A brief on Hu Shi's academic thinking in chronicle

When writing chronicles for others, Hu Shi formed some systematic thinking of his own in many aspects such as the development and creation of chronicle writing styles, the functions and values of chronicles, and the relations between chronicle and biography. As a matter of fact, his thinking in chronicles has greatly influenced the development of chronicle writing forms. Hu Shi made it clear that the evolution and development of an owner's academic experiences should be revealed in his chronicle, in which his academic status and contribution ought to be concluded. However, as he pointed out that chronicles should not be only some simple records of the owners' achievements but also critics and assessments in which their academic faults also need to be stated out. He regarded chronicle, in general, as a particular type of biography. Meanwhile, he also noted their differences in contents, styles, functions, etc.
