On the Early Cliff Tombs in Sichuan and Relevant Issues

The earliest cliff tombs emerged around the end of the Western Han to the early Eastern Han Dynasties;to date,eight of cliff tombs of this period have been found and confirmed,six of which not modified and reused in the later times could be classified into two types by the shapes of the plans,namely the rectangular single-chamber cliff tombs and square or transverse rectangular single-chamber cliff tombs.These early cliff tombs were distributed in the valleys of Fujiang River,Tuojiang River,Minjiang River and Yangtze River.The re-classification and re-zoning of the cliff tombs in Sichuan based on the types and distributions of the early cliff tombs revealed that all of the cliff tomb types of the later periods were evolved from that of the early cliff tombs as the prototypes;the assemblages of the types in these zones were different from each other and the proportions of each type took in these zones were also sharply different.
