Successful Technique for Dating of Lime Mortar by Carbon-14

Abstract

Lime mortar can be dated successfully by the following important modificationsin technique: 1) crushing and sieving to remove inert aggregate; 2) acidization of live mortar and taking only the first fraction of gas evolved, that fraction which has least contamination; 3) correction of results by σC₁₃ and dendrochronology. We have applied this technique to buildings in Stobi with generally successful results.
