY: THE PAST 50 YEARS OR SO*

This review of developments in the use of mathematics and statistics in archaeometry over the past 50 years is partial, personal and ‘broad‐brush’. The view is expressed that it is in the past 30 years or so that the major developments have taken place. The view is also expressed that, with the exception of methods for analysing radiocarbon dates and increased computational power, mathematical and statistical methods that are currently used, and found to be useful in widespread areas of application such as provenance studies, don't differ fundamentally from what was being done 30 years ago.     

PHOTO EXHIBITION MARKING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE QINGHAI-TIBET RAILWAY OPEN TO TRAFFIC HELD IN BEIJING

正The photo exhibition celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Qinghai-Tibet railway open to traffic was held in Beijing from July 1 st to 16th.Sponsored by China Association for Preservation and Development of Tibetan Culture and China Railway Construction Corporation Limited,the exhibition collected more than 300 photos and painting works,showing the construction achievement of the Qinghai-Tibet railway and the social and economic development it brings to the snowy plateau.     

ARCHAEOMETRY AT SLOWPOKE‐TORONTO

This paper describes the archaeometric research conducted at the SLOWPOKE Reactor Facility of the University of Toronto (SLOWPOKE‐Toronto) during its existence from 1971 to 1998. The contributions to student teaching and research are described, and the total contribution of the facility to studies of an eclectic assortment of ancient and historic materials is addressed.     

THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF CITIES FORMED IN 1775-85 (COMMEMORATING THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GUBERNIYA REFORM)

Based on extensive unpublished research, the author discusses the distribution and economic-geographic situation of the 176 new cities that were incorporated under the territorial-administrative reform of 1775-85. (The translation was prepared by James R. Gibson of York University, Toronto.) [The author, one of the eminent Soviet economic geographers, died in 1986 at the age of 82.]     

100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION CONFERENCE OF THE LHASA MEN-TSEE-KHANG & SECOND ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF TIBETAN MEDICINE COMMITTEE OF WFCMS HELD IN LHASA

正Themed as inheritance,integration,innovation and development,the conference is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Lhasa Men-Tsee-Khang(renamed as Tibetan Medical Hospital of TAR since 1980)and carry forward the Tibetan medicine.The conference received 241 academic theses on the basic theory,clinical diagnosis and treatment of the Tibetan medicine in Tibetan,Han and English.     

A CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO A PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION ON THE THEME OF THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PEACEFUL LIBERATION OF TIBET

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PETROLOGY AND THE ARCHAEOMETRY OF LITHIC MATERIALS*

For 50 years, archaeologists and physical scientists have been dating, determining the composition of and measuring stone tools, and reporting them in Archaeometry and many other journals. In Archaeometry specifically, the number of papers devoted to the analysis of lithic material has increased at least 30 times since 1958 and volume 1. This is a reflection not only of an increase in the number of scholars devoting their time to the archaeometry of stone, but also of increases in the quality and quantity of instrumental technology available to researchers in the field.

This third list of accelerator dates includes material dated in the same period as datelist 2 (Gillespi?et al. 1985) and subsequently. The dates have been achieved by the same methods as described there.     

A GEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE USE OF Pb ISOTOPES IN ARCHAEOMETRY

Lead isotope ratios in ore bodies and magmatic rocks depend in a complex way on several a priori independent parameters, including the geological age of the tectonic province in which the ores and magmas formed and its U/Pb (μ) and Th/U (κ) ratios, two very sensitive parameters characteristic of metal sources. All these parameters are entangled in hard‐to‐read Pb isotopic ratios. With respect to the commonly used fingerprinting techniques, which rely on the comparison of raw isotope ratios, the main motivation for the present work is to provide a method for making geologically and geochemically educated guesses about metal provenance even in the absence of isotopic data on reference ores. It shows how to unscramble a geological model age and μ and κ information from isotopic measurements. This approach brings to light a new organization of the Pb isotope database and an untapped wealth of information that can be used for provenance studies and other archaeometric purposes. We provide expressions with which to calculate these parameters and, using literature data, demonstrate how Pb isotopes in ores and magmas define clear zones in the silver‐rich provinces of the Central Andes. We further show how the geological model age and μ and κ values fingerprint production areas in 16th–18th century silver coins minted in Mexico and South America. Finally, we use Pb isotopes to illustrate how the Reconquista of the Emirate of Granada (1482–91) and the seizure of the Betic silver mines are reflected in the silver coins of the Catholic Monarchs.
