Western Missionaries in China and the Reform of the Imperial Examination System in Modern China

The western missionaries paid much attention to the imperial examination system after they arrived in China. Their investigation of the system exposed its internal abuse and made it more necessary to reform the system. Their suggestion indicated the direction of the reform in the imperial examination system. The propaganda of western missionaries accelerated the liberation of sense of Chinese people and promoted the process of examination reform. However, their influence on the reform were limited because they are not the leading actor of reform after all.
