Archaeological Ceramics and the Physical Sciences: Problem Definition and Results
Abstract:Abstract

Ancient pottery has been measured and analyzed for over a century. Its virtual indestructibility makes it an attractive material to study. After the experimental stages of application of some of the newer analytical approaches from the physical sciences, however, problems should be better defined before extensive studies begin. Collaboration between the archaeologist and the physical scientist should develop knowledge of the basic raw materials available to the potters at the stage of technological development within the culture whose ceramic products are being studied. The likelihood that the results will offer clues that help us better understand parts of the culture that produce the pottery are thus increased and justify the research work.
